COURSE DESCRIPTION This course will provide you with a better understanding of the Catholic Churchs role in making truth, charity, justice, and freedom present in our society. Rooted on the Catholic Churchs social doctrine, it will provide you with an avenue t owards the development of a Christian conviction in the pursuit of social transformation starting from yourself and eventually in the society as a whole.

Appreciate the importance of social involvement as an integral aspect of being a Christian. Show concern for the well-being of the person and of the whole creation. FINAL PRODUCT

For your final product, you have a choice between a research paper or a video documentation that tackles a current social issue. Your work must exhibit your familiarity and deep understanding of the issue and the Catholic Church s teaching vis-a-vis the issue that you have chosen. You must also give your opinion on how a student like you can promote Christian values and be an instrument of social transformation.

ELGA-based rubric for the final output: A. Patriotic Category Choice of topic (Social issue).

Advanced (4 points) Topic deals with a current and pressing social issue. Multiple techniques are used to artfully and successfully promote social involvement

Intermediate (3 points) Topic deals with a current and important social issue. There are efforts to promote social involvement

Elementary (2 points) Topic deals with an important socia issue.

Beginner (1 point) Topic deals with a social issue.

COURSE POLICIES A. Prompt and regular attendance is required. If you arrived late, you are expected to submit a piece of paper (1/8) indicating your name, signature, date and the time you entered the classroom. This is to ensure that you will be marked late instead of absent. B. You are responsible in the monitoring of the number of your absences. C. Assignments/seatworks/projects must be submitted on or before the due date. D. Always be prepared with a blue or black inked pen and a clean sheet of paper (yellow pad) of different sizes. E. Special exams will be given only within the week after the missed scheduled exam. For this purpose, you must secure and present a permit/receipt of payment for special exam from the Accounting Office. F. You are expected to behave properly inside the classroom by paying attention to the discussions and activities and by showing respect to your teacher, classmates, and visitors (if there are). G. You should not leave the classroom without first asking permission from the teacher. For valid reasons, you may be allowed to leave the room only for 5 minutes. H. You must observe the class seat plan at all times, otherwise, you may be considered absent. I. You are not allowed to use any electronic device (i.e. cellular phone, tablet, laptop, etc.) during class hours. J. You are required to secure a copy of the textbook and handouts for classroom discussions and activities. N.B. All other policies (attendance, tardiness, decorum, grievance, etc) shall be subject to the provisions of the latest version of the Student Handbook.
