Introduction
Vienna has a lot to offer its visitors! The sheer number of art, culture and leisure activities available in this city often makes it difficult to work out which ones are the best. Considerations like, What are the best places to go for good food and drink at affordable prices?, Which sights are a must see?, or Whats the hottest club in the city right now? often cant be answered without a certain amount of insider knowledge, making it hard not to get caught in the classic tourist traps. This brochure, however, will help you avoid these places. This brochure is no classic travel guide, but has been deliberately put together for people who are also interested in city life off the beaten track. Of course, traditional tourist destinations have not been entirely left out of this guide, but it also provides alternatives: places the Viennese love to go to spend their free time. Also, what was important to us was to make sure you get good value for money in these places. The final decision about what to see and what to leave out in Vienna is up to you. In any case, we hope you have fun and enjoy your stay!

Sightseeing
All of the large cities in the world are divided into different districts. Vienna has 23 of them, with the first district located right in the centre and the other districts fanning out from it. The individual districts have names such as Innere Stadt (1st district) or Leopoldstadt (2nd district). However, in most cases they are designated by their numbers and not by their names. Each municipal district has its special character and atmosphere. So-called no go areas, which can be found in many cities, do not exist in Vienna! Sights in the first district Vienna is quite rightly considered as a large open-air museum. Numerous sights are conveniently located right in the city centre, i.e. in the first municipal district, which is the oldest part of the city.

A ride on the 1A bus line not only allows you to explore Viennas
first district for little money, but also gives you the chance to gain a good impression of its residents.

Sightseeing

Ringstrasse From 1857 onwards, a spaciously laid out street was built around the historical city centre featuring prestigious public buildings, private palaces, squares and parks, monuments and elegant cafs. Here you can admire some of the most splendid buildings in Vienna, such as the State Opera, the Museum of Art History, the Museum of Natural History, the Parliament building or Viennas City Hall. A stroll through Viennas largest open-air museum is an absolute must for all visitors to Vienna interested in historical architecture. Fearless cyclists should definitely go for a ride on the Ring cycle path which circles around the whole city centre.

Around Christmas, the square in front of Viennas City Hall houses

the citys largest Christmas market! In July and August, it is the venue of an open-air film festival featuring opera performances, ballet, world music and jazz. Free entry!

Tram line 1 takes you comfortably along a major part of Ringstrasse, from Schwedenplatz to Krntner Ring. All you need is a standard Wiener Linien ticket. The more expensive alternative is a ride on the Vienna Ring Tram, which was designed especially for tourists. Ticket prices are rather steep: a ride around Ringstrasse (approx. 30 minutes) will cost you 7,-!

page 11

If you want to relax after an exhausting sightseeing tour, the historical parks along Ringstrasse, such as Burggarten, Volksgarten or Stadtpark, could be just the places you are looking for. If you prefer a classier environment, go for a quick coffee or refreshment to the Palm House in Burggarten. The cafs higher prices are more than made up for by its attractive location in an old greenhouse and its fabulous outdoor area. Krntner Strae If Paris has its Champs Elyses and Berlin has its Kurfrstendamm, Vienna has its Krntner Strasse. In addition to a large number of luxury shops, it features beautiful historical buildings and a lot of street cafs. Great for window shopping and leisurely strolls! Stephansplatz (St. Stephens Square) Right in the middle of the city centre, this large square is a meeting place for tourists from all over the world. During the summer months, it also serves as a stage to numerous street artists. Just enjoy the bustling atmosphere or visit St. Stephens Cathedral, one of Viennas landmarks. However, if peace and quiet is what youre after, youd better visit one of the many churches in the vicinity.

Another oasis of peace and quiet can be found in the cobblestone

lanes to the east of St. Stephens Cathedral. This is the oldest part of Vienna. The most attractive area, leading along Blutgasse, Domgasse and Grnangergasse, is situated right behind St. Stephens Cathedral.

Sightseeing

Imperial Palace www.hofburg-wien.at, Tel. 01/533 75 70 Up to 1918, the Imperial Palace was the centre of the huge Habsburg Empire. Today, the Palace is one of Viennas classic tourist attractions. With its Sisi Museum, the Imperial Treasury and the Spanish Riding School it really embodies all of the typical stereotypes of Vienna. If you are interested in art, the Albertina is a must (see page 33). While the interior of the Imperial Palace is buzzing with tourists, Heldenplatz square in front of the Palace during the warm season is a bustling meeting place of young people who use the square for outdoor entertainment such as football, music, juggling and dancing.

As the tickets for the Imperial Apartments are rather expensive,

we recommend those of you who also plan to visit the apartments of Schnbrunn Palace just to visit one of the two places. At both palaces, the apartments style and furniture date from the same period (Baroque).

page 13

Sights outside Viennas first district Belvedere Palace www.belvedere.at, Tel. 01/79 557-0 Belvedere Palace, a magnificent Baroque palace located in Viennas third municipal district, was the former summer residence of Austrias famous military leader and art lover, Prince Eugene. It is renowned for its splendid view, which is the reason why it was named Belvedere (= beautiful view). Free entry to the palace gardens! Belvedere Palace houses one of the major art collections in Austria, including the worlds largest collection of paintings by Gustav Klimt. For more detailed information see page 34.

If you want to relax after taking in all the art and culture in the
museum, simply stroll through the 8-hectar Botanic Gardens right next to the palace grounds. The entry into the Gardens is free! Karlsplatz The spacious square in front of the Baroque Karlskirche (St. Charles Church) is a special highlight of the city. With its white stone slabs and large fountain it radiates the flair of historical Italian squares, particularly during the summer months. In the run-up to Christmas, it houses a charming Christmas Arts and Craft Market. The Art Nouveau pavilion built by Otto Wagner, which today accommodates a caf turned into a club in the evenings (see page 64), is located a few metres further towards the road. Karlsplatz also houses the Wien Museum (see page 40) with interesting exhibitions on topics relating to Vienna.

Sightseeing

MQ MuseumsQuartier www.mqw.at, Tel. 0820/600 600 Viennas spectacular arts centre near the Imperial Palace boasts not only prominent museums and galleries (more detailed information is provided from page 33 onwards), but also a bustling caf and restaurant scene. If you want to enjoy good food at the MQ, try the Kantine or Glacis Beisl. For more detailed information see page 53. From May to August, the MQ offers a comprehensive cultural programme entitled Summer at MuseumsQuartier, featuring art, culture, theatre, music, dance, performances and literature. Other attractions include the popular boules tracks and sunny restaurant terraces with trendy music. In the pre-Christmas season, the MuseumsQuartier stages its Winter at MQ programme, providing an alternative to conventional Christmas-market kitsch.

Its numerous outdoor seating facilities make the MQ attractive also

for visitors on smaller budgets. In this way, you can happily watch the busy world of creative minds and artsy people while eating whatever snack you have brought with you. Schnbrunn Palace www.schoenbrunn.at, Tel. 01/811 13-0 Schnbrunn Palace, the former summer residence of Austrias Imperial Family, is one of the most beautiful Baroque palaces in Europe. While a ticket for admission to the imperial apartments costs at least 10,50, a stroll through the lavish gardens is free. One of the highlights of such a stroll is the Gloriette, which is located on a small hill and offers a superb view of Vienna.

page 15

Other attractions (you have to pay for) include the Great Palm House, the Desert House, the Maze & Labyrinth and (for animal lovers) Schnbrunn Zoo (www.zoovienna.at). During the Christmas season, the palace provides the setting for a festive Christmas market.

It is also possible to enjoy Schnbrunn Palace without spending

any money. If you cannot or do not want to pay the admission fees, simply go for a leisurely stroll through the magnificent park and soak up the beauty and splendour of the place. Volksprater/Wurschtelprater www.prater.at This amusement park has everything, from carnival games and ghost trains to roller coasters. In addition, long-established traditional restaurants, such as the Schweizerhaus (see page 58), add to its typical Viennese charm. The Prater also houses another landmark of the city: the more than 110-year-old and 64.75-metre-high Ferris wheel. At its highest point, it offers its passengers (unless they are terrified of heights) a brilliant view of Vienna. Tickets cost 9,-. The Wurschtelprater amusement park is located right in the middle of a large recreational area (see page 27).

While a ride on one of the Praters attractions costs between 2,-

and 5,- , admission to the amusement park is free!

Off the beaten tracks

Vienna has a lot more to offer than its traditional tourist hotspots. If you leave the well-trodden tourist paths, you will discover many new and interesting facets of the city. Anyone interested in getting to know the true character of a city will often find it reflected in exactly these areas. Old AKH (General Hospital) University Campus http://campus.univie.ac.at The grounds of todays university campus in Viennas 9th district known as the Old AKH originally belonged to what used to be the Vienna General Hospital. Today, the campus accommodates parts of the University of Viennas faculties of Arts and Social Sciences. And since university students dont just pursue their studies but also love to party, a lively caf and restaurant scene has emerged in this area. In summer, this pleasant oasis of green right in the heart of the city is the ideal place to relax or have a picnic.

A more remote part of the campus houses the seemingly forgotten

Fools Tower, which was built in 1748. It was the first specialist facility for the mentally ill in Europe. Today it accommodates the Federal Museum of Pathology and Anatomy. With its strict geometric shape and lack of any adornment it belongs to Viennas less-known architectural treasures.

Off the beaten tracks

Freihausviertel www.einkaufsstrassen.at/freihausviertel (German) The Freihausviertel is an area located in the 4th municipal district surrounding Schleifmhlgasse and the neighbouring streets between Wiedner Hauptstrasse, Naschmarkt and Karlsplatz. In the past ten years, the Freihausviertel has become a flourishing part of Vienna, providing a home to the citys contemporary art scene. Galleries, fashion designers, a unique flower shop, antique shops and a colourful mix of bars, cafs and restaurants (see page 61) have turned the area into a lively and vibrating neighbourhood! Its close proximity to the Naschmarkt also contributed to the areas upswing. The area was named after the so-called Freihaus, the oldest social housing complex in Vienna, which used to be situated there.

The Point of Sale, a great place for breakfast, is situated in the

Freihausviertel (for more detailed information see page 59). Karmeliterviertel The Karmeliterviertel in Viennas 2nd municipal district has also experienced a boom in the past few years, resulting in a thriving gastronomic and cultural scene. Due to its many old buildings and typical narrow lanes the area has a very special urban charm. Moreover, the Karmeliterviertel was and still is the centre of Viennas Jewish Community. The heart of the area is the Karmelitermarkt, where you cannot only buy loads of foodstuff, but will also find great places for food and drink (see Schne Perle on page 58).

page 19

Augarten http://kultur.park.augarten.org (German) A special highlight on the edge of the Karmeliterviertel is the Baroque Augarten park, which houses not only Viennas Augarten Porcelain Manufactory, but also the residences of the Vienna Boys Choir. Another prominent feature of Augarten Park is its two 50-metre-high Flak towers, serving as monumental reminders of World War 2.

During the summer months, the park is a popular meeting place of

Viennas young alternative scene. There is also a whole load of cultural activities taking place in a casual, laid back atmosphere. More detailed information on the individual events is available on the website! Neubau Viennas 7th municipal district (called Neubau) has become the citys creative and boho district. Here you can find not only the centre of Viennas cultural scene, the MuseumsQuartier (see pages 14, 36) but also a large number of second-hand shops and hip fashion stores on Neubaugasse and its side streets. In terms of culinary delights, the district also has plenty on offer (see Food and Drink from page 53 onwards). And it is the location of Viennas longest shopping street, Mariahilfer Strasse, which, unlike Neubaugasse, mostly features large chain stores. The Spittelberg area, also part of the district of Neubau, is a charming area with cobblestone lanes and Biedermeier buildings. Previously, this part of the city was a red-light district, but today it is dominated by arts and craft shops and bars. Around Christmas, the Spittelberg tempts with what is probably the most magical Christmas market in Vienna.

Off the beaten tracks

Markets Naschmarkt www.wienernaschmarkt.eu (German) Although Naschmarkt today is an attraction rather than a market, you can buy anything there, from fruit, vegetables, bakery products, fish and meat to international products from different countries. Nowadays, the numerous gourmet temples increasingly outnumber traditional market stalls, so that, due to its wealth of trendy eateries, Naschmarkt has developed into a hip hotspot of the city. If you want to experience the Naschmarkt as it used to be, grab a bite at Zur eisernen Zeit, a typical Viennese restaurant full of atmosphere and Naschmarkt nostalgia!

A must-see event at Naschmarkt is the flea market held every

Saturday from 6:30 a.m.-6:00 p.m. Virtually everything is on sale here! But be careful: All that glitters is not gold! If you dont watch out, you may be easily cheated out of your money. Brunnenmarkt Somewhat less mainstream and less trendy, the multi-culti market in Viennas district of Ottakring (16th municipal district) is a good alternative to the increasingly commercial and stylish Naschmarkt. Its mix of artists and Turkish and Greek stall holders lend the market its unique character. If you want to venture into one of the rougher parts of Vienna, we recommend a visit to Brunnenmarkt. Also worth a visit: Viennas legendary Turkish restaurant Kent or Restaurant World (for further information see page 56 onwards).

Every year in mid-May, the area around Brunnenmarkt houses the

Soho in Ottakring arts and culture festival (www.sohoinottakring.at).

page 21

Cemeteries in Vienna Viennas special relationship with death resonates throughout the city. A splendid funeral attended by a large number of mourners is a genuine tradition in Vienna. Zentralfriedhof (Central Cemetery) www.friedhoefewien.at In addition to its numerous honorary graves (Ludwig van Beethoven, Johann Strauss, Franz Schubert and many more), the cemetery features the Dr.-Karl-Lueger Memorial Church (Dr.-Karl-Lueger-Gedchtniskirche), a beautiful Art Nouveau church. The cemetery is located outside the city centre, but can be conveniently reached by tram lines 6 and 71. Cemetery of the Nameless http://vienna.unlike.net/locations/301561-Friedhof-der-Namenlosen The Cemetery of the Nameless at the port of Albern, where the unknown bodies washed up by the Danube were laid to rest, is a romantic wilderness of old graves, flowers and trees. The cemeterys last burial took place in 1940. Since it is so remote, you wont stumble across it, but have to head for it. Cross the dam and you will be alone with the nameless. The best way to approach the cemetery is to take tram line 71 and get off at Hauffgasse. Then take the 76 bus to Alberner Hafen.

The nearby Gasthaus zum Friedhof der Namenlosen and its

substantial Viennese cuisine help you to return to the living world.

Getting out into nature

If you need some time-out from sightseeing, museums and nightlife, Vienna offers plenty of opportunities to recharge your batteries. Hiking Information is available at: www.wien.gv.at/english/leisure/hiking or www.wien.info/en/sightseeing/green-vienna Lainzer Tiergarten (Lainz Nature Reserve) For decades, this former hunting ground of Austrias imperial family has been a popular recreational area. At Lainz Nature Reserve animals run around freely, making it very likely that you will see wild boars and other animals that live in the wood. There are several entrances to the nature reserve. The entrance that can be reached most easily is Nikolaitor. Take the U4 underground line and get off at Htteldorf (terminus); from there its a 10-minute walk to the nature reserve. Another option is to enter the reserve through Lainzer Tor. Take the U4 to Hietzing, change to tram line 60 and get off at Hermesstrasse, then take the B60 bus to Lainzer Tor. The nature reserve is open daily during the warm season. From the beginning of November to mid-February visitors can only access the park surrounding Hermesvilla.

Vienna Woods www.wien.info/en/sightseeing/excursions/vienna-woods The Vienna Woods are crisscrossed by a network of well-marked walking and hiking trails making it an ideal recreational area that can be easily accessed by Viennas public transport.

A scenic hiking trail, City Hiking Trail 1, leads from the end of tram
line D (Beethovengang) through Viennas vineyards to Kahlenberg and back. On the way you can visit one of the famous Heurigen wine taverns (see page 59). The walk takes approx. 3.5 to 4 hours. Detailed information on the hiking trails is provided at www.wien.gv.at/english/leisure/hiking/index.htm The hills of the Vienna Woods include Viennas local mountains, Leopoldsberg and Kahlenberg, which offer a splendid view over the city, the vineyards and the Vienna Woods. Kahlenberg and Leopoldsberg can be conveniently reached by taking the 38A bus from Heiligenstadt (end of U4 line).

Climbing Kahlenberg can make you work up quite a sweat during

summer. Cool off by taking a dip in the nearby Krapfenwaldbad pool (see page 29).

Go green and sporty Old Danube www.alte-donau.info/olddanube.htm Within easy reach of Viennas city centre (U1 to Alte Donau), the Old Danube is a recreational area much loved by Viennas citizens. Rowing, electric, pedal and sailing boats, which are all available for hire, glide gently through the water. When temperatures get too high, the public riverside bathing pools provide welcome relief from the heat. The legendary Gnsehufl bathing pool (see page 28) is especially worth visiting. Numerous cafs and restaurants on the banks of the Danube, many of which can be directly accessed from the water, provide the perfect setting for waterside relaxation. Angeliwiese is a free swimming spot with some facilities (public toilet, drinking water) located between Birnersteig and Romaplatz. Nearby you find the riverside restaurant Birner with its rustic suburban charm and authentic Viennese cooking. To get there, take the underground line U6 and get off at Neue Donau.

The Old Danube is an idyllic place away from the hustle and bustle
of big-city life and is the perfect spot for romantic souls. Its delightful atmosphere is best enjoyed in the evening hours. If you dont believe it, go and see for yourself!

Donauinsel (Danube Island) www.wien.gv.at/english/leisure/recreation/donauinsel.htm The Donauinsel recreational area is perfect for a whole range of activities: sunbathing, walking, running, rollerblading, cycling, swimming, windsurfing, rowing or just enjoying the sun take your pick! If you want to make a splash for free outside Viennas swimming pools, this is the right place for you. A cycling path which is several kilometers long provides perfect conditions for cyclists, runners and rollerbladers. A lively bar and restaurant scene offers evening and nighttime entertainment, particularly during the summer months. Donauinsel also scores top marks with its convenient location: the U1 (get off at Donauinsel) or U6 (get off at Neue Donau) underground lines take you there directly in next to no time.

The absolute highlight of Donauinsel entertainment is the

Donauinsel festival (www.donauinselfest.at), which takes place every year during a weekend in June and attracts up to three million visitors. The programme ranges from alternative rock and pop hits from the charts to cheesy commercial music and cabaret, all performed on more than 20 stages on the island. Admission is free!

Prater www.wien.gv.at/english/environment/parks/prater.html With its large meadows, woods and lakes, the Prater is a popular recreational area right in the heart of Vienna. While runners and cyclists take over the 4.5 kilometre Prater-Hauptallee (the main boulevard through the Prater), the grassy areas off the Hauptallee are ideal for all kinds of ball sports. The Prater can be reached by taking the U1 underground line (get off at Praterstern) and walking the remaining distance or by tram line 1 (get off at Prater-Hauptallee). When you get off the tram, youll already find yourself surrounded by green.

Rent a bike or a cycle rickshaw at the roller coaster in the Volksprater

amusement park (see page 15) and explore the area cycling along the 4.5 kilometre Prater-Hauptallee. Reward yourself for the effort afterwards by enjoying one of the delicious specialities served at Lusthaus, an idyllic Viennese restaurant at the end of Hauptallee.

Like other large cities in Europe, Vienna offers you plenty of opportunities to sample cuisines from every corner of the world. Yet despite this internationalisation, many establishments in Austria and particularly in Vienna serve typical Austrian cuisine. Nightlife
Whilst Viennas nightlife was something of a non-starter during the 80s, the early 90s saw a small but first-rate clubbing scene develop. This was driven mostly by the success of Viennas electronic scene (for example Kruder and Dorfmeister), which still dominates in many clubs. Here are some pointers to the most important clubs in the city! Adriawien 1., Donaukanal, Tel. 0660/312 47 03, www.adriawien.at Even though its not advisable to take a swim near this beach bar, this relaxed beach spot with its summerly atmosphere, cocktail bar and chill out music right in the city is predestined to brighten ones mood. Arena 3., Baumgasse 80, Tel. 01/798 85 95, www.arena.co.at (German) After its bloody decades as an abattoir, the time had come to make something out of the Arena. Originally taken over by squatters, the Arena then became a semi-autonomous cultural center and since then has become THE cult location for punk, rock, hardcore, alternative, indie, ska, electronic and pretty much any music guaranteed to put you in the mood to party!

Nightlife

B72 8., Hernalser Grtelbogen 72, Tel. 01/409 21 28, www.b72.at (German) The young side of the U6 arches! Indie, alternative, hip-hop and more in the club where you can be sure that an underground train will thunder over your head and it wont even hurt! Badeschiff 1., Donaukanal between Schwedenbrcke and Urania Tel. 0660/158 67 18, www.badeschiff.at (German) Viennas new navy! Or, better put, the amazing transformation of a discarded barge from the Danube into one of the hippest locations in the city. The water of the Danube flowing past the Badeschiff looks somewhat uninviting when compared to the swimming pool on the top deck. The bottom deck, in what used to be the barges hold, rocks to electro, techno and indie beats. Caf Carina 8., Josefstdter Strasse 84, Tel. 0699/818 346 58 www.cafe-carina.at (German) What usually happens when a train station restaurant (in this case an old tube station pub) gets taken over? Absolutely nothing! Right? This case, however, is different. With live acts youve never heard of taking to the stage every day, free entry, sometimes with voluntary donations after the gig, a really mixed crowd in the audience, the whole thing is a bit crazybut not without its charm!

Caf Leopold 7., Museumsplatz 1, Tel. 01/523 67 32, www.cafe-leopold.at (German) Well, arent we looking smart today?! The caf is a hit with tourists during the day, with its top location in hot spot Museumsquartier, and is the meeting place for the citys marketing crowd, but transforms itself in the evening: the volume gets pumped up, the beats start to drop and house, techno and the like take over. The only common theme is the Well, arent we looking smart today?!Style meets beats in MuQua. Caf Willendorf 6., Linke Wienzeile 102, Tel. 01/587 17 89 www.cafe-willendorf.at (German) The queen of Viennas gay and lesbian scene is Caf Willendorf. Chelsea 8., Lerchenfelder Grtel/Grtelbogen 29-31, Tel. 01/407 93 09, www.chelsea.co.at The veteran of the clubs on Viennas Grtel! Before it had even occurred to anyone that the space beneath the loud underground line would be ideal for noisier events, one music and football maniac had already set up camp here and delivered the starting shot to legends live longer. The music ranges from intimate indie concerts to 80s party (Fridays), alternative and dancehall reggae and you can still watch all the important footie matches on the widescreen.

In the distant past, Flex was part of the roughest underground scene but today it has earned its place in the alternative mainstream. The old underground line tunnels on the Danube canal are a top location. FlucWanne 2., Praterstern 5, www.fluc.at (German) What do the poor old pedestrians do now? The underpass which was intended for them was walled up, a door built into it and the cult Fluc, which previously resided in several containers above the underpass, suddenly had a location for concerts and massive parties with electro, bass, electronic new years firecrackers and avant-garde sounds. Visually, Fluc sticks religiously to steel and concrete and what the pedestrians do? Wellno idea, but theres been nothing in the papers about any bloodbaths in the streets yet!
