The RED Junior Freeski Team is designed to provide a high quality training program for 7-12 yr olds with a core focus on
introduction and base level training for freeski competition. Training will also include building fundamental technical
skills and tactics, snow safety and etiquette, introduction to park and freestyle skiing, progressive terrain management

Kaslo Trailblazers Society is pleased to report that all
permits have now been received and we are ready to start
construction of the second pedestrian bridge across the
Kaslo River by 5th Street. Tis was stage fve of our goal to
enhance the popular river trail to complete the loop and
avoid a busy summer highway crossing.
Weather permitting, we will work on the concrete abut-
ments during the winter so that the actual bridge arch-
es can be set in place spring of 2014. We will be at the

(Or Medieval Holiday Sword Training In Kaslo)
Kaslos Medieval Longsword Group is hosting a sem-
inar during the Christmas holidays, with instructor Ro-
land Cooper, of Vancouvers Academie Duello. Focusing
on traditional longsword skills required by knights, the
students will advance through the basics of stance and
defensive guards to advanced techniques and sparring
counter measures. Protective equipment and swords will
be available, provided you preregister before December

Kaslo native Roland Cooper is a lead instructor in the
Adult Swordplay Program at Academie Duello. While
focusing on traditional European swordplay, Academie
Duello also rounds out their classes with archery, mount-
ed combat, and wrestling (both in and out of plate ar-
mour). Te Academie is a leader in the growing world-
wide interest in historical European martial arts (HEMA).
Te practice of HEMA has become a worldwide phe-
nomenon over the past decade
with historians and martial arts
instructors working together to
reconstruct the Armizare: 12th,
13th, and 14th century manu-
scripts of the knightly arts of
combat. While many manu-
scripts have been well docu-
mented over the past century, it
is only in the past few decades
that there has been a serious re-
vival of this nearly lost art form.
Cooper has been fascinated
about all things medieval since his
early days growing up in Kaslo.
One of his strongest infuences
is Fiore dei Liberi, one of the
greatest teachers and writers of
Armizare. Fiore was a successful
Italian mercenary and diplomat
before becoming a fght instruct-
or to wealthy upper class knights.
He wrote the go-to standard of
medieval combat called Fior di
Battaglia: Te Flower of Battle.
What Fiore has given us is a
complete system, says Cooper.
It combines unarmed combat
with a wide array of weapons in
a unifed strategic approach. Te
techniques are applicable both in
and out of full plate armour, as
well as both on foot and from
horseback.
According to Kendrick Lawless,
a member of Kaslos longsword
group, Tere is a fundamental
connection we have with a sword.
Every child who picks up a stick
imagines it to be a sword. In our
group we take that inner child
and give her a historical context.

Tis year, the 27th Annual Lightup takes place Saturday,
December 7. Te bonfre at the top of Front Street starts at
4 pm, and afer the parade, the Kuimba choir will gather
around the fre and sing carols.
Shop for one-of-a-kind gifs at the Kaslo Christmas Craf
Faire, at the Legion hall from 10 am until 4 pm. Te chil-
drens scavenger hunt will be going on all day long at par-
ticipating vendors. Prizes will be awarded in the evening
between 5 and 7 pm. Te Front Street parade will start at 6
pm, afer which Santa will head indoors to his workshop at
the Kaslo Hotel. Children are invited to visit with Santa and
get some goodies (parents, bring your camera!)
Vendors on the street will profer hot drinks and yummy
treats to warm you up. Once again, Kaslo Minor Hockey
will be at Lightup selling hot dogs and cocoa in front of the
Front Street Market to raise funds for their activities.
Restaurants around town will be rocking with live music
and the stores will be open late for Christmas shopping.

food hampers is essential, reports holiday hamper co-
ordinator Marya Skrypiczajko.
According to Phillip Jackson, Nelson Food Cupboard
Society board director, Tere are various reasons why
some people dont have enough food. Unemployment,
under-employment, and illness are ofen factors. No one
wants to be in the position of lining up in a church base-
ment to get the essentials for survival, but it can truly hap-
pen to anyone. I believe that in our society of plenty, there
is no reason why anyone should go hungry at any time of
the year.
Te holiday hamper program is an extension of the Nel-
son Food Cupboards year round work providing people
in need with healthy food, some of it purchased from local
organic farmers. Providing fresh, healthy, locally sourced
food is a key component of our work, reports Charles-
worth, We know all about the connection between a
healthy diet and good physical and mental health so we
strive to serve our clientele the best food possible.
Te community can help in so many ways at this time
of the year fnancial donations go toward the hampers,
food donations stock the shelves for January, and people
interested in putting a hamper together themselves can be
matched with an anonymous family.
If you would like to contribute, please send donations
to the Nelson Food Cupboard at 602 Silica Street, Nelson,
V1L 4N1 or donate online through their website, www.
foodcupboard.org. Charity receipts will be issued.

NKL Christmas Hampers
Giving of any kindtaking action begins the process
of change, and moves us to remember that we are part of
much greater universe. Mbali Creazzo
Hunger is an ongoing issue in Canada and rural com-
munities, like north Kootenay Lake, are ofen the most
vulnerable. Food Banks Canada states each month, close
to 850,000 Canadians are assisted by food banks, and
36.4% of those helped are children and youth.
Te NKL Food Cupboard is 90% dependent on com-
munity donations, sales through the Bulk Buying Club
and volunteer labour. In Kaslo and north Kootenay Lake
(population base of around 2,200 residents) the food cup-
board has well over a 100 visits a month, thus we rely heav-
ily on our community and volunteers to run this program.
To help us continue this program we are working with
Front Street Market on a project that would allow their
customers to donate directly at the cash registers. Look
for the poster next to the cash register for how you can
participate year round.
As well, Cornucopia will be ofering a featured weekly
product that, should you purchase, they will match with a
donation to the Food Hampers.
Te Christmas Hampers are coordinated and provid-
ed by the North Kootenay Lake Food Cupboard, with
support from the Nelson Salvation Army, RDCK, Lake-
side Learning Centre, Front Street Market, Cornucopia,
Sunnyside and many other businesses, groups and in-
dividuals. All of these entities come together to create
bountiful and very special Christmas hampers for local
residents in need. Hamper applications are available at the
Kaslo Food Hub, North Kootenay Lake Community Ser-
vices Society and Strong Start locations at JV Humphries
and Jewett Schools. Due date for applications is December
10, by 1 pm at the Kaslo Food Hub (home of the NKL
Food Cupboard located in the basement of St. Andrews
Heritage Hall, door access is in the alley next to Barren
Fly and Tackle.)
To donate to the Christmas Hampers, you can fnd our
festive donation boxes with a list of suggested gifs at a
variety of local businesses.
Tere are several events and avenues for fnancial dona-
tions to the NKL Food Cupboard. Every year, the students
at Lakeside Learning Centre sit at Front Street Market col-
lecting on our behalf. Tis year, the NKL Food Cupboard
is a recognized Food Bank through Food Banks BC, thus
we will be recipients of donations through the Annual
CBC Food Banks Day on December 6 you can specify
you would like your donation to go to the North Koote-
nay Lake Food Cupboard. Our amazing board members
of North Kootenay Lake Community Services will be at
the Christmas Craf Faire where you can purchase a gif
card as a donation. On December 13, the Langham is
hosting an event Christmas Remembered with music,
sing-along carols, munchies, and memoir readings, and
all proceeds will go to the Kaslo Food Hub.
As well, you can pop by the Kaslo Food Hub of NKL
Community Services any time to make a donation. For
