The wood grain paper was an excellent
choice for the background on Lynns page, as
it providing a neutral base that allowed the
remaining elements and photos to stand out and
take notice. Lynn also left a white halo around
each of her three photos so that when layered
together, they did not blend into one another.

cards (and a great way to use up leftover scraps).

Embroidery is just one of many popular crafts that have crossed over into
scrapbooking. Summers hand-stitched title was the perfect technique to use on this
layout about her daughters penmanship. Heres a tip Summer discovered as she was
creating her title: After you have pierced all of your stitching holes, turn the piece
over and sand down all of the holes. This will help your stitches lay smooth and at.
1 Print your title on a plain piece of
paper using your favourite font.
Temporarily adhere the title to your
layout.
2 Using a paper piercer or push pin,
punch holes approximately 1/8
apart around each letter.

and fold in half to create the card.
Trace an arc on the front of the card
and cut to create the door-shaped
card.
3 Cut a strip of tan cardstock 1x12.
Score at 1, 2, 5 and 8 from
the left edge. On the inside of the

penny slider card
With two pennies, a few pop dots and a bit of creativity, you
can add instant motion to a greeting card (or even a scrapbook
page!). Kimbers google-eyed spider moves up and down, as if
suspended by a silk thread, and heres how she created it:
1 Create a 4x5 white card. Cut two
pieces of blue paper 3x4. Adhere
one piece to the front of the card
along the right and bottom edges.
Cut a x3 channel on the second
blue piece of paper 1/2 from the right
and bottom edge with a craft knife.
2 With foam adhesive, adhere to the
front of the card, directly over the rst
piece of blue paper.
3 Create the spider embellishment
by stamping a spider on white
cardstock. Cut out and adhere to a
circle punched from orange paper.
Embellish with google eyes. Create

resist rub-ons
There are many ways to create a resist pattern, from embossing powders to Vickis
decoupage tutorial on page 28, but have you ever tried a rub-on and a bit of acrylic
paint? This combination is a quick, hassle-free way to create a negative pattern
anywhere on your page! While making the tags for her layout, Kimber discovered that
a light touch with the paint achieves the best results, and the type of eraser you use
is essential to removing the rub-on after the paint dries.
1 Adhere a desired rub-on to your
project (in the example, the rub-on
has been added to a kraft tag).
2 Apply a light coat of acrylic paint
over the rub-on and allow it to dry
completely.

layered cork paperclip
When it comes to layering and stacking die cuts, the possibilities are endless, but add
a paperclip and a layer of cork, and youve got a really great embellishment! Sheri put
her paper punches and dies through their paces to create the decorative clip on her
layout. A tip from Sheri when making your paperclip: The dab of adhesive on the back
of the brad is essential so that the assembled die cuts do not slide down the paperclip.
1 You will need a punched decal
circle, paperclip, large brad, and star
already cut from cork.
2 Layer the cork star accent on top of
the decal circle and punch or pierce
a small hole into the center of both.

3 Insert a brad into the hole and
position at top of paperclip. Open
prongs and apply a dab of adhesive
on back to hold rmly in place.
4 This technique works well with other
shapes such as hearts and owers.

There are so many different brands of spray inks and paints to choose from
and they come in a rainbow of colours! Each one has its own special
qualities, including sparkling, chalk and matte nishes. Some are opaque or
translucent, while others offer a hint of colour. Here are a few ways I like to
use these fun sprays.
Bottled spray inks and paints are all the rage and are one of the quickest
ways to add colour to many different types of surfaces. Vicki has some
fantastic tricks and tips for using this versatile product.
To stamp with spray ink, pump
several times onto a non-porous
surface (like a craft mat), then
press a stamp into the ink and
stamp the image onto your project.
This technique works best with
bold stamp images.

can vividly remember my rst day of kindergartendressed in a corduroy dress and knee
socks, holding a new lunchboxand my dad taking photos of me to commemorate the
day. Every fall thereafter (for the next 12 years!) he took First Day of School photos of
me and my brother. Wanting to continue that tradition with my own children, Ive snapped
similar photos every autumn. I love documenting the changes in my children each year,
and back to school layouts are some of my favourite pages to create!

For my easy layout, I created a simple base for my photos by layering 12-inch strips of
patterned paper across the middle of the kraft cardstock. I chose patterns that not only
reected a school theme (numbers, graph paper, and grids), but also complemented the
coloursh in my photos (greens, yellows and corals). To keep things interesting, I added a
few textural layers to the patterned paper stripscardstock border stickers, brads, and
a paper-punched edge. The block of journaling was printed directly on my cardstock
background and topped off with a chipboard and letter sticker title.

For my expert layout, I incorporated one
of my favourite techniquesmisting
over a mask. I created a starburst mask
by cutting that shape from a piece of
cardstock with my die cut machine.
I then held it over the background
cardstock and misted with charcoal
ink to form the ve large circles across
the page. To sharpen the edges of the
starbursts, I traced over them with a
black pen. I then lled each starburst
with a circle of patterned paper, topping
them off with die cuts, stickers, borders,
buttons and brads in similar colors. A few
strips of journaling completed this page.

For my detailed layout, I used a grid of
circles to serve as the framework for
my page design. I cut ten 2 circles
from various patterned papers and
spaced them equally in the center of my
page. I treated each circle as a mini-
canvas, adorning each with a variety
of embellishments, including punches,
stickers, brads, buttons and stitching. The
school theme is repeated in several of
the circles with ABCs, the Periodic Table,
numbers, and graph paper patterns.
I also used some of the circles to add
small details about my layoutthe title,
the date, and the intials of my children.

Capture your best authentic, candid photo with these great tips from our
shutterbug friend, Kathy.
Lets begin with the rule of thirds. This one is easy and you
probably hear it mentioned frequentlysimply divide your photo
visually into thirds. Your subject or focal point should be posi-
tioned along one of the thirds lines, either a horizontal or verti-
cal one, or better yet, any point where the two lines meet. Our
natural instinct is usually to center everything we shoot, so think
about this one as you compose or crop your shots.

o you ever look at a picture and think,
Ok, its good technically, but
somethings missing? If so, it could be
that the composition of your photo is somehow a
little off.
As with any artistic endeavour, there are
suggested guidelines for photography
composition. Which guidelines you use and
when you decide to follow them is a personal
choice. However, there is no question that good
composition can complete an already strong
photograph.
The next time youre behind the lens, give a
quick thought to some of these basic
composition guidelines and see if you can
incorporate them into your photos.
SCT the 3Ts
Lines: Here are a few rules of thumb
for lines. The horizon line should be
straight, diagonal lines are considered
to be dynamic, horizontal lines restful
and leading lines intriguing.
Texture: Texture tends to add visual
interest to a photograph. It can be part
of the subject (clothing, hair, etc.) or
part of the background or foreground
(walls, grass, foliage).
Framing: Naturally occurring fram-
ing is everywherethink doorways,
branches and people. Sometimes its
just a matter of chang-
ing the angle of your
shot. Take a moment to
look around.
Filling the frame with your sub-
ject can create a very compelling
photo, often telling the story in just
one shot.

Alternatively, step back. As
beautiful as a photo can be when
it lls the entire shot, sometimes
stepping back and capturing the
vastness of a setting can tell the
story as well as a detail shot.
Background: Some-
times a photo calls for
a simple background.
You may not always
have the time or
luxury of setting
up a backdrop, but
shooting with a shallow depth of eld
(small aperture number) will help blur the background and
focus on the subject.
Perspective: Move around! Where you shoot your subject
from can make the difference between an average photo and an
interesting photo. By simply changing where you shoot from,
you can often achieve unexpected results.
Body Parts: Try not to cut anyone off at the ankles or the
wrists! Crop more closely to the face and shoulders, or leave
body parts in the photo, if at all possible.
Pattern and Symmetry: Symmetry and order are pleasing
to the mind, and often in their simplicity can create a very ap-
pealing photo.
The composition of your photo should compliment the
subject, not detract from it. Think of it as a supporting
playerits there in the background, and although neces-
sary, shouldnt be the star attraction. As you become more
familiar with what you are looking for, good composition
will become part of your usual technique and your photos
will show it.

hat would we do without our friends? We laugh
with them, cry with them, share our best kept
secrets with them. They are our mates, our buds,
our pals, our partners in crime. We call them dude, chicka,
homie, dawg, girlfriend. They are sisters, brothers, cousins,
and favourite aunts and uncles. Some are loyal companions
that walk on four legs and some may have been imaginary
playmates when we were young. There are those friends
who come into our lives for a season while others hang out
for a lifetime, but no matter how long they stay, they touch
our lives in ways worth remembering. We encourage you to
make space in your album for a page about your best friend

Because the colours in her photos did not go well with
the patterned papers she chose for her page, Sarah
converted all of her photos on this double page layout to
black and white. Problem solved!
furry friends
Sarahs daughter, Ema and their family dog,
Sorella are inseparable. On this layout dedicated
to their friendship, Sarah included Emas hand
print and Sorellas paw print across the bottom of the
page. Heres how:
Sarah traced Emas hand onto a piece of smooth
cardboard and cut it out.
She placed it on a sticky mat (one that is used
with an electric die cutting machine) to hold the
hand print in place, then covered it with her base
cardstock and sanded over it, revealing the hand
print.
For the paw print, Sarah used a non-toxic, washable
ink pad and stamped Sorellas paw print onto
cardboard and cut it out.
She repeated the same steps as she did with the
hand print for this very cool and clever technique.

close cousins
Davinie created this darling altered
frame to celebrate her daughter,
Morgans friendship with her cousin,
Raegan, who she calls her bestie. After
creating the hills, sky and clouds on
the background of the frame, Davinie
positioned eye hole screws on the left
and right inside edges of the frame,
where she suspended a thin wire. From
that wire, she hung embellished banners
and photos of Morgan and Raegan from
tiny clothespins. She also propped an
adorable pink bird above their photos
for some added whimsy. The wonderful
thing about a frame like this, says
Davinie, is that you can swap out the
photos whenever youd like.

With the glass removed from the
frame, Davinie had a bit of extra
depth to work with inside the
frame. She layered the green hills
on the bottom of the frame by
adhering the top most layer with
foam adhesive (pop dots).

Stephanie found a journaling font
that matched the stamp font she
used for her repeated subtitle,
adding a cohesive element to her
well-designed page.

There is probably no greater bond in friendship than that of
a sister and brother and, despite a ve-year age difference,
it is true of Stephanies two children, Caitlyn and Ryan. To
emphasize the theme of her page, Stephanie incorporated various phrase
stamps into her layout. She stamped a repeated subtitle below her die cut
title at the top, which partially rests on two offset half circles. She also
created a thin, custom border to dress up the bottom of her journaling
block, which is interrupted to the right by another stamped sentiment
and a die cut buttery. Both of these stamping techniques are subdued
yet add another design element to the layout without overwhelming the
photos.

There are just some things you
never outgrow, as Becky humorously
confesses on this page about herself and her best
friend, Stephanie. To create the two-tone faux
frame on her page, she trimmed a 10 square
of scrap paper and temporarily placed it in the
center of the yellow background paper. Becky
then sprayed white ink around all four sides and
removed the scrap paper after it dried. Double
rows of handstitching, placed slightly askew,
nishes off this quirky, fun page.
childhood friends
Childhood friendships with cousins
can often be as strong a bond as that
of a sister. Sheris daughter, Shailyn and her cousin,
Leah, share that kind of bond and it is captured so
sweetly on this beautiful, delicate page. Sheris die
cut, fall leaves swirl with depth and dimension thanks
to a shiny coat of glossy accents, and each is crowned
with a small dimensional ower sticker.

photographs at an event. I recently
attended a little league baseball game
and amassed a collection of more than
200 action photos in one afternoon! Now
granted, not every single photo was worthy
of scrapbooking, hence the beauty of the
delete button. But before you get trigger
happy and trash the blurred, partial-head-
cut-off, out-of-focus photos in the batch,
consider using them on a multi-photo
page. They may be less-than-perfect, but
they still have a story to tell!

Summers sketch
Summers dilemma was a case of quantity
versus quality, but with a block format like
this sketch, she was able to squeeze in
eleven smaller photos from her daughters
Halloween party. They add interest to the
page and fortify her hilarious focal photo
and journaling.

Megans largest photo of her adorable
daughter takes center stage on this very
pretty, all-girl layout, while three smaller
photos line up as the supporting cast across
the bottom. Those less-than-perfect photos,
which Megan may not have otherwise
scrapped, were a perfect choice to
reinforce the theme of her page.
Megan tamed the vibrant retro papers
she chose for this layout by using a
neutral sheet of kraft cardstock for
her base page.

happy thanksgiving
1. Emboss card front with Woodgrain
Impression Plate.
2. Trim rustic cream cardstock to 5"x3.75",
rounding two corners on one side.
3. Stamp leaves off the edge of cream
cardstock using colourful inks as shown.
4. Stamp greeting using brown ink. Use Stamp-
A-Ma-J ig (or other stamp aligning tool) for
perfect placement of the stamped title.
5. Die cut jar pieces from white cardstock
and stamp the jar, llers and jar top with
Memento Tuxedo Black ink. Stamp jar fabric
with yellow ink and set aside.
6. Colour the jar llers and jar top with Copic
markers.
7. Assemble jar pieces and wrap rustic twine
around piece. Secure to card with foam
adhesive.
8. Die cut label from tan cardstock and secure
to right side of card with vintage brads.
i have missed you
1. Stamp a 4"x5.25" piece of white cardstock
with background stamp inked with
Versamark. Heat emboss with white
embossing powder.
2. Spritz background with mists, wipe off excess
with baby wipe. Let dry completely and
adhere to card base.
3. Trim a 1.75"x5.5" strip of tan cardstock and
stamp greeting as shown. Spritz with white
mist ink and let dry.
4. Punch two borders from gray cardstock and
adhere behind tan strip.
5. Die cut butteries and spritz with mists. Let
dry completely.
6. Adhere smaller buttery on top of larger one
and secure to card strip with a button sewn
in place.
7. Adhere buttery greeting strip to card.

1. Stamp critters, leaves and tree log on white
cardstock with Memento Tuxedo Black ink.
Colour in critters with Copic markers and
cut out.
2. Die cut label from yellow cardstock. Use
background stamp to add tone-on-tone
texture. Ink edges with distress inks.
3. Assemble cut out, stamped and coloured
images on die cut label. Glue in place and
add google eyes.
4. Stamp greeting below images using
Versamark ink. Heat emboss with white
embossing powder.
5. Trim orange cardstock to 3.75"x5" and stamp
with background stamp using orange ink for
subtle texture.
6. Trim white cardstock to 4"x5.25" and adhere
to card base. Adhere orange stamped mat
to card base.
7. Adhere label to the card with foam
adhesive.

1. Trim rustic cream cardstock to 5.5"x4".
2. Colour in oral stamps using Memento
markers, "huff" on the ink to re-moisten and
stamp on rustic cream cardstock.
3. Stamp over oral background with text
background inked with distress ink. Distress
the right side with edge distresser. Adhere to
card base.
4. Trim a thin strip of brown cardstock and
adhere under the distressed edge as shown.
5. Trim vellum to 1.25"x4". Stamp greeting.
6. Layer ribbon under oral stamped piece,
leaving long ends.
7. Secure vellum to card by overlapping ribbon
and stapling in place.
8. Add button adorned with string and jewels
to nish card.
gobble gobble
1. Stamp card base with doily stamps using
metallic and white inks. Layer doilies for a
more interesting background.
2. Die cut doily from rustic cream cardstock.
Punch 2.75" circle from plaid patterned
paper and adhere to center of doily.
3. Die cut turkey from brown and tan felt. Die
cut turkey feathers using a leaf die from
cream, orange, red, green and yellow felt.
4. Assemble turkey and adhere to doily.
Machine stitch feathers in place. Add
google eyes and heart button.
5. Die cut banners from orange and green
cardstock.
6. Stamp greeting on banners using brown ink.
7. Add "stitching" lines to banners with a white
pen.

happenings of your everyday life? Your days are lled with ordinary routinesat home, on
the go, and all places in between. Imagine the fascination future generations will experience
as they read your scrapbooks years from now and see what your everyday life was like. Be sure
to give those experiences a home in your albums.

The experiences that make up a day in
your life can run the gamut from ordinary
and predictable, to something unexpect-
ed, to a day that is over-the-top exciting. It
would be all but impossible to scrap every
memory, not to mention the extra room
you would need to add to your home just
to house the albums!
To help you decide what to scrapbook
about your everyday life, start by choosing
a random week and think about what
happened in those seven days that really
stood out for you. What memory made its
mark on your heart? What instantly
brought a smile to your face? What
happened that you never want to forget?
Sarah did just that and realized that she
spends an amazing amount of time as a
short-order cook, preparing snacks for her
young (and very hungry) son, Alden.
Armed with adorable photos and humor-
ous, heartfelt journaling, Sarah created this
well-designed layout, making sure she
included the adorable way her son asks

Part of commemorating your everyday
life is to capture the not-so-ordinary times
because, as we all know, life doesn't
always go as scripted. Maybe your son
broke his arm last summer when he
decided he could y like Superman from
the backyard maple tree. Or perhaps
your daughter thought it would be really
cool to give the bathroom door an
extreme makeover and the handiest
paint happened to be your Red Rapture
nail polish.
Davinie took a very innovative route and
created a double page layout about her
daughter at age seven and a half. What
makes this page so great is that many of
the attributes describing Morgan will
change again by the time she turns eight,
and Davinie will have this well-document-
ed "half" page to remember her daughter
at seven and a half.
Remember, every photo has a story and I
encourage you to tell it.

is made with a specic purpose in mind. This issues project is no exception and will
undoubtedly be treasured for years to come.

recently watched a mixed media arts video on Christy Tomlinsons blog and fell in
love with the featured technique. In fact, I was so inspired by her video that I decided
to make an altered piece of my own! When I started designing the tree, I knew that
my Epiphany Crafts Shape Studio bubblecaps would be perfect to build up the leaves,
adding loads of dimension to my project. I love working in mixed media and especially love
all the things I can create with my Epiphany Crafts Shape Studio and Button Studio.
