UM:Okay, whenever you're ready.
NLOkay. This is NICK LEONARD, I am a representative of the S-A-C for
UNITED AIRLINES. I'm reading a letter that includes transcripts from
TODD BEAMER's conversation with the C-S Supervisor at G-T-E AIR
PHONE. Um, the cover letter, uh, actually, uh, the letter urn, sorry, the
letter consists of three pages. Uh, there's a cover letter, there's a page with
contact information for the Supervisor in Customer Service, and then the
third page is the uh page containing the transcripts. I'll read the cover
letter first.
September fourteenth, two thousand one, U-A-L Flight Ninety-three
Incident Information. The attached information includes text recollection
of Miss LISA JEFFERSON. Supervisor, Customer Service, G-T-E AIR
PHONE concerning a call that was routed to the Care Center from U-A-L
Aircraft Ninety-three. This information in it's raw form may be disturbing
and should be handled carefully. G-T-E AIR PHONE is deferring to
UNITED AIRLINES expert knowledge in this area to decide how and
when this information should be passed on to Mister BEAMER's family. In
the brief time LISA spoke to Mister BEAMER he made a request that she
contact his wife directly and tell her that he, TODD, loves her. Miss
JEFFERSON would prefer to speak to the UNITED AIRLINES Support
Representative directly regarding the details of this very personal

conversation. Contact information for Miss JEFFERSON is provided.
So the second page has her information. I'll skip down to the uh actual
transcripts.
This page is dated September eleven, two thousand one. Eight forty-five
a.m. Call came into station number fifteen. PHYLLIS received the initial
call. When PHYLLIS realized that it was a real hijacking situation, I took
over the call. I spoke to TODD BEAMER from Cranbury, New Jersey,
flight number ninety-three, seven five seven UNITED from Newark, New
Jersey, leaving at eight a.m. to San Francisco, arriving at eleven fourteen
a.m. San Francisco time. TODD told me that there were three people,
nationality unknown, on the flight hijacking the plane. Two with knives,
and one with a bomb strapped around his waist with a red belt. The plane
consisted of twenty-seven passengers on the front (telephone ringing in
background) and ten in the back, with five flight attendants. I asked him if
there were any children on the plane. TODD responded, not that he could
see. From what TODD could see two people were hurt, not sure if they
were dead or alive. The hijackers went into the cockpit and locked the
door. They were flying the plane and turned the plane around. He thought
they might have been flying north. Some of the passengers on the plane
had decided to jump on the hijacker with the bomb and try to get him
down. The last thing TODD said to me was to call his wife for him and to

pray for him. At this point TODD started reciting the Lord's Prayer. Then
someone said lefs roll. The call was still connected but there was nothing
but silence. The call ended at nine a.m. That's trie end of the letter.
UM:Great. You can appreciate it.
NLAbsolutely.
UM:And uh I can't imagine how you do this job.
NL:Well, sometime's I can't either (chuckle).
T.JM:(Chuckle). Well it's calls like this that we uh, that are very refreshing and
we, we appreciate it.
NLI'm glad I could uh...
UM:We all kind of knew that that was TODD, so we're glad to get uh, uh, ya
know...
NL:Yeah.
UM:. . .confirmation and that he would have taken action, so.
NLTODD sounds like a great guy.
UM:Oh he was the best friend you could ask for. NICK thank you very much
for your help.
NLThank you.
UM:And we'll talk to ya.
NLTake care.
UMrBye bye.

(THE FOLLOWING IS A TRANSCRIPT OF A CALL BETWEEN LISA
BEAMER AND LISA JEFFERSON. AT TIMES DURING THE CALL
LISA BEAMER BECOMES EMOTIONAL AND IS DIFFICULT TO
UNDERSTAND).
U:Hello.
LB:LISA?
U:Yes.
LB:This is, this is LISA BEAMER calling.
U:0h, this is LISA BEAMER?
LB:Yes. I understand you spoke to my husband.
U:Yes, I did.
LB:I got a, a summary of the call which you had um written up I guess for
your, for G-T-E.
U.-Yes.
LB:And they said that I could contact you.
U:Yes. Urn, did you want...
LB:ljust wanted to tell you one thing, is it okay if I record this call?

LB:Okay.
U:Okay. I was just gonna say that was pretty quick that they got the
information to you.
LB:Yeah they got it to me late last night.
U:Okay because I had given them the information urn, yesterday actually to
contact you. Because we had just wanted to wait a little while to contact
you til we thought, ya know, the time was right to call you.
LB:Right.
U:And uh, I spoke to him, I was the last person to speak with him actually. I
spoke to him to the end of his flight, which was Tuesday. He called about
uh eight forty-five central standard time.
LB:Uhhuh.
U:And we're located in Oakbrook (PH), Illinois.
LB:Right.
U:And uh, he told me that uh there was three guys taking over the plane.
Two had knives and one had a bomb wrapped around his waist with red
belt. And...
LB:Was he, what kind of an emotional state was he in?
U:He was, he was calm...
LB:He was calm.
U:He was very calm.

LB:He was very calm.
U:You wouldn't of thought it was a real call.
LB:You wouldn't of thought it was a real call.
U:No, because he was urn, he wasnt nervous at all. He was speaking in a
normal tone of voice, he never got upset, not one time.
LB:He never got upset, not one time.
U:Not one time. And uh he told me that they had everybody sit down and
one flight attendant was sitting next to him.
LB:They asked everyone to sit down on the flight?
U:Yes.
LROkay.
U:And...
LB:Do you know where he was sitting at all?
U:ln the back.
LB:He was sitting in the back.
U:Yes. He was sitting in the back of the plane. I dont know the seat number
he had, but we know he was in the back of the plane.
LB:Okay.
U:And um, he told me that uh they had locked two, the guys with the knives
had went into the cockpit, taken the pilot and the co-pilot out and locked
the door.

LB:They did not kill the pilot and the co-pilot?
U:He knows that they were injured but he didn't know if they were dead or
alive.
LB:Okay.
LBrOkay so those were the two that were injured.
U:Yes.
LB:Okay.
U:Urn, they had drawn the curtain, after they had done that, to first class and
he couldn't see what was going on.
LB:Were there other passengers in first class do you know?
U:Yes, he told me there were ten people in the front of the plane.
LB:Okay.
U:Twenty-seven in the back.
LB:Okay.
U:And five flight attendants. And he had gotten this information from the
flight attendant that was sitting next to him.
LB:Okay.
U:And uh, he told me that, he asked me what did they want, is it ransom that
they want or what, and urn, I told him we really don't know at this point...
LB:Did he know that there were other bombings going on?
U:No he didn't.

LB:Okay.
U:And I didn't want to let him know that...
LBrRight.
U:.. .at that time, either. And that's why I told him I don't know exactly what
they wanted and um, the F-B-I and all the authorities have been contacted,
and I was trying to get as much information from him as I could, and he
told me to say the Lord's Prayer with him.
LB:He wanted you to say the Lord's Prayer with him?
U:And he did.
LB:And you guys completed it?
U:Yes. Top to bottom
LB:Okay.
U:He said uh urn, he just said oh God help me, Jesus could you please help
me.
LB:He asked Jesus to help him?
U:Yes he did. And uh, and he said he was just, ya know, he just know uh he
probably wont make it though this...
LB:He knew he probably wasn't gonna make it through it.
U:And he asked me if I would make him a promise and relay you a message.
And uh he gave me his phone number. He told me that he has two boys
named DAVID and ANDREW (PH)...

LB:He told her about the boys, DAVID and ANDREW.
U:And he told me that you were expecting.
LB:Yes. January.
U:When is the baby due?
LB:ln January.
U:Oh. And urn he just knew me by Mrs. JEFFERSON when I took the call
over, I had taken the call from another representative. She told me that
this was a real hijacking. So by being that I told her to give me the phone
and I asked him his name. He said TODD BEAMERfrom Cranbury, New
Jersey.
LB:Right.
U:l remember all this information by heart.
LB:(Sigh).
U:And uh, he was talking about his sons. How old is DAVID and
ANDREW?
LB:DAVID is three and a half and ANDREW is one and a half.
U:Oh. And from his voice, I could just tell I'd say he seems to be no more
than thirty-five, I would say in his early thirties.
LB:Yeah, he;'s thirty-two.
U:l noticed that over the Internet when they ran the names.
LB:Yeah.

U:He's from, he works for ORACLE (PH)?

U:Yeah and uh actually G-T-E AIR PHONE have uh corporate programs
with different corporations.
LB:Uh huh, that's right.
U:ORACLE was one of the programs.
LB:That's right. Uh huh.
U:And I uh found that he has used the service several times.
LB:Yes he has.
U:So he's very familiar with it.
LB:Uhhuh.
UrAnd he told me to just make him a promise that I will relay a message to
you. So then he said um, after he gave me the phone number, he said and
LISA, and I said yes, and urn, he said that's my wife's name, and I said oh
thafs my name too.
LB:Uhhuh.
U:So, uh, I said I will urn, I will give her the message and he wanted me to
tell you that he loved you very much, and the boys, and uh, we talked just
like we had been knowing each for quite a good time...

while I was talking to him. I probably, I thought it was about forty
minutes, but they told me actually one like ten minutes...
LB:Yeah.
LhFifteen minutes.
LB:Yeah.
U:That I actually spoke to him. But the conversation that we had in that little
time, ya know, he not once got upset at all. He told me that they were
about to jump the guy, thafs the term that he had used...
LB:He said they were about to jump the guy?
U:Yes. Which, I found out later that, I know we had another phone call from
a guy named JEREMY...
LB:Uhnuh.
U:And I didn't know later (Ul), his last name is GLICK, G-L-I-C-K...
LB:Mmhmm.
U:And he's about, I think thirty-one, I think I read it on the Internet. And
another guy MIKE BIINKA{PH)...
LB:Mmhmm.
U:Had called his mother (Ul) the same thing, and we realized that they all sat
in the back of the plane. So I think that...
LB:So all these guys are together in the back?
U:Yes. So I think they had discussed this together, that they were gonna...

LB:They all discussed it together.
U:Yes. That they were gonna jump the guy that had the bomb, and, last I
heard he said you ready, (Ul), we're gonna roll.
LB:TODD said are you ready, we're gonna roll?
U:Yes.
LB:Okay. That's all you heard?
U:Yes. And that was the last of our conversation.
LB:Alright. I can't tell you how much this means to me and how much of a
comfort you must of been to him at the end.
U:Yes I was, I really was.
LB:I thank you so much for that.
U:Your welcome.
LB:And how much a comfort this is for me just to talk to you and to know I,
you helped him through at the end because I had no idea what that was like
and now I feel like I do, and I feel like there was some peace there.
U:There was, it really was. He wasn't upset at all. He was very peaceful.
LB:(Sigh).
U:l could hear other people on the flight hollering and screaming...
LB:You could hear screaming in the background...
U:But he didn't say anything, I mean, at that point, what happened was that
the terrorist had turned the plane around...

LB: Right.
Li:And he just said oh, S-H-I-T, real loud. Thafs the only thing he had said
ya know, because they had turned the plane around. And it was more like
they didn't know how to control the plane and he just felt, he said, we're
goin1 down, we're goin' down, oh we're coming back up, oh they turned it
around, I think we're goin' back north. Then he said at this point I don't
know where we're going, but I think we're going back north. And um, he
just wanted me to make sure, ya know, that I told you that and your sons
so that they understood that he loved you all very much.
LB:Oh, I just can't-thank you so much. That's just the best gift I could get
right now.
UiYou're welcome, because I felt that we, were very close at that point...
LB:I feel so too.
Li:l was just as calm as he was because he wasn't upset, so I didn't get upset.
LB:Thank you LISA.
U:After the fact, ya know, it took me a while to get myself together.
LB:I can understand that.
Li:l mean when he talked to me about you. And uh, if you ever need
anything, you know, even if it's just to talk...

also a miracle that his call even stayed up because normally in a winter
storm our system can take over two hundred calls simultaneously...
LB:Uhhuh.
U:And this particular day, we took three hundred and sixty simultaneously
and the system actually locked up, it didn't totally crash, but it locked up.
But TODD's call just kept, we stayed on. We stayed on til the...
