SUPPOrTED STUDIES
Supported Studies offers a wide range of courses to students with learning difficulties and disabilities. We are an outstanding and specialist department run by a team of highly experienced and dedicated staff. Our aim is to prepare our students for adulthood by developing a range of independent living skills in order to access supported and paid employment.

Enterprise

The vision of North Hertfordshire College is to become nationally recognised as the foremost entrepreneurial college in the UK. Every course within the Supported Studies department will set up or run an established business enterprise. These enrich the curriculum experience and embed the development of a cross section of employability skills including English, Maths and ICT. This enables students to reach their potential both academically and socially in addition to equipping them for employment to ensure they are truly working towards becoming as independent as possible.

Our priority is to place students in a variety of different employment settings during their time with us. Learn 4 Life
COURSE CODE (FS102)
Learn 4 Life is designed for young people, aged 1624, with severe learning difficulties who want to develop independent living skills. This course aims to improve confidence, social skills, and self-esteem to work towards being as independent as possible. Students will be taught in small groups of 8-10 and may follow an individual learning programme. Our highly competent and experienced support staff will meet and greet the students on arrival and stay with them throughout the day including breaks and lunch.

Pathways
Course Code (FS030)
Pathways is designed for young people, aged 1624, with severe learning difficulties who want to extend their independent living skills at college. This course aims to improve confidence, social skills and selfesteem in preparation for the responsibilities of adult life. Students will be taught in small groups of 8-10. Our highly competent and experienced support staff will meet and greet the students on arrival and stay with them throughout the day including breaks and lunch.

NET is designed for young people, aged 16-19, with moderate learning difficulties who require supported transition from school to college. Students will be taught in small groups of 10-12.
Course duration 1 or 2 years (Full Time over 5 days) Qualification OCN Eastern Region Certificate in Independent Living (Entry Level 1/2) Course location Based at a self-contained unit at the Valley School in Stevenage - Valley Way, Stevenage, Hertfordshire SG2 9AB The group also access Stevenage Centre - Monkswood Way, Stevenage, Hertfordshire SG1 1LA and The Centre for the Arts - Willian Road, Hitchin, Hertfordshire SG4 0LS once a week

Lifeskills is designed for young people, aged 16-24, with moderate learning difficulties who require support to develop independence and awareness of employment opportunities. Students will be taught in small groups of 8-10.

Workskills is designed for young people, aged 16-24, with moderate learning difficulties to help prepare for supported employment and to develop independent living skills. Students will be taught in small groups of 10-12.

Animal Care
COURSE CODE (FS032)
Animal Care is designed for young people, aged 16-24, with moderate learning difficulties to help prepare for employment. Students will be taught in small groups of 12-14. The group access a local farm and stables for one and a half days per week.

This course meets the needs of individuals through project based learning which facilitates the development of:
Animal care skills (onsite at stables and Church Farm) English, Maths and ICT functional skills Personal and social development Communication skills Practical skills Employability and enterprise skills Independent travel skills (if needed)

There are also opportunities for PARTICIPATION IN:


Work placements Enrichment activities including sport, social events, residential trips and external visits

Horticulture

Horticulture is designed for young people, aged 16-24, with moderate learning difficulties to help prepare for employment. Students will be taught in small groups of 12-14. The group have access to a poly-tunnel to embed the practical experience

Retail
Retail is designed to meet the needs of young people, aged 16-24, with moderate learning difficulties to help prepare for employment. Students will be taught in small groups of 12-14. The group is responsible for running the All Sorts College shop for two days a week.

LIVING at Briar patch


Briar Patch is a 24 hour supported housing environment for young adults aged 18+ with learning difficulties. Independent living skills are delivered through an on-site college Stepping Out course, which enables real life experiences to be the key to learning. This life skills course runs in conjunction with a Supported Studies course at a College main site. The length of placement is between 2 and 4 years, dependent on individual ability. The provision is run in partnership with Genesis Housing Association and students have a tenancy agreement with them. An extensive assessment takes place to ensure that young people are able and willing to fully engage with learning in this supported housing environment.
