Hello and welcome to this new edition of our magazine/newspaper. First, we want to thank Kenyans for maintaining peace before, during and after th March 4 General Elections and the period thorugh which the Election petititon was being heard by the Sepreme Court. Now that the elections are over, lets embrace peace and unity as we make this country a better place for each and everyone of us. This is the rst issue of the Spotlight Magazine/Newspaper that will mainly focus on inauguration of President Uhuru Kenyatta and his Deputy William Ruto. Our writers captured every moment of the inauguration ceremony, and the events that ensued thereafter. With the use of quality pictures, we hope you will enjoy reading this edition. The country is in safe hands, this is the message former President Mwai Kibaki had for Kenyans as he retired from close to fty years of active politics. In his farewell speech during the inauguration of Uhuru Kenyatta as the countrys fourth President, Kibaki expressed condence in the election of Kenyatta and Ruto as the countrys head of state and Deputy respectively. He hailed the election of the duo, saying he can now comfortably retire knowing that the country is in good hands. The former President thanked Kenyans for exercising humility and patience as the country went through long period of General Elections and Supreme Court ruling. Kibaki further thanked Kenyans for coming out in large numbers and participating in the General Election. I want to thank you for exercising your democratic rights peacefully and in a honourable manner, he said. Kibaki urged the new government to reach to all Kenyans and unite them; a move he said will promote peaceful coexistence. He urged Kenyans to remain peaceful and focus

Being the day when President Uhuru Kenyatta and his Deputy William Ruto were sworn to ofce, it was also the rst time an inauguration ceremony was being held in public since independence.

Kenyans were joyous and maintained peace in spite of their different political afliations.

Coming days after Kenyans had taken part in March 4 General Elections, long days of waiting for presidential results and certainly the long weeks of Supreme Court hearing and ruling, Kenyans came in style and large numbers to witness the inauguration ceremony at Kasarani. From leaders who came to grace the occasion, donned in colorful attires, Kenyans showed the virtue of patience, determination, peace and unity which they had exercised all through from March 4. They sang patriotic songs, narrated poems and joyfully danced in jubilation as they waited the real events of the day. And as invited guests trickled in, you could see the peace, love and unity written all over the faces of Kenyans at the venue. Finally, as the events of the day proceeded, Kenyans kept the re of peace, love and unity burning. They jubilated every historic event that took place at the stadium; from the oaths, twenty-one gun salutes, exchange of instruments of power, and inspection of guard of honour. 4

Thousands Throng Kasarani To Witness Uhuru, Ruto Inauguration.... By Bernard Ifeza

The entertainment band rehearsing inside Kasarani , thousands of Kenyans who turned out for th inauguration watching.

housands of Kenyans from all parts of the country braced the April 9th chilly morning and sunny afternoon to witness the historic inauguration of President Uhuru Kenyatta and Deputy William Ruto. Men and women, both old and young halted their daily activities to witness Kenyas fourth President being sworn to ofce. Bearing in mind that the day had earlier been gazetted as a national holiday, Kenyans came in large numbers to mark this historic occasion. From each of the 47 counties, Kenyans trickled in at Kasarani, the venue of the event as early as 3 AM. As the old adage goes, Early Bird Catches the Worm, no Kenyan wanted to be past by even a single event; thus the stadium was full to the brink by 6 am. The sixty-thousand sitter stadium was opened at 5 am and Kenyans who came later had to witness the events of the day from outside where large Television sets had been mounted. 5

The cheerful crowds were kept active by entertainers from various groups awaiting the real events of the day. The crowds danced and sang in praise of their newly elected leaders saying the country had made a signicant step to prosperity and peace. In connection to the events that had took place earlier, thats ; the March 4 General Elections and the Supreme Court ruling, Kenyans who attended the inauguration mingled with each other in a show of harmony, peace and reconciliation in spite of their different political ideologies. And as the awaited moment came when the President and his Deputy took their oaths, the joyful crowd could not stop singing and hipping praises at their new leaders. At some point, the Judiciary which was overseeing the oaths had difculties in proceeding as the crowd cheerfully and loudly sang. As the throng at Kasarani sang and danced, other Kenyans across the country were left glued on their TV sets following the inaugural proceedings.

Thousands of Kenyans at Kasarani following the proceedings of Kenyatta, Ruto inaugration. Yet, others opted to follow the proceedings from restaurants and bars as they celebrated a new dawn. The streets of Nairobi remained empty for the better part of the day as all roads led to Kasarani. Finally, as President Kenyatta made his maiden inaugural speech, Kenyans had only one hope that his government will fulll the promises made to them.

he Judiciary led the inauguration of President Uhuru Kenyatta and Deputy William Ruto amid tight security and jubilation from Kenyans who attended the ceremonies occasion at Kasarani stadium. Led by the Chief Justice Willy Mutunga and Judiciary Registrar Gladys Boss Shollei, they oversaw change of power from former president Mwai Kibaki to Uhuru Kenyatta. They guided the newly elected President and his Deputy in taking the oaths as leaders and Kenyans watched.. Ms Shollei led both Kenyatta and Ruto as they recited the oath which according to the constitution was not supposed to be conducted not later than 2 pm in the afternoon. Time factor was the main concern for the Judiciary as the constitution required the duo to have been sworn in latest by 2 pm. After taking the oaths, the new President was handed the instruments of power by former president Mwai Kibaki in presence of the Chief Justice. The instruments of power included; the constitution, the sword among other symbolic tools. It was the rst time in the countrys history an inauguration ceremony was being held in public.

According to Head of Public Service and secretary to the Cabinet, who also chaired the Assumption of Ofce Committee Mr. Francis Kimemia, planning for inauguration ceremony took time and resources. He observed that security was there main concern bearing in mind that the day was to be graced by various international dignitaries. Mr. Kimemia told the Spotlight that it took months of organizing and planning for the event. We put in all the necessary resources to make sure safety of leaders and Kenyans attending the ceremony, he said. Nairobi Deputy Police boss Moses Ombati observed that security was their main concern, saying they burned midnight oil guring out on how to ensure security in and around the stadium. Mr. Ombati stated that though they faced some challenges in controlling the crowds at the venue, everything else remained a success. Even as the day came to and end, with a new President and his Deputy in ofce, Kenyans were satised and great full to the amount of security provided by the men and women in boots.

By Bernard Ifeza gandan President Yoweri Museveni has called on the Kenyatta government to remove trade barriers between the tow countries in order to promote free exchange of goods. Speaking during the inauguration of President Kenyatta, Museveni stated that removing trade restrictions will promote development in the region. He added that there is need for the leaders in the East African region to work together to spur economic prosperity. East Africa can become an economic if we work together as countries, he said. The Ugandan President observed that the discovery of minerals in some countries in the region will go along way in promoting development. He called on the E.A states to coexist peaceful and forge towards creating development opportunities for its citizens.
