Ashley Maldonado November 4, 2013 Introduction to University 101LBC Jacob Keeler Academic and Career Planning Assignment: Part

2 In my opinion, the Myer-Briggs Type Indicator is a test that helps people realize what type of person they are. This is important because people need to realize what traits they have and how to use those to their advantage. The MBTI also helps employers look at the candidates for a particular job and see what type of people they are looking for. For marketing, they would be more apt to hire someone who is an extrovert than someone who is quiet like an introvert. It helps employers pick the best possible people for the job. On the candidates parts, it shows them what types of careers are best for them instead, like a librarian or an engineer vs. a marketing manager, etc. My results were ISFJ. The I stands for introvert. This means that I keep to myself more than extroverts. I solve problems through thinking to myself and I always think before I speak. I want to make sure that what I say will sound intelligent and that when I say it, it pertains to the specific situation at hand. If the remark I have is funny or not factual, I am more likely to keep it to myself rather than share it with others. If I say something and someone asks me to repeat it, I am more likely to not repeat it, for fear of saying something wrong twice. Large groups and places with large crowds drain me and I am drawn to one-on-one contact vs. group projects. I like to gain understanding from quiet contemplation rather than talk it out with someone else. I like environments where I make decisions on my own because in group situations, I fear what

other people will think of my decision. I like work where I can focus on one thing for a long period of time with little variance. The S stands for sensing. This means that I am aware of people and I can see things more clearly in their shoes. I can see both sides of an argument and may be open to the oppositions side vs. an intuiting person. I am generally in the here and now and do not often think about the past or future when working. I trust my senses, not my gut feeling. This means that if my gut says something tastes bad, I will give it a try and trust that if it is bad, my sense of taste and smell will tell me, not just my gut. I am very detail-oriented. Details and precision are what I strive for most. The big picture is not the most important part to me, it is the details. I like things to be realistic and practical. I enjoy hands-on training and I can learn more easily from this type of learning. The F stands for feeling. This means that I am centered on people; other people to be exact. I do not matter in the equation as long as someone else is involved. I will do anything to create harmony between me and someone else, even if it makes me uncomfortable or makes me do more work. Conflict is hard on me and draining, therefore, I avoid it. Confrontation scares me, so I work extra hard for the peace between people. I value attitudes. I can easily empathize and sympathize with people in hard or emotional situations. I look at how it matters to other people and take into consideration why someone feels the way they do, not just the fact that they feel it. I think about cause and effect more than I do about comparison. I am considered soft and I like to fix peoples problems, even when I am not asked to, or asked not to. The J stands for judging. This means I value time and try not to waste even a second. I enjoy organizing and planning things out to the very smallest details. I get all my work done before I play, otherwise I get high anxiety. I like handouts, charts, graphs and other means of

organizing new information that I learned. Generally, science and math classes are easier for me to understand because there is one answer, no ifs, ands or buts. Generally language classes are harder for me because I am not flexible to another language or cultural idea. I have a strong work ethic and I always ask for additional knowledge. I am not content with the bare minimum. I like knowing all of it, in case of an emergency. I like structure and too much change or risk makes me anxious and frustrated. I fully agree with all of my scores from the MBTI. I am an introvert and I enjoy it. I like reading and writing and keeping to myself. Being at parties wears me out fast and I always think before I speak. I like facts and details because there is no debating it. Someone cant tell me Im wrong on a fact. I am a kinesthetic learner, meaning hands on is the best way for me to learn. I like harmony in people and generally, I would rather do an entire group project by myself than confront another member about his/her lack of participation. I like people to be happy around me and I avoid all kinds of conflict. I like structure and order and it frustrates me when my plans are not concrete. Times and places are the keys for me. Math and science classes are easiest for me because there are graphs and charts and only one solid answer every time, unconditionally. The first job that is highly associated with ISFJs is a licensed practical nurse. The median salary for this job is $42,228 in Michigan and $41,540 in the United States. The job outlook is very bright, particularly in the areas of long term care, physicians offices and home health care. Its growing at a rate of about 20-28%. A licensed practical nurse only needs a oneyear technical school or vocational school degree to get a job, but they cannot do certain things such as administer medicine. A major of skill that EMU offers is the nursing program or essentially a major in biology with a minor in nursing. This would get you a degree above this job, but you could still be hired on this level.

A second job that has a very high percentage of ISFJs is typist. The median salary for Michigan is $37,300 and the median for the United States is $35,300. The job outlook is declining rapidly, since so much technology has come out in todays society. It is declining at a rate of about -10% or lower. Some typists can go to college to get some education or even an associates degree, but the majority of students only have a high school diploma or equivalent in this career path. A major is not available at EMU since you do not need any college degree or education. EMU does offer typing classes though for those typists who are so inclined. The third job that was mostly ISFJs was an aeronautical engineer. The median salary in Michigan is $94,600 and the median salary for the United States is $103,700. The outlook for this particular job is slower than average, but still increasing. It is at a rate of about 3-9%. Most of the aerospace engineers only have a bachelors degree but some students have a masters degree. The median pay can be achieved with only a bachelors degree. A degree in aerospace engineering is offered at Emu and a graduate program is offered through U of M, if you wanted to go that high. I probably wont use it except maybe to see which areas I need to work on most for my chosen career pathway. I have chosen a career that has the littlest percentage of ISFJs. I am still going to go for it, but I will use my test results to see what I need to work on to become more successful in the career. I would definitely recommend this to other students and even adults because it helps them realize the jobs or majors that would best suit them that they might not have even thought of. On the other hand, it could help people see what they need to fix, if their chosen career isnt on the list.
