Batson Management Communications November 6, 2013 Article Review 2 The article titled Creating an Environment for Your Team to Strive was written by Esteban Quiros, CMA, who is the North America Supply Chain F&A manager, Procter & Gamble, San Jos Service Center, San Jos, Costa Rica. Quiros focusses on two abilities that every leader should possess in order to motivate the team to produce their best work. He states, Two things every leader needs to do is listen and observe. Utilizing these skills, you can create an environment in which your team can work at its best, open lines of communication with team members, and motivate them to do better work (1). Opening the lines for communication with team members will allow managers to tune into what drives and motivates each individual, their goals, and aspiration. This creates an opportunity for leaders, to communicate to teams how the organization and its goals can help the team achieve their own goals (2). Effective listening and communication skills build trust and encourage members to embrace the functions of working within a team and sharing useful information to achieve a common goal. Quiros states, After more than 17 years of managing teams, I continue to marvel at the level of engagement and accountability that comes from people who feel a sense of purpose and personal commitment toward the organizations goals(3).

Through encouraging communication and listening to feedback, a manager can easily observe the situation and design the best method for completing the task. This type of leadership is actually creating an environment for the team rather than a set of guidelines to follow or a chain of command to follow. By creating a striving environment, mentoring and coaching opportunities are available, where roles are challenging, and where people are empowered to influence improvements and change. The main point is to observe the obstacles and seek opportunities to help the team overcome them (4). Quiros attention is placed on leadership skills in his everyday practices. He explains that, during his time at Proctor & Gamble, he has admired the managers strong emphasis to win on everyday moments that can inspire employees, appropriately called Employee Moments of Truth. Managers see these moments as opportunities to increase capability and performance that ultimately enable people to work at their peak he states (5). He recognizes that team members tend to lose interest at some point and gives the best techniques for creating an environment where people are engaged and feel valued. This author truly believes in motivating and empowering the people around him. Managers who listen and observe their team members are better equipped to recognize obstacles and implement solutions to overcome them. The most appropriate question from this article is, Wouldnt you want to work for someone who listens and helps you? (6). Of course, we all would want to work for someone with those qualities.
