Prof. Oettinger -
I hope you are well. As of this past Monday, I have officially started with the
Commission. If the first few days are any indication of what is to come, I have
little doubt that the Commission's work will prove to be most interesting and
rewarding. I am still awaiting my clearance, which hopefully should come in the
near future.
Thank you for your interest in bringing me onto the ISB's task force. I appreciate
the confidence you have in me that I might contribute meaningfully to the ISB's
efforts. I have spoken with the General Counsel of the Commission, who indicated
that, because my duties for the Commission will center on examining the IC's
performance, it is best for me to not to be selected for or appointed to the ISB
task force or to do any work for the task force until after I finish my work for
the Commission. According to the statute creating the Commission, the
Commission's final report is due in May 2004.
I apologize for conveying this message via email rather than via phone, but I have
no dedicated phone line at the Commission given that I just started, and I cannot
take my cellphone into the SCIF, so I am essentially incommunicado during the day
for the next several days until I receive an actual desk, phone, etc. at the
office. But I wanted to contact you as soon as possible after I spoke with the
General Counsel, so I am reduced to sending you an email on this matter.
Thank you, again, for considering me for the ISB. I look forward to being in touch
with you soon.
Warm regards,
Gordon
