Wilson EDUC 353 Name: Amanda Paxson Date: December 1, 2013 Target Grade Level: 3rd Grade Curriculum

Topic: Science Climate and Weather UbD Lesson Plan Template Stage 1: Desired Results Established Goals: 3-ESS2-1. Represent data in tables and graphical displays to describe typical weather conditions expected during a particular season. [Clarification Statement: Examples of data could include average temperature, precipitation, and wind direction.] [Assessment Boundary: Assessment of graphical displays is limited to pictographs and bar graphs. Assessment does not include climate change.] http://eo.ucar.edu/educators/ClimateDiscovery/LIA_lesson1_9.28.05.pdf Understandings: Students will understand Weather the state of the atmosphere of the current wind, temperature, cloudiness, precipitation Climate the average weather over a given period of time Seasons the four different periods of the year consisting of fall, winter, spring, summer Temperature the measure of warmth or coldness Fahrenheit 32 degrees = ice point, 212 degrees = steam point Celsius 0 degrees = ice point, 100 degrees = steam point Precipitation rain, snow etc. Wind air in natural motion, the moving of air. Global warming - an increase in the earth's average atmospheric temperature. It causes changes in climate. Weather changes from state to state as well as season-to-season. How can global warming effect our atmosphere? Essential Question(s): Does the weather seem to stay the same from year to year? What can cause a sudden change in temperature or weather conditions from year to year?

Students will know How to collect and graph weather data.

Students will be able to Collect data.

Understand the distinctions between weather and climate. How the weather effects our daily lives. What weather is - the state of the atmosphere of the current wind, temperature, cloudiness, precipitation What climate is - the average weather over a given period of time What global warming is - an increase in the earth's average atmospheric temperature. It causes changes in climate. The measurement we use is Fahrenheit. How to represent data (temperatures, rain etc.) over a week. How to navigate www.weather.com to find the weather. Stage 2: Assessment Evidence Performance Tasks: The teacher will talk to the students about the weather. The teacher will ask the students to go outside and observe what they feel, see or hear. The teacher will then have the students share what they observed about the weather. The teacher will then take the temperature and come to a conclusion about the temperature. The teacher will compare their findings to that of the weather for the day from www.weather.com The teacher will show the students how to find the weather online using the smart board. The teacher will pull up www.weather.com for the students to see. The teacher will then have the students fill out the weather data worksheet for that day. Each day the students will fill out a new weather data worksheet, for 5 days straight. http://eo.ucar.edu/educators/ClimateDiscovery/LIA_lesson1_9.28.05.pdf (Weather data worksheet) The teacher will then pull up the weather for the day on the smart board and compare the students findings to that of the Meteorologists. Other Evidence: Students will observe the temperature, precipitation, wind etc. for a 5-day period. They will participate in a grand conversation comparing and contrasting their findings to that of the meteorologists from www.weather. Tell the temperature using a thermometer. Compare data to the year before. Show any changes in weather from the year prior.

When the 5 days are up, the students will be asked to work as Meteorologists themselves and make a 5-day weather report for that upcoming week. The students will work in pairs. This work will be done in class. The students will research online and find the predicted temperatures, precipitation etc. Each pair will be given a different city to research. This will show the diverse weather among the country. The students will be asked to present their weather timeline to the class. The students will also be asked to graph the changes in weather from day to day on the given graph paper.

com. The students will then be asked to be a Meteorologist on their own and research the weather for their given city. This will show the changes in temperature, rain, and wind across the United States. The students will then be asked to make a timeline and graph their data to present to the class.
