Answers to this paper must be written on the paper provided separately. You will not be allowed to write during the first 15 minutes. This time is to be spent in reading the Question Paper. The time given at the head of this paper is the time allowed for writing the answers. Attempt all the questions from Section I and any four questions from Section II. Question 2 (a) A ray of light is incident from glass to air. What should be the minimum angle of incidence for which the ray gets totally reflected to glass? Given the refractive index of glass is 1.5. [2] (b) Draw a labelled diagram for the construction of virtual image by a convex lens. [2]

(c) Draw a labelled diagram to show the deviation of a monochromatic ray after passing through a prism of glass. [2] (d) In above question (c), write down the conditions for minimum deviation. (e) Explain the blue colour of sky. [2] [2]

Question 3 (a) A conductor is carrying 1 A current. How many electrons are flowing through it per second? [2] (b) Specific heat of copper is 0.09. How much heat energy is required to raise the temperature of 1 Kg copper block by 1K? [2] (c) A particle is thrown vertically with a velocity v. What is its potential energy at the highest point of its path? [2] (d) State the factors on which the magnitude of force acting on a current carrying conductor placed in a magnetic field in a direction perpendicular to it depends. [2] (e) Show the variation of the voltage drop across a resistor as function of the current passing through it. [2]

Question 4 (a) Which of the following radioactive rays does/do not deviate while passing through an electric field applied perpendicular to its/there path? 1. 2. 3. [2]

(d) Give one example each of natural and forced vibrations.

(e) Some amount of ice at 5C is started heating. The variation in the temperature is shown in the graph below. Find the temperature corresponding to the points marked as A, B, C, D in the graph. [2]

Question 5 (a) Mention three renewable sources of energy. [3]

(b) Define Mechanical Advantage (MA) Velocity Ratio (VR) and efficiency () of a machine. [3] (c) Name the physical quantity which has SI unit Kg m2 s-2. Show that the quantity remains conserved for a body falling freely under gravity. [4]

Question 6 (a) The numbers of turns in the primary and secondary coils of a transformer are NP and Ns respectively. How are NP and Ns related in (1) a step up transformer (2) a step down transformer? [3] (b) Name a material that can be used as fuse in household circuits. Explain the importance of fuse in the main circuit. [3]

(c) An electrical appliance is rated 500W 250V. This appliance is connected to 250V mains. Calculate (i) the current drawn (ii) the electrical energy consumed in 60 hours (iii) the cost of electric energy consumed at a rate of Rs.5.00 per kWh. [4]

Question 7 (a) Define Loudness, pitch and quality of sound. [3]

(b) The refractive indices of water and glass with respect to air are 4/3 and 3/2 respectively. Find the ratio of the speed of light in glass to the speed in water. [3] (c) (i) Name any four regions of electromagnetic spectrum in increasing order of frequency. (ii) Calculate the refractive index of a liquid with respect to air applying Snell's law (use geometric construction). [4]

Question 8 (a) Find the equivalent resistance between the points A and O in the following circuit. [3]

(b) Find the frequency of an electromagnetic radiation of frequency 30 MHz. (c) What is greenhouse effect? Discuss few steps to prevent it.

Question 9 (a) Calculate the amount of heat given out while 400 g of water at 30 C is cooled and converted into ice at -2 C. Specific heat capacity of water = 4200 J/kg K Specific heat capacity of ice = 2100 J/ kg K Specific latent heat of fusion of ice = 336000 J/kg [3]

(b) A body of mass m1 of a substance of specific heat capacity c1, at a temperature t1 is mixed with another body of mass m2 of specific heat capacity c2 at a lower temperature t2. Deduce an expression for the temperature of the mixture t3. [3] (c) Draw a labelled diagram of an alternating current generator. Write the function of its two main parts. [4]

Question 10 (a) (i) Define work function of a metal. (ii) State two factors on which the rate of emission of thermions depends. [3]

(b) A radioactive nucleus of atomic number Z and mass number M successively releases one particle and two particles. What are the atomic number and the mass number of the daughter nucleus? [3] (c) Radioactive materials as an alternative source of energy must be used wisely. Give reasons to justify this statement. [4]
