A is for After Life The after life is life after death. The ancient Egyptians believed that the afterlife was a heavenly place with a heavenly Nile River. The Egyptians called this place the land of the Two Fields. At first only pharaohs could travel to the land of the Two Fields, but the god Osiris opened the door to the afterlife to everyone.

B is for Beetles To the ancient Egyptians, the scarab beetle is the symbol of hope and restoration of life. Seals were created with the shape of the scarab beetle and were used to stamp documents. They even made scarab jewelry using precious gems and painted clay.

C is for Cat Almost all Egyptian homes had a cat. But they were not pets. The Egyptians believed that cats had powers that would keep their homes and children from danger. They kept a cat for protection.

D is for Dynasty A dynasty is a series of rulers that are all from the same family. The first dynasty was from 3100 BC to 2890 BC.

E is for Elite Elite people are people of wealth and power. Some are family members of pharaohs. Others get their wealth by having a talent like making jewelry or making hieroglyphics.

F is for Five-string harp The five-string harp is arched with a curved neck. Made usually out of cedar wood.

G is for Gods There are many gods that the Egyptians worshiped. Most where based on the four elements, Earth, wind, fire, and water.

H is for Hieroglyphics( hy-ruh-GLIH-fiks ) Hieroglyphics is the form of writing that the Egyptians Used. They would put it in tombs, on jewelry, and on stone slabs.

I is for Isis Isis is one of the most important goddess in ancient Egypt. She was regarded as the feminine counterpart to Osiris.in the Osiris legend she was seen as a protector of the dead. She had wings and may have represented the wind.

J is for Jackal headed god Anubis is one of many gods of Egypt. He has the head of a jackal. He is normally depicted in black. This black represents the silt deposit from the Nile, which the Egyptians believed symbolized rebirth.

K is for Khufu Khufu was a Egyptian ruler. He is most famous for building the pyramid of Giza as his tomb. He was responsible for centralizing the government and limiting powers vested in Egyptian priests.

L is for Lotus flower The lotus flower was seen as purity and beauty. It was also symbolized as rebirth and the sun. The Egyptians observed that in the night-time the lotus closed its pedals and sank into the water. When the flower came back up it reminded the Egyptians of the sun rising.

M is for Mummies The process of raping the body is called mummification. Theyd rap the body in linins. The mummification process took seventy days. They removed all the organs except the heart, they believed the heart was the center of a persons being and intelligence.

N is for Nile river The Nile River is the longest river in the world. Its about 4,160 miles long. The silt from the Nile created a fertile green valley across the desert.

O is for Osiris The god Osiris is the god of the dead. He was shown with white mummy wrappings and a black beard. His skin was green to represent vegetation.

P is for Pharaoh Pharaohs are the ancient kings or rulers of Egypt. The Egyptians believed that the pharaoh was half-man and halfgod.

Q is for Qebehsennuf Qebehsennufs duty was to protect the entrails of the dead. He would also store them in his canopy jar. After that the body would be mummified.

R is for Rosetta Stone A Rosetta Stone was a huge stone slab. It was inscribed with hieroglyphics. They were used to tell stories and collect data.

S is for Sarcophagus A sarcophagus is the case used to keep mummified bodys. They are made of stone and have special markings on them to identify the individual inside.

T is for Tomb A tomb is a place where the mummified bodys are kept. Because the Egyptians believed in the afterlife they would shower the walls with hieroglyphics so that the bodys spirit would be comfortable.

U is for Upper Egypt Upper Egypt is the strip of land on both sides of the Nile valley that extends between Nubia, and downriver ( northward ) to Lower Egypt.

V is for Valley of the kings The Valley of the Kings is a valley in the afterlife. The Egyptians believed that the afterlife was like Egypt. It had a Nile River and a valley. They believed that only kings and pharaohs could go to the afterlife.

W is for Winnowing fan A winnowing fan is used to separate grain from chaff. Husks were blown away by the wind made from the winnowing fan and the grains would fall.

X is for X-rays of mummies With todays modern technology we can take x-rays of mummies. With the x-rays we can digitally reconstruct the body.

Y is for Yinepu Yinepu ( also know as Anubis ) had the head of a jackal. He was the caretaker and watcher over the dead. He was put on the walls of all tombs so that he could always watch over the spirits.

Z is for Zodiac The zodiac is a sign based on when you were born. The signs are based on gods. If you were born in a certain range of days in a year, then you are that groups sign.
