Annotated Bibliography Linnekin, Baylen. The Problem with Federal Food-Labeling Laws. Reason.com. Reason Network, 10 August 2013. Web. 28 October 2013. The author approaches the food labeling discussion while talking about gluten free labeling. Baylen discusses the fact that it took the FDA 10 years to approve the gluten free labeling laws, only to leave consumers no better off seeing that gluten free is not necessarily gluten free. Linnekin also tackles the topics of all natural lawsuits. Currently, Mission (tortilla chips) and Chobani (greek yogurt) are being sued because both companies claim that they are all natural. Mission is in a law suit because some believe that a bioengineered seed doesnt account for all natural products, and Chobanis accusers say that because they use dyes made from fruits and vegetables that their product is not all natural. The industry still dose not favor the GMO laws, but they want to discourage states from going any further. In addition, she states that if companies work towards a national law, they will fight for the weakest legislation possible while including that states cannot make stronger labeling guidelines. From the sound of Clares article, it also appears that the biggest push to create GMO laws is because of genetically modified food. Additionally, she states that currently there are a total of 18 states with GMO food labeling laws pending. Abrams Lindsay. Food industrys master plan to stop GMO labeling revealed. Salon. Since organic foods can be cheaper than GM foods, Shen suggests that we should work with farmers to decrease GM products, since farmers are less than keen on GM seeds.
