• Airbus 380 faces issues:


o Delivery delayed by 6-7 months
 Due to production ramp-up issues
o Will limit aircraft delivery to 9 in 2007
o Found bottlenecks in the manufacturing and installation of electrical
systems
o Shortfall of 5-9 aircraft deliveries in 2008
o Shortfall of 5 in 2009 expected
o 1st flight took place in Toulouse, France on April 27, 2005
o 4 more aircraft have taken to the air
o 1st delivery is expected at end of 2006 to Singapore Airlines

• Goodrich and the A380:


o Goodrich Corporation announced the A380 delivery delay will
reduce their annual sales during the 2006-2008 period
o Impact on cash flow is expected to be temporary
o Excess inventory in 2006 will be delivered in 2007
o Provides products in A380, main body and wing landing gear
systems, evacuation slide systems, LED exterior lighting

• American 757s:
o AA will further simplify its fleet by returning 19 non-standard 757-
200 models
o Will save money, simplify operations and improve efficiency
o Lacked important amenities:
 Oversized overhead bins
 Power ports
 Required higher maintenance and equipment cost
o Will reduce lease time cost by $50 Million
o Will avoid costly interior upgrades required to match their remaning
757 fleet

• Singapore Airlines:
o Signed letter of intent to purchase 20 787-9
o Purchase rights for another 20 aircraft in the future
o Deliveries scheduled between early 2011 and mid 2013
o 900 model has the largest cabin and longest range
o Carries between 250 and 290 paxs
o Space for 20 tons of cargo
o Range of 8,600 to 8,800 nautical miles
o Routes to North Asia, Indian Subcontinent, and middle east

• Dallas Love Field:


o Week of June 12th the City of Dallas, City of Fort Worth, SWA, and
AA reached an agreement to phase out the Wright Amendment
o Tickets can be direct to all 50 states and D.C. as long as aircraft
stops in Wright Amendment-approved state en-route cities
o Provisions include $150-200 million upgrade to Love
o DAL will reduce to 20 gates from 32
o SWA will lease 16
o AA will lease 2
o Continental 2
o Agreement will eliminate nonstop flights to any U.S. destination
within 8 years from DAL
o Will benefit the public in terms of convenient connecting service and
low fares from North Texas to the rest of SWA network

• Fly Asia Express:


o Malaysia plans August 1 startup of rural air services
o Under subcontract with AirAsia
o Will use 6 Fokker 50s and 5 DH1O 6s
o Acquired routes from Malaysia Airlines

• Boeing:
o Unveiled first cargo loader to transport large 787 assemblies
o Longest in the world, 118 feet 1 inch
o Designed and built by TLD at its facility in Shearbrook, Quebec
o Will use to load 3 specifically modified 744s
o Will allow Boeing to transport major 787 components by air

• Airline Fair Increases:


o Last minute business travelers and some first-class flyers will pay
more during summer 2006
o Airfares are rising due to persistent high fuel prices
o Delta has raised one-way fare (domestic) on unrestricted first-class
and walk-up coach tickets by $50
o Delta’s most expensive one-way domestic and first-class fares have
now increased $200 since January 2005
 Instituted cheaper ticket change fees and fewer restrictions

• Delta:
o Launch high-end transcontinental service in August by renovating
100 757s and 737s for long-haul routes
o Will include 2 cabins. PTV and music
o Renovated planes will be available in 2 years for domestic routes

o This new service is part of Delta’s efforts in bankruptcy to cut cost
and boost revenue

• NBA Playoffs and AA:


o AA had the rare opportunity to slam dunk its brand into the minds
of NBA fans
o AA pays more than $8 million/year in naming rights
o Each arena accommodates 19,000 people

• New Safety Margins:


o New Policy will require Part 91, 121, 125, and 135 to jet pilots to
land near where available runway at least landing distance plus
15%
o If conditions deteriorate in route, pilots have to recalculate actually
landing distance and the 15% safety margin
o If total is greater than the available runway length, the pilots must
land at another airport
o Operations have until October 1st to comply
o Policy derives from the SWA 737 runway overrun at Chicago Midway
last December

• Drug Test and License:


o June 21, 2006: FAA amended airman medical standards
o Refusal to submit a required drug & alcohol test = disqualification
from holding an airman medical certificate
o Some penalties results from any pilot with an alcohol test result of
.04 or higher

• CONTINENTAL AIRLINES:
o CAL has surpassed NWA to become the 4th largest U.S. carrier
o First change in top-five rankings since 2001
o SWA may be close to tying NWA for #5 spot
o SWA has expanded seat capacity by 9%
o Rankings are based on carriers reports through April on traffic or
the number of miles flown by paying passengers
