Curriculum Paper

Course Title: Intensive Reading

Teacher: Ronica Cormier

Mission Statement: Our Mission at the Julia Landon College Preparatory and
Leadership Development School is to create college bound students with a deep
commitment to public service and a true understanding of their leadership skills
within the global community.

Course Overview: This course focuses on enhancing each student’s ability to read
on multiple fronts using technology and print. This program offers the student
access to differentiated instruction, adaptive instructional software, high-
interest literature, and direct instruction in reading and writing strategies.

Tentative Course Outline:

6th Grade: Main Idea and Detail, Sequence of Events, Cause and Effect, Compare and
Contrast, Making Inferences, Story Elements: Character and Theme, Summarize,
Problem and Solution, Story Elements Plot and Setting

7th and 8th Grade: Main Idea and Details, Sequence of Events, Character/ Theme,
Summarize

Student Evaluation: Students will be evaluated on Portfolios that they will keep
in class. Students will be evaluated by formal and informal assessment. Students
will be evaluated on completion of assignments and tests. Students will be
evaluated on their individual role in their groups.

Educational Materials: Portfolios, rBook, Julia Landon Agenda,


Pen/Pencil/Highlighter.

Homework Policy: Unless you are excused absence, no late homework will be
accepted.

Late Work Policy: Work that is turned in late is subject to a grade letter
deduction for each day late, except homework! (please see homework policy)

Make-up Work Policy: When students are absent from this class, they should go to
the “make up binder and look over the assignments missed.” Or they may access what
they missed by going onto the Julia Landon website and accessing my blog. If
students have questions they should come to me for clarification.

Grade Recovery Policy: Students will be offered grade recovery as outlined in the
Duval County Pupil Progression Plan found on the Duval County Public Schools web
page.

Parent/Teacher Conferences: All Parent/Teacher conferences are to be scheduled


through the Guidance Office at 346-5650 ext.114.

Tutoring Schedule: Students will be given a schedule of tutoring times during the
first week of school.

Grading Scale: Students will be evaluated in accordance with the standard Duval
County Public Schools’ grading scale.

Progress Reports: In addition to report cards issued at the end of each quarter,
students
will receive progress reports on 9/22, 10/8, 2/24 and 5/6. Students
earning a grade of “D” or “F” on a progress report will be required to
return the progress report signed by the parent/guardian within two
days.
