What is Partial Discharge?

Inside all insulation systems exist imperfections known as voids. There can be a number of causes, but in the end these voids act as catalysts for the creation of partial discharge (PD). PD is the localized movement of charge that damages surrounding insulation. Over time this cumulative damage can lead to a failure. Insulation degradation is critical a problem in high-voltage substations. Early detection is key.

On-Line Substation Surveys

Substation surveys are a critical component to condition-based maintenance programs. Your first line in diagnostic condition assessment, this cost-effective approach can cover a large area while your equipment remains in service. Used for the early recognition of partial discharge, areas of concern can be further investigated with more on-line and off-line tests, when needed.

On-Line Substation Testing and Monitoring

Doble offers a suite of testing and monitoring solutions to further investigate and monitor critical assets for signs of partial discharge. Whether you are testing air, oil or gas insulated apparatus, Dobles suite of partial discharge solutions will help you spot the signs of insulation degradation all without taking your equipment off-line - saving time, money and valuable resources.

Partial Discharge Solutions Support and Services

Its not always possible to maintain PD experts on your staff. Rely on Dobles engineers for speciality diagnostic testing and advanced engineering support. Options include Services Agreements for leased and purchased equipment and expert Consulting and Testing services.

Doble PDS100 Detects and Locates sources of Partial Discharge

An RFI survey was carried out on an entire 400 kV substation. Measurements of RFI were recorded at various survey locations for future trending. During the survey, a strong source of PD was triangulated to a bus coupler isolator. Measurements of RFI emissions taken at the suspect apparatus are shown in RED and compared with the baseline measurement, shown in BLUE, for that section of the substation. Uplifts of 60 dB and 30 dB were evident at spot frequencies 400 MHz and 1000 MHz respectively, providing evidence that this apparatus was exhibiting significant signs of deterioration and that a fault condition existed.

PDS100
The PDS100 is an RFI surveying tool that is designed for use in a live substation. It comes with PDS Viewer software to save results and overlay them for comparison. Without the need for outages or special connections, the unit can detect partial discharge in a few seconds, making it an costeffective and useful tool for a condition based maintenance program. This safe and efficient tool is advanced and userfriendly making it ideal for every service or test team.

Partial Discharge Sensors

HIGH FREQUENCY CURRENt TRANSfORMER SENSOR A high frequency current transformer sensor can be clipped on an apparatus ground wire and connected to a PDS100 to confirm internal PD activity. It is possible to scan for electric pulses (f<200MHz) as evidence for partial discharge to earth. TRANSIENt EARtH VOLtAGE PROBES Useful for locating partial discharge in metal clad switchgear and internally in transformers, a Doble capacitive Transient Earth Voltage (TEV) probe can be connected directly on the antenna input of the PDS100. Move the sensor across a grounded metal surface to find location of the strongest signal amplitude.

DFA100
The DFA100, Dielectric Fault Analyzer, is a handheld and battery powered instrument used for monitoring acoustic emissions. The acoustic emission diagnostic technique is a non-intrusive, in-service test used for monitoring acoustic signals produced by partial discharge and loose components. The DFA100 is specifically designed to detect faults in grounded SF6 gas-insulated systems and can also be applied to grounded oil-filled instrument transformers. The DFA100 is an easy-to-use, advanced detection tool that can differentiate between partial discharge, particles and mechanical defects. An optional HotStick is available for on-line cable testing.

LDP-5
The LDP-5 is a partial discharge surveying tool used to detect PD activity in cable sealing ends and joints, surge arrestors, power transformers, voltage transformers and electrical machines. It is a battery-powered, portable device that can be used on-site and in a laboratory setting.

DFA500
The Doble DFA500 is a portable, multi-channel diagnostic tool used to identify partial discharge, particles and mechanical defects in gas-insulated apparatus (GIS). It features real-time measurement on 4 acoustic channels and 1 UHF channel simultaneously. The DFA500 can be used on in-service apparatus since all testing happens on the grounded, outside surface of the GIS. The unique combination of simultaneous ultrasound and UHF signal measurements shows instantly on the DFA500s integrated screen. This makes it easy to locate and troubleshoot problems like mechanical vibration or insulation degradation that are often associated with GIS. Readings are wirelessly synchronized to the utility frequency to eliminate white noise.

The DFA500 can work with your GIS monitoring system

By connecting to the monitoring systems pre-installed UHF antennae, you can see inside the GIS and determine if the system gave a false alarm or confirm the presence of UHF radiation from partial discharge. No monitoring system? The DFA500 is also equipped with a spacer antenna to be used on polymeric spacers. With this antenna, sections of the GIS can quickly be scanned for problems identified by UHF/RFI signals.
