2.1 All1EllANCE OF FIRE DETECTORS

Clutlon: Prior to canylng out anr maintenance or 1atlng on a ftre alarm srstam.

Ille relevant autllorttl llld staff 1hould be notlfted.

OVer time, 1he sensltlvHy of asmoke de1ector can change owing to abulld-up of dirt

In1hede1ector chamber. Inmost modem detectors this effect Isslowed by the lncfuslon
of drift compensation functions, however 1he build up can stIll lead10 a risk of false alarms or
change In1he de1ector sensltlvHy.
The frequency of maln1enance requirements on adetector wlll depend on site condHlons,
obviously the dirtier the sHe the more frequen1 maln1enance wfll be required. Tiie optimum
frequency for a given sHe should be determined over a period of time after the
commissioning of 1he11re system.
All System Sensor detectors (smoke, heat, or muHi-criteria) are designed such that they
can be easily dismantled for main1enanc:e. Instructions are given for rnain1enance in1he
instruction manual supplied with each detector. Normally it issufficient1o use compressed
air or avacuum cleaner to remove dust from 1he detector chamber.

Once maintenance on afire detection system has been completed, itshould be re-tested.

2.7 ROUTllE FUICTIONAL 1111111OF FlDE'IECTORS

BS5839Part1: 2002 gives a range of recommendations regarding

routine testing of a11re detection system.
A weekly test should becarried out on a11re detection system by activating a
manual call poln1toensure1hat allfire alarm signals operate correctly, and that
the 111proprlate alarm signals are dearly received. This test should be carried
out at approximately the same time each week, using adlfferen1call
poln1Inrotation.
Inorder to comply wHh BS5339 Part 1:2002, periodic Inspections, servicing
and functional tes1s of1he fire alarm system should be carried out at
Intervals de1ermlned by
an assessment of the sHe andtype of system Installed, not
normally greater 1han six months.
Itis recommended 10 perform regular functional 1ests on all fire
de1ectors annually. These annual tests may be carried out over 1he
course of two or more service visits during the 1welve-mon1h period.
System Sensor detectors incfude various means of testing the system without
using smoke, dependent on the detector range being1estad, incfuding magnet
switches and laser test tools.
Codes and standards (in the UK BS5839Part 1:2002, Section
6) now require functional tests tD introduce amoke 1hrough 1he smoke
detector vents and in1o the sensing chamber. Halso calla for heat detectors tD
ba tested by means of asuitable heat source, and n01by a live flame. CO fire
detectors now
also need10 befunctionally teated by a method that confirms 1hat carbon
monoxide can enter 1he chamber.
Many Installers use aset or equlprnen1that consists ar a complete range of
test1ools 1hat locate on1he end of1he pole such as 1hose available from No
Cllmb Products L1d (www. nocllmb.com) In order to aid compllance with
codes. Tools
exist for 1estlng smoke, heat. and coftre detectors, whilst
also enabling them to be accessed and removed at heigh1s up
109 metBrs from the ground.
Using tunctlonal test equipment, along wHh 1hose maintenance tDols
available from System Sensor, should enst1re that1he system remains at Hs
optimum operation for many years.

3. 300 SERIES CONVENTIONAL FIRE DETECTOR RANGE

The 300 Series range of detectors is produced using the latest in manufacturing and design techniques, pushing out the boundaries of existing conventional detector mchnology. W-rth a
muHitude of innovative features, Series 300 detectors 'act conventionally, think intelligently'.

300 Series detectors can be used inconjunction with the S300RPTU remote hand-held programming unit to gain access b> many advanced features incfuding: read/write last maintenance date; read
chamber contamination level; read value of the smoke or thermal element and perform an alarm test. Each unit can be programmed with a unique address. When used inconjunction with the
S300ZDU and acompatible control this address will be displayed on the S300ZDU whenever the detector is in alarm.
All the features \lfa the hand-held programming unit are achieved el'fectlvely and effortlessly without the needto remove the detector or having to gain direct physIcal access (other than
by the use of 'No Climb Products' or similar servicing tool), saving valuable commissioning I maintenance dme. They provide an end user with the conftdence to know that the nresystem
Isbeing regularly serviced and that ItIsoperating at It's optimum level, with minimum disruption 10business activities.
