Hackney English 101: Rhetoric 16 September 2013 Statement of Scope for the Annotated Bibliography The American Dream isnt ideal for everyone. Some find it hard to obtain the American dream due to who they are, what they look like and where they come from. Gabriel Thompson sees this through his own eyes in Working in the Shadows, with the immigrant workers. Discrimination and racism is much alive in the work field. Growing up we are constantly told to be ourselves and take pride in who we are. How can we take pride in who we are, when we are constantly judged and overlooked? America is all about freedom, we have the right to be who we are; and that shouldnt define our work ethic. This essay will explore the ways racism and discrimination are active in companies and businesses today. While some companies have joined movements and are trying to enforce rules that eliminate racism, it is still an issue that greatly affects the lives of some people. I will examine the complications that come with racism and the importance of fixing the problem. This selected bibliography includes sources that address statistics, interviews, and information on specific acts of racism. Bucalos, Dennis and Smith all address the effects of racism. Bucalos states it starts from a simple job application, Dennis adds the change in wages and lastly it finishes with Smith, stating a shift in authority. The interview with Julie Chen discusses an actual example of a true act of racism and how she had to alter the way she looked for her career. Dewey wraps up the essay on a more positive note; working on the concept of changing the work fields and eliminating racism and discrimination. Together, these sources provide information on most aspects of racism and discrimination in the work field.

Annotated Bibliography Bucalos, Dean. "We Must Act To Fight Racism." Courier - Journal; Louisville, Ky.: n. pag. elibrary. Web. 13 Sept. 2013. Dean argues that although job applications say race is not a factor in getting a job, it is. Job applications ask for race, but shortly add that it will not affect the chances of getting a job. Studies have shown though, that minorites are less likely to get called back for a job.

Chen, Julie. Personal interview. N.d. The interview begins to introduce Chen as being an anchor on the talk show "The Talk" and also part of the show "The Big Brother". Ohio explains that Chen was unexpected into the media when she first started, because of the way she looked. Chen is Chinese and therefore isnt able to fit the standards of an anchor, because of the shape of her eyes. The criticism pushed Chen to get a nose job.

Dennis, Phillip. "College Teaching." 2005. ANTHROPOLOGY 1301: UNDERSTANDING MULTICULTURAL AMERICA. Vol. 53. N.p.: n.p., n.d. 65. elibrary. Web. 6 Sept. 2013. Many minorities work jobs with low wages and find themselves torn between working for their family, or being with their family. Moving up in these companies and factories is not an opinion for these workers, because of their nationality. The workers may have the skill, but are not given the opportunity to due to race, language barriers and where they come from.

Dewey, Charlsie. "Creating an Anti-Racism Environment in the Workplace." Grand Rapids Business Journal: n. pag. elibrary. Web. 15 Sept. 2013. Dewey acknowledges the fact that discrimination and racism is still alive, but he wants to create a way to stop it. A non-profit organization has kicked off informing others about policies and procedures to keep the workplace discrimination and racism free.

Does Ethnic Concentration Influence Employees' Access to Authority? An Examination of Contemporary Urban Labor Markets. elibrary. Web. 15 Sept. 2013. Smith states that race and ethnicity has a lot to do with the companies and businesses people work in. He claims that the authority in a company will change due to the race of the workers and the authorities. Smith's hypothesis will support the claim that an African American authorizer will have a better control over African American workers.
