Introduction:
This is the first semester of three years (six semesters) of Indonesian instruction. Students
will have an introduction to the archipelago and the Indonesian people and their cultures
through a series of films about Indonesia. This brief introduction will lead to a more
exciting exploration to the culture through the language learning. The communicative
approach to the language, combined with the simple structures, will help students be
conversant in the first few weeks of the semester.

Course objectives:
At the end of this course, students will be able to:
1. Listen to and speak basic situational Indonesian.
2. Read and write in basic formal Indonesian.
3. Identify the major islands on the archipelago, list the ethnic groups who inhabit the
areas, and talk about specifics of at least one of the islands.
4. Describe the custom learned in order to speak Indonesian like the native speakers.

Texts:
Utomo, Fietkiewicz & Wolff, Beginning Indonesian Through Self-Instruction
(Cornell University Southeast Asia Program, 1992).
Echols & Shadily, An English Indonesian Dictionary (Cornell University Press,
1975).
Echols & Shadily, An Indonesian English Dictionary (Cornell University Press,
1989).

Course evaluation:
Homework (12.5%): will be graded according to the scale of 1 to 100, based on
spellings, organization of ideas, vocabulary, and grammar. Students may choose to
resubmit the homework after it is graded. The maximum grade for the resubmission is 99.
The emphasis is on your writing ability. Your writing should be at least one page,
double space. Homework deadlines:
- First draft is due by 9 AM every Monday in class. If you submit it during the week after
the deadline, your grade will be reduced up to 25% (5% off for each day after the
deadline).
- Revised draft is due by 9 AM the following Monday in class. I do not accept
homework on email.
Please safe the homework with your name on it (for example: Dewi_PR1.doc)
and always include the following heading in your homework:
1
PR Nomer/Judul:
Nama:
Tanggal:
And if you resubmit your homework, please include this after the title (Pembetulan).

Class participation (12.50%): Class participation is significant. The instructor will

facilitate conversation and you are expected to actively participate in the interaction.
Students who miss these activities cannot reasonably make them up. As a result, those
who do not participate regularly should expect to receive lower grades in the course.
Students who miss more than the equivalent of two weeks of class should consider
withdrawing and taking the class in the future semester.

Cultural activities (10%): There is a cultural component in this class, which students
should include in their assignments. The cultural component should include (but not
limited to) Indonesian people, food, music, dance, temples, and costumes, etc. The
following cultural get-togethers are part of the cultural component. Students will earn
points toward the overall grade.
There will be monthly Indonesian Potluck for students and other community
members, so that students will be familiar with Indonesian dishes and meet with other
Indonesian speakers and/or people who are interested in Indonesia. Students will get
additional points to help organize this event.

Film assignment

You will be required to see the “Ring of Fire” series. There are 5 (five) DVDs on these
series at the multimedia library at Anderson Language Technology Center (=ALTEC).
Check ALTEC schedule at http://altec.colorado.edu/.

Please show your student ID at the reception desk to check out the film, and view the film
in the lab. If you wish, you could watch it together with your friends. You will have to
make a reservation if you want to watch the film in a group. Make sure you take notes
while you watch it, because you will fill out a response form about the film and submit it
the following Monday in class. The response will be in English. The form for the
response will be posted on the class blog.

You might want to take notes on the particular aspect of the film that interests you most.
These notes will help you decide what aspect of the islands you want to focus on in your
final project later.

If the person at the reception desk tells you that the film is not there, ask to speak with the
supervisor. The film belongs to ALTEC library. Someone should be able to get it for you
because it is there.

Here is the schedule for the films:

Week 2: Aug 31 - Sept 4 Spice Island Saga

Week 3: Sept 8 - 11 Dance of the Warriors
Week 4: Sept 14 - 18 Dream of the Wanderers of Borneo
Week 5: Sept 21 - 25 East of Krakatoa
Week 6: Sept 28 - Oct 2 Beyond Ring of Fire
