Woodworking
Shelf Clock: Beginners
Learn how to use power and hand tools in a safe manner while making a clock (approx. 13‖h
x8‖w x 4‖d) out of oak or other available woods with a quartz pendulum movement. Here’s a
great class to get hands-on beginner instruction on the woodworking equipment at the Tho-
mas Jefferson Art Studios! After this class, you will be able to use the woodshop during Open

All-Purpose Card Table
Intermediate to advanced students with a foundation in beginning woodworking will machine
and assemble a folding circular card table using rough sawn lumber. A familiarity with using a
table saw, jointer, planer and stationary sander is required. The project will also require stu-
dents to make hand-made mortise and tenon joints and machine-made dovetail joints. This
class will also cover the application of veneer to a curved surface. Thomas Jefferson Center.

Fundamentals of Drawing
Beginners and anyone who wants to practice drawing will develop strong drawing skills using
pencil, charcoal, ink and pastels. Students will draw from life and the instructor will provide

Ceramics
Handbuilding (beginners to advanced)
This class is for those that don’t like throwing on the wheel but love handbuilding with clay.
Instruction in sculptural and functional techniques: pinch, coil and slab construction. Surface
decoration and glazing will also be covered. Individual guidance will be given for all levels.
Experienced students can pursue independent projects with guidance. No outside clay or
glazes are permitted. Walter Reed Center.

Throwing on the Wheel
Discover the joy of creating functional clay vessels such as mugs, bowls and vases. Begin-
ners are introduced to basic wheel techniques such as wedging, centering and throwing. Sur-
face decoration, glazing and trimming are skills covered as well. Repeat students are wel-
come. Students should bring a towel, notebook and $11 to purchase tools at the first ses-
sion. Open studio time at TJ Art Studios is included and can be used through the duration of
the class (9 sessions).

The best of both worlds! This class is great for every level. Beginners will learn fundamentals
and advanced students will refresh what they already know about how to throw on a potters
wheel and techniques in handbuilt ceramics. Enjoy wedging, centering and making bowls
and cylinders. Coil and slab construction is covered as well as glaze applications and surface

Open studio sessions at TJ Art Studios for experienced jewelers! Designed for individuals to
work independently in a creative and safe environment who have previous experience and
basic skills in equipment for Silversmithing (flex shaft, rolling mills, polishing machine, and
acetylene torches), Casting (flasks, investment and hot wax injection) and hand tools. Only
equipment is supplied and no instruction is provided during these sessions. Available only as

Silversmithing
Learn the fundamentals of silversmithing to make your own jewelry! Techniques introduced
include sawing, piercing, soldering, surface embellishment, cold joining and polishing. No
experience required. All tools and expendable supplies (except silver) are provided. Students
may purchase silver at class. Costs are approximately $30 for wire and sheet. Returning stu-
dents are encouraged to register to learn new techniques and projects. Thomas Jefferson

In this workshop various soldering techniques are reviewed and demonstrated. The impor-
tance of which temp solder to use when as well as the various types of solder joints used in
jewelry making (butt, sweat and chip). This class is mostly a lecture and demo. Some hands

Finishing a piece of jewelry is essential to having it look ―done‖. This workshop covers what it
takes to get your piece off your bench and onto YOU . Various surface techniques such as
sanding, high polish, oxidation and various matte finishes will be covered. Students should
