1his Second Sunday o Adent we make the words o the gospel our common ocation:

1here are many ways that we might make straight the path o the Lord, but two ery important ways are stressed in
today`s readings:
working or JUS1ICL and being a catalyst or lARMON\.

A long time ago, Pope Paul VI proclaimed, I you want peace, work or justice.` It only makes sense. \e know
that justice happens and justice exists when each receies his or her due, when there is equality and air treatment,
and when basic human rights are respected. As there is a ery serious and proen global imbalance in the
distribution o resources and goods, is it such a wonder that there is not world peace \hen people stricken with
enduring hunger and poerty a world away are none the less allowed to see the lies o the rich and amous almost
launted in their aces on beaten up teleisions atop a pile o rubble-no wonder the hate, no wonder the lashing out.

Jesus IS the reason or the season` and amidst all o the ubiquitous bad news we must ind hope in God`s Good
News, as the psalmist proclaims, KI6F:;? 6<=AA MAGI8:6< :H <:6 F:O? =H> MIAAH?66 GM P?=;? MG8?W?89 In lIS
time` may be understood as any time that we are doing justice in lis name and also as the day o perect justice
when we will see God in God`s heaen-this, then, is our inspiration and our motiation to make straight his
paths.` But do we beliee it Remember how 1homas once protested: low can you say we know the way` \e
do NO1 know the way or where you are going!` 1o which Jesus responds: \ou DO know the way, 1homas. I
am the way, the truth, and the lie!`

It would be ery easy to dismiss our common ocation to prepare the way o the Lord, just because we hae heard
it to the point o ho, hum`-probably ollowed by a yawn. ,Seems like we`e heard that gospel a million times.,
But, there it is. \e need to spend Adent` in a way that allows us to experience Jesus as the way that can lead to
woles lying down with lambs,` the truth o ourseles and o a world that can set us ree rom the prisons we
ourseles create, and the lie that consoles us in the knowledge o lie eerlasting.
