IEP Goal/Objective: No student IEPs in this classroom. Accommodations/ Differentiation Students are allowed to use their China booklet to use the shape of China as a hint at finding it on the map.

Assessment (based on objectives): There will be an exit slip that requires each student to color in China on a map of Asia.

Materials: 4 small blow-up globes 1 copy of the World Map sheet Source: Teachers Friend Publication 18 copies of China Map worksheet (one for teacher Elmo use) Source: enchantedlearning.com 18 pieces of construction paper (one for teacher Elmo use) 18 pairs of scissors 18 glue sticks Crayons/colored pencils 18 Contribution of China charts (pre-cut out) 17 exit slips of the map of Asia 17 copies of The People of China worksheet (homework) Source: given to by CT

Cut out the Contribution of China charts to save some time on the booklet making process.

Integration of technology: I will be displaying a map of the world on the Elmo projector. Then, when we are creating our booklets, I will be using the Elmo so that the students can see what Im doing as we make our booklets together.

Alternative Plan: If the Elmo does not work, I will use the large world map available in the classroom. For its second use, I will merely write Ancient China on the board so that they know how to spell it and display my progress as we color the country. Accommodations/ Differentiation Time Planned

Anticipatory Set (Hook & Agenda): Have a small blow-up globe sitting on one students desk at each group. Tell the students to stand up at their desks and to push in their chairs. Were going to have a review game of what we learned yesterday and ask some new questions about what we are going to start learning about today. Tell the student who has the ball on their desk to pick it up and throw it to the person across from them lightly. The person who has the ball has to answer the question. If you do not have the ball, but know the answer, put both of your hands on your head, but stay quiet. If the person with the ball absolutely does not know the answer, they may then pass it to a person with their hands on their heads. If that happens, though, the person who answers the question correctly has to throw it back to the original person who did not know the answer so that they have a chance to answer the next question. Does everyone understand? (see Access/Review Prior Knowledge below) Access/Review Prior Knowledge: 1. The person with the ball has to answer this question: What is the definition of ancient? 2. Now pass the ball to someone else in your group: What is a contribution? 3. Next students question: give an example of a contribution. 4. The next question involves a topic that we covered in a previous unit. Where on this globe is the continent of Asia located? 5. Pass the ball to either the last person in the group or the first person that went: Where is China located on the continent of Asia? Once you have found it, show it to all of the people in your group. Collect the blow-up globes and tell students to get back in their seats.

See below.

1 min.

Be sure to tell the students to say the persons name before they pass the ball to them so that they can prepare themselves; Use this time to patrol the groups and ensure that everyone is answering a questions in each group

Teaching Process & Modeling (Content is presented, accessed, or built): 1. The reason you were asked to locate China on your globes is because that is the first ancient civilization we are going to be learning about. A civilization is a society that existed in a certain time and place (write this on the board). Ancient China existed over 2,500 years ago, which is a very long time! Even though it existed so long ago, a lot of what the Chinese people created is still used today. We are going to be learning about these specific inventions and contributions in the coming days. 2. To start off the lesson, we are first going to look at the geography of China. Put The World sheet on Elmo display. Here is another look at the world map. All of this land here is Asia (color it in green). So, if we were to zoom in on Asia to look at things a little closer, this is what it would look like. Color China in red. China takes up all of this land in red. Even though China still exists in this spot today, we are going to be talking about China as it was all of those years ago and what life was like then.

Make sure the images are large enough for the students in the back to see.

Guided Practice & Checking for Understanding: 3. Now, Im going to give each of you a worksheet about China and we are going to spend some time coloring it together. Pass out the maps and instruct them to get out their crayons or colored pencils. Also, they will need their scissors and glue soon. Display this sheet on the Elmo. Ask a student to read the information at the top. Read the coloring directions. Explain that this map is going to go on the front of our Ancient China booklets, so be neat. Guide them through each step. Answer questions located on the bottom at the end. 4. Pass out the pieces of construction paper. Tell them to fold it hamburger style, displaying it on the Elmo and holding it up for them to see. Have them glue the China map onto the front of the booklet, with the spine on the top. Have them write their name on the back of the booklet with By: preceding it. 5. Next, pass out the Contributions of China chart (already cut out). Have them glue that on the inside of their booklet. Students hold onto the booklets.

25 mins

Closure: This is the booklet we will be using throughout this unit. We will fill in the contributions chart, so that we can keep track of all of the important information we learn about Ancient China. It is important to remember that we are learning about China as it was many years ago, not how it is today. Give each student an exit slip to complete. They must color in China on a map of Asia. These will be glued onto the inside cover of their booklets tomorrow during morning time. Homework: The People of China worksheet is to be completed for homework with a parent. Read through the two paragraphs about the Chinese people, then answer the questions below. Declarative Statement Summary: Today we learned that Ancient China was a civilization that existed many years ago and contributed a lot to the society we live in today. We learned where it is located on a map of Asia, as well as where the Pacific Ocean is compared to it and where the Great Wall is located. We will use the booklets we made today over the next three days to use as a study tool for our end of the unit test.

Students are allowed to leave their booklets on their desks to see the shape of China as a hint.
