Assignment # 01 Semester: Fall 2013 Due Date: 11.12.

2013 Problem # 01:

EE/PE 562: Integration of Alternate Energy Resources

Draw the electric equivalent circuit of Induction Generator used in the wind turbine integration running at speed , slip S and prove that the torque generated in induction machine is a function of stator flux and rotor current and is given by
Tmech = 3P m I ' r

Where, P= no. of poles I ' r = Rotor Current Referred to stator side R ' r = Rotor Resistance Referred to Stator Side

m = stator generated flux

Problem # 02: A fraction of power extracted from wind turbine with cut in speed V1 and cut out speed V2 with power
v coefficient C p = 4 1 v2 v1 1 .Find the optimal ratio for cut in and cut out speed that gives maximum v2
2

power coefficient according to Betz Limit.

Problem # 03: Suppose the wind probability density function is just a constant over the 5 to 20 m/s range of wind speeds, as shown below. The power curve for a small 1 kW windmill is also shown

a. What is the probability that the wind is blowing between 5 and 15 m/s? b. What is the annual energy that the wind turbine would generate? c. What is the average power in the wind?

Problem # 04:

For Rayleigh winds with an average wind speed of 8 m/s, a 31-m, 340-kW turbine follows the idealized power curve shown in Figure. How many kWh/yr will it deliver when winds blow between its rated wind speed of 13 m/s and its furling wind speed of 25 m/s?

Problem # 05 A horizontal-axis wind turbine with rotor 20 meters in diameter is 30-% efficient in 10 m/s winds at 1 atmosphere of pressure and 15C. a. How much power would it produce in those winds? b. Estimate the air density on a 2500-m mountaintop at 10C. b. Estimate the power the turbine would produce on that mountain with the same wind speed assuming its efficiency is not affected by air density.
