Self i-worship/ exalt myself Transition: We are made to worship, everyone of us aware or not, religious or not, first time or not. Inside of us has longing to worship something or someone and if we dont have God as an object of our worship, youll find another thing/someone to worship Deep inside, were looking for someone/ something to worship. If not God there will be something/ someone to worship We were all made to worship. God created us to worship. Reason why in 10 Commandments 1. You shall have no other gods before me walang extra dios 2. Do not create idols. The first two commandment is really about worship. Exodus 20 God created us to worship Him and Him alone Tension: If I created to worship, then is there any acceptable worship to God? Is there any true worship that I can offer to Him ? And if there is, what would it be? Welcome to our new series: Beyond Sunday because we believe that worship is beyond Sunday, beyond church gathering, and worship is a lifestyle Word: John 4: 21-24 Woman, Jesus replied, believe me, a time is coming when you will worship the Father neither on this mountain nor in Jerusalem. 22 You Samaritans worship what you do not know; we worship what we do know, for salvation is from the Jews. 23 Yet a time is coming and has now come when the true worshipers will worship the Father in the Spirit and in truth, for they are kind of worshipers the Father seeks. 24 God is spirit, and his worshipers must worship in the Spirit and in truth. Background: Jesus Christ is talking to Samaritan and their conversation boils down to worship. Samaritan- Jew and Gentile. Israelites very strict in worship and if you are not fullblooded Jew, you would not be allowed to enter a synagogue to worship. And the Samaritans

hated the Jews because they were being rejected and exiled, so they went to a mountain, called Mt. Gerezene, and they founded, put an altar and there it became their worship place. Centuries after, conversation of a Jew and a Samaritan, iba ang worship place nila and they talk about worship. Woman said we are worshipping here and you Jew, youre saying that worship is in Jerusalem. They were talking about worship and thats time when Jesus mentioned the term true worshippers Theres a lot of worship in the bible, but this is the only time when Jesus said true worshipers implies that there is true worship these are the worshippers who worship God in a way thats acceptable to Him. And another implication theres false worship. The question is, in our worship with God, is it true worship or false worship? I would hate at the end of my life, every Sunday going to church, thinking in my mind I was worshipping God and at the end of my life and faces God and looks at me and say, Joseph, Sunday every Sunday, for 70 years, you thought youre worshipping me, but your worship was false. I pray and hope that well learn what true worship is all about.

And if we are going to look at false worship there are two reasons we can fall on to it 1. When we are sincerely wrong mindset: ang worship basta sincere ka ok lang, Samaritan, she was so sincere, but Jesus said, there is such a thing as true worship its not just about sincerity of heart. If you are sincere, you can be sincerely wrong Illustration: Who among you like the subject MATH? Dont like to talk about it, heart about it? In Math, you need solution and answer, its a problem solving. Minsan mali answer mo, but tama process still wrong. How many of you solve math problem, and youre sincerely thinking that youre right. Alam ko tama to, bakit minalian mo teacher, sincere ako dito, and if youre wrong, youre wrong. It doesnt matter how sincere you are. Same with False worship, its not about being sincere in worship 2. When our worship is not complete. Incomplete solution, incomplete answer its wrong. People think that as they just go to church, theyve already worship God So what is true worship? Jesus said, John 4: 23 Yet a time is coming and has now come when the true worshipers will worship the Father in the Spirit and in truth, for they are kind of worshipers the Father seeks. 24 God is spirit, and his worshipers must worship in the Spirit and in truth. 1. Worship in Spirit. What do we mean by Spirit? Spirit doesnt mean Holy Spirit, it means inner life, emotion and will, it talks about our heart True worship is when you worship God with all your heart. It means to connect with God in every especial way.

You can go to church, yet not connect with God Ive been through that attend to church but not connected to God. Example: when you go out together with your friends, but not connected to each other, texting, or playing solo, watch movie cinema, pagpasok hindi kayo naguusap, and paglabas, bye2x We can go to the motion and yet not connected with God. Same way with God, you can go to church, you can lift your hand, jump, clap, shout and sing, yet not able to connect with God, then we are not worshipping. Worshiping in spirit means in heart Jesus rebuking the Pharisees Matthew 15:8-9 These people honor me with their lips, but their hearts are far from me. 9 They worship me in vain; their teachings are merely human rules. You can sing a worship song to God but not connected to Him, your mind and heart is far away Kumakanta-kanta ka, I worship you, O ang ganda niya ah, anu kaya kakainin ko mamaya?, thinking of the small group You honor me with your lips but your heart is far from me. He doesnt want our lip service, songs, He wants our hearts. Are we having a genuine connection with God or just going to the motions? 2. Worship in truth Jesus said, John 4: 23 Yet a time is coming and has now come when the true worshipers will worship the Father in the Spirit and in truth, for they are kind of worshipers the Father seeks. 24 God is spirit, and his worshipers must worship in the Spirit and in truth. How many of you want to seek God? The bible is telling us to seek God with all our heart. But theres another angle of seeking, the bible tells us that God seeks true worshipers, God is seeking us, God is seeking for people He could be with. What do we mean by seeking? Seeking is not just to search, seeking is to demand something from someone, bigay mo sakin yan or else God is demanding worship from us. People: bakit mo naman idedemand yan God, alam mo naman down ako ngayon, busy ako ngayon, or i dont feel worshipping, alam mo naman Lord ang nangyari sa kin? Why he demand worship from us? Because He is God and he is worthy to be worshipped no matter how you feel, what you feel, what you think, what happen in your life, He is worthy of worship. Worship in truth means He is the true God and he deserve to be worshipped. A lot of Christians missed that part, when they ask you, kumusta service, nakakabless ba? How many of you have been blessed with our worship team? I love it, Im blessed, if you are blessed then praise God. But if youre not blessed, it doesnt matter because true worship is not about are you blessed? But true worship is about is God blessed? Is God blessed with my

worship? Whenever you go to church, is it because you are consumer/ wanting to get some or are we going there saying Lord you are worthy of my worship no matter how big my problems are, you are bigger than my problems. You are worthy of my heart David wrote Psalms when he was down, Psalm 103: 1-2 Praise the Lord, my soul; all in my inmost being, praise his holy name 2 Praise the Lord, my soul, and forget not all his benefits He commanded his soul to worship God because He is the true God and will give what he deserves. David understand that praise the Lord, my soul we have no choice but to worship because He deserves Its not worshipping a man, song, form, and religion. There are many gods we c an serve today; we can bow down to them. But lets worship the true God from the heart. As we look at the issue of worship, its the issue of heart. Greatest commandment: Matthew 22: 37 Jesus replied: Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with a ll your soul and with all your mind Its not just about what you do, its about your heart Samuel, when he was looking for the next king of Israel, hes looking to externals. God has to stop Samuel and say to him, Samuel youre looking at external but I look at the heart. Every time you worship God, not just in this room, God doesnt looking at your actions, words. Hes looking at your heart. Are you worshipping Him with all your heart? He created us to worship, but our hearts were polluted because of sin Jeremiah 17: 9 the heart is deceitful above all things and beyond cure. Who can understand it? What happened was our heart ended to worship things/ someone we adore, other than one true God. God wants us to be back to Him and he provided a solution Ezekiel 36: 26-27 I will give you a new heart and put a new spirit in you; I will remove from your heart of stone and give you a heart of flesh. 27 and I will put my Spirit in you and move you to follow my decrees and be careful to keep my laws. God gives us a new heart, heart that is soft, tender heart. A heart that when you go here and God touches you, heart that is responsive to Him because He always wants to connect with us. The question is will you have the new heart and say Lord I want to connect with you and worship you?
