Hackney Rhetoric 101 15 November 2013 Six Years of High School In recent discussions of high school lasting six years, a debatable issue has been whether or not six years of high school is good for students nationwide. On one hand, Madison Maxey, fashion entrepreneur and Jeffrey Jensen Arnett, author, "Emerging Adulthood believe that at 18 years of age students are ready for the next chapter in their life and should be able to follow their dreams. However, on the other side Leon Botstein, president, Bard College and Thomas Bailey, Teachers College, Columbia University believe that the education system now is failing and change should be done to better of students with jobs and find a way to take chances and change the way that students learn from Jr. high to high school learn all together. My view is that having six years of high school and still being able to get a college degree can help students be able to afford college. Though I grasp the fact that at 18 years old students are ready to move on, I still believe that in some cases being able to go to high school and being able to get a college degree can benefit students by helping them be successful when it comes to getting a job and finishing out college. I say that all schools should come to a decision to adopt to a new way of learning. P-Tech located in Brooklyn was one of the first schools to change how many years students would go High school. P-Tech high school lasts 6 years instead of 4 years, and students receive their

two year college degree at the end of their 6 years within being in that high school. President Obamas praise the six-year high school in Brooklyn, known as P-Tech, is welcome, because our nation sorely needs educational innovation. Obama thought the idea of having 6 years of high school to better students in college was cool, and he also said that "We need to give every
American student opportunities like this." The reason for P-Tech high school being 6 years in is so

that students can be able to adopt to college better and by being in high school while going to college the students dont have to pay college tuition. Some believe that schools should take that time into think of new ways high school students should learn. Bailey explains that Dual enrollment and early college high schools, where high school students take college courses, have been shown to increase high school graduation and college success. Collaboration between high schools and colleges can also improve curriculum alignment (the Common Core may provide a framework for that), and better counseling strengthens the selection and transition to college. It has been a proven fact that being able to take college courses in schools has help student by either finishing out college or it has helped them transition in going to the college of their choice. Botstein believes that No doubt P-Tech is an improvement on the largely dysfunctional character of most urban high schools. But to lift the educational level of students of high school age, we must change much more. Botstein thinks that more change is needed in the educational system than high school being longer. He explains that high school should start in the 7th grade and more college should be taught in high school to better of students in life. Although there are various reasons on what way high school should be for students by either keeping them in school longer or, how at 18 years of age theyre ready to be off on their own. I believe that by having high school students stay in school for six years while still being able to get a college degree can want to get further in education. By them being able to take the college courses while theyre in school is a great way for them not having to pay so much money when it comes to transferring to a university. P-tech is making college more available for the students that dont have enough money to pay for college. However, having students to start early in college and high school is a great way for them to be more successful because theyre

obtaining more knowledge that can help them when they are ready for college and prepare them for their career that theyre getting ready pursue. Others might say that at 18 years old students are ready for a new chapter in their life.
Maxey believes that Our approach to school is no longer functional. In this knowledge-based

economy, we need to help students become self-driven and independent, Maxey believes that at 18 years old students should be more independent and self-driven so that they can learn responsibility and begin to learn what hard work is. Arnett explains how students should be taught about what to do in their future to get ready for the economy. They have a strong sense of being ready to move on to a new life stage in which they will have more independence and freedom to make their own decisions, this means that young adults are ready for freedom and independence by the time they turn 18. In sum, students should be able to be more independent and ready for life at the age of 18, but I say P-tech are helping students become successful by giving them a college education for free and, even though students are ready to move on, I believe by students staying in school for 6 years arent going to affect them being successful and more independent. Its going to help them want to stay and
