Chatham Area Rapid Transit Services (CARTS)

Understanding the need for a walkable, healthy, and sustainable city, the area surrounding Truman parkway provided a great opportunity for a linear park for the community. This proposal not only connect many major services and commercial center, but also ties the whole city parks together. From Lake mayer in Bacon Park, to Daffin Park, and all the way River Street at the end, this proposal unifies the whole park system of the city. The area provides more opportunity that restrictions. Bus Rapid Transit has been added to the system not only to provide locals with a dignified public transportation, but also activate the silent spaces of the park. While the Park connects most of the city together, this Rapid Transit system connect south side to downtown and ultimately to major cities like Macon and Atlanta through Grey Hound buses. This proposal sis about creating a city that has successfully balanced the desire of its capable with the needs of its most vulnerable citizen. Savannah Hilton Head International Airport

The Adams family represents the families living in the islands and neighborhoods surrounding Downtown. They drive to their nearest station, and park their car. They get on the bikes and enjoy the trail promoting healthy lifestyle to their children. It is comforting to know that a restaurant, rest area, and other conveniences are just around the corner. They come to the trail regularly to do exercise.

Mr. and Mrs. John represent the Professionals who have to work either downtown or around the air port. They Drive to the nearest CARTS station, park their vehicle, and ride it to their destination, Golfstream and or the airport(the line between Greyhound bus station and air port is in city planning) avoiding all the traffic. Their commute is much easier and hustle free since they dont have to face traffic. Mr. John can even take a nap while on his way to work/home.

More tax dollars for the city, and jobs for its residents as a result of: Zones of undeveloped land that will have a boost in their land value. Zoning these areas accordingly will generate a great amount of income for the park and the city. Families Visiting for Special Events: Smith Family lives in George Town. Their goal is to attend the Savannah St. Patricks Day Parade and have some fun with friends and family. They drive from George town to Bacon Park complex. They park their car in one of the facilities, and ride the CARTS to go to Downtown. With no worries for Parking and hustle of getting out in time, they attend the parade and come back using happy and without any delay.

Most Cities like Savannah are laid out and planned to be a walkable city. But overtime this sense of scale changes and cities are challenged with issues arising from that change. City of Savannah has not unscathed this issue, The original plan of General Oglethorpe was centered on human being and its capabilities. As the city grew and technology brought mass movers and ultimately the individual transport, the scale changed from human scale to a more industrial scale. While this scale is more convenient and is a commendable and impressive form of transportation, it is not the most efficient and available. Through mapping Savannah, It has been identified that in order for the city to move towards a better, efficient, and more sustainable future, it need to create a balance between human and industrial scale. The city must provide truly public spaces that are geared toward the general population and serves everyone, not just the one with economic, or social capabilities.

different parks . This project is also important as it connects the city of Savannah from River Street all the way to Lake Mayer through one high speed service.

Right: The design for the Truman Rapid Transit and Health trail of the Chatham Area Rapid Transit Services is depicted here. With a better public transport system comes improvements in activity level and health of the immediate neighborhoods. These circular zones indicate the radius at which residents, tourists, and citizens can walk and or bike to the closest CARTS Station. The blue circle has a one mile radius. While being walkable, it is considered to be a unit to represent the bikability distance. The larger green circle has a radius of half miles. This is a very easily walkable distance. This distance can be walked fast and is considered, by the designer, to be convenient distance for walking. The third and smaller green circle indicates a quarter mile radius. It is there to identity the walk-ability of the area for parents with children, elderly and demographic that can or dont prefer to walk to far. Below: the drawings indicate the interaction of TRTHT with existing intersections. In order to reduce cost and keep, the system intends to use as much of the existing infrastructure as it can. The example bellow is an idea on how this can be achieved.

Park, Ride, and Bike Pass (Full Access) This pass is more suitable for permenant residents of the city. for different durations, they ger the best deal there is. Ride and Bike Pass (Limited access) This pass is more suitable for temporary residents like student. It is a limited service pass. and additional service can be added to it. Tourist Pass (One Day) This pass is more suitable for tourists and one time users of the service. the are regularly expensive as they require the most equipment and service.

The focus of the Truman Linear Park and RBT Plan is to create a hallway like connection from the South Side to downtown that allows for more thatn a direct communte. It is important to celebrate what is being passed and the community in between dowtown and ones home. This plan grants that allowing for growth economically by small business around the park and increasing healthy and safe pedestrian trafc. What is more this new plan is projected to increase Savannahs walkability by nearly double. Not only does the park make Savannahs citizens healthy but the city itself by reducing automotive travel and congestion, increasing bike use with permeabel paving. The park bestows upon the city more foilage . At the Henry and Anderson hub a great deal can happen. Not only can a person park their car catch the CAT or get on the new RBT they can access the bike share or enjoy the park and small rentable stands that this once empty lot wil provide.

The plan for the Linear Park, Bike share, RBT, and autmotive routes to align creates a path of travel everyone will follow. Yet it will be safe, shaded and sound sheilded so that it is comfortable for all.
