There are three predominant communication modalities - Visual, Auditory, Kinesthetic (VAK) !ome thin" #est in pictures (visual), some in sounds (auditory), and some process thoughts through our #odies ("inaesthetic). $% course, we all switch %rom mode to mode& #ut most o% us pre%er one mode o% processing over others. The same applies to teaching and learning. 'or e(ample, people in "inaesthetic mode may not understand an e(planation that paints a picture. -eople in auditory mode may appear to #e staring out o% the window all through your lesson, when what they are actually doing is paying you the courtesy o% turning their #est ear towards you. -eople who loo" up in the air when you as" them a ,uestion are searching %or a picture in their minds eye. -eople who loo" down towards the hand they write with are chec"ing out new in%ormation with their %eelings. -eople who %idget in class are .ust trying to get the in%ormation into their muscles. Visual people thin" very %ast - they need to "eep up with their pictures& Auditories are slower at giving a response. Auditory people might well remem#er phone num#ers #y hearing the tones, and might thin" o% themselves on a #each #y hearing sounds o% the sea. They tend to loo" to the side or down to thin".
