The operator picks up a 9-1-1 call and says: 9-1-1, what is your emergency? The Operator confirms the callers location. 95% of 9-1-1 call centers have enhanced 9-1-1 capabilities to help pinpoint the location of wireless callers The Operator asks when the emergency occurred, if there are any hazards at the scene, and the identity of those involved. The Operator pays close attention to the tone and word choices of the caller and to background noise. These help assess the nature of the emergency The Operator keeps the caller on the line while alerting the police, medical assistance or fire department. If necessary, The Operator will offer instructions for handling the emergency until help arrives. Operators are trained in emergency baby delivery, wound care, avoiding intruders and much more.

For example, in the movie The Call, a 9-1-1 operator instructed a kidnapped girl locked in a trunk to kick out the taillight and wave her arm to draw the attention of passing vehicles.

DECIDE IF ITS AN EMERGENCY An emergency is any situation in which you feel you or others need immediate assistance. These include fires, crimes in progress, and urgent medical problems.

///////////////////////////////

KNOW YOUR LOCATION If youre calling from a wireless phone, look around for road signs and landmarks. GPS information may be transmitted, but this is not universal. For example, in The Call, the victim has a TracFone, a prepaid phone that cant transmit GPS coordinates.

STAY CALM Trust the operator to handle your emergency. For example, in The Call, the victim follows instructions despite her panic, helping police in their search. She pours paint out the taillight hole so the police can follow the car, recalls the color of the vehicle, and gives a description of her kidnapper.

DONT HANG UP THE PHONE The operator is trained to get important information from you quickly, so stay on the line and answer every question as clearly as you can.

TEACH CHILDREN TO CALL 9-1-1 The beauty of the system is in its simplicity. Children can save lives too!

NEVER PRANK CALL 9-1-1 Prank calls to 9-1-1 waste operators valuable time and are illegal in most states.
