University Grants Commission (UGC) The process of gaining and imparting education has been a tradition of this soil India. Traces of Indian participation in the academic field can be found very early in the development process of human civilization; no wonder the invention of number system is attributed to Indians along with their Arab counterparts. In fact even during the time of enslavement Indians did not forsake this legacy. That is the reason the universities of Calcutta, Bombay (now Mumbai) and Madras were set up in 1857, followed by the University of Allahabad in 1887. As the number of Universities in India exploded especially after its independence there was felt a need for inter-university synchronization across India. To meet this end an Association of Indian Universities was founded in 1925 (earliest known as Inter-University Board). The boards primary purpose was to share information in the field of education, culture, sports etc. It appears that the Association of Indian Universities eventually evolved into what we know as the UGC in November 1956. However unlike its predecessor the UGC has very finely defined spectrum and consequently it explicitly addresses the needs Indian Universities! Therefore if it was to be enquired as to what exactly is a UGC then it is a statutory body of the Government of India through an Act of Parliament for the coordination, determination and maintenance of standards of university education in India.
