Summary of the Lesson Plan: To write an explanatory paragraph including facts, examples, and details. This lesson uses the Trophies story, "Why Mosquitos Buzz in People's Ears," and will take about an hour. Student Population: Grade Level: 3rd grade

Skill Level: on level Groupings: Whole group (direct instruction and closure), Independent (practice and assessment) Materials: Trophies Book T ED 3-2 : Why Mosquitos buzz in people's ear Paper Pencil Objectives: Common Core State Standard W.3.2 Write informative/explanatory texts to examine a topic and convey ideas and information clearly. Learning Targets Knowledge Targets: Students must know explanatory text structures (e.g., description or definition with causes, motives, or reasons). Reasoning Targets:Students must determine the organizational structure that is appropriate for the topic and purpose. Product Targets: Students must compose explanatory texts that clearly convey ideas and information about a chosen topic. Vocabulary satisfied duty council mischief nonsense tidbit

Student-Friendly Learning Targets Student Knowledge Targets: I know explanatory text structures. Student Product Targets: I can compose explanatory texts that clearly convey ideas and information about a chosen topic. Procedure: Prior to reading "Why Mosquitos Buzz in People's Ears", students will become familiar with the vocabulary words by reading and discussing as a group. Students will read "Why Mosquitos Buzz in People's Ears" in small groups

Students will need a piece of paper and a pencil. Students will write a paragraph on what type of insect bothers them the most and write why it bugs them.

Closure: Students will share with the class their insect of choice and one reason why the insect is not liked. Assessment: Assessment Tool The paragraph written about the writing prompt needs to display understanding of reasoning. What Is Being Assessed? The student is being assessed on following directions, providing facts, giving examples, and including details in the paragraph.

Reflection& Thoughts: Which part of the lesson do you think will be the easiest to teach? The easiest portion to teach will be discussing the insects that bothers each student the most. Which part of the lesson do you think will be the most challenging to teach? It may be challenging for students to provide facts around the insect. What lesson or concept should be taught prior to this lesson? Students will need to be taught what informative/explanatory text is, prior to being expected to write. How will you follow up or extend this lesson? This lesson could be extended by taking students outside on an insect hunt to observe the insects that bug them the most in their natural habitat. What will you do for students who dont grasp the concepts? I will pair up students who do and do not grasp the concept to work together and write a paragraph. Which part of the lesson, if any, do you think might need to change? We may need to have a group disucssion on insects first to get ideas flowing. When you were writing this lesson plan, what was the most difficult part? The most difficult portion of this lesson plan was narrowing down to one activity.
