1. (a) What are the various factors that affect the heat affect zone? Explain them
fully.
(b) Explain the principle and procedure involved in gas welding process. [8+8]
2. (a) What are the causes for stress buildup in welded Joints? Suggest suitable
remedies.
(b) Discuss pre and post weld treatments.
(c) Explain in which situations the eye protection equipments goggles, shields and
helmets are employed. [5+6+5]
3. (a) Explain the following:
i. Deep penetration coated electrode
ii. Non-consumable electrode.
(b) Explain what is meant by arc-blow in manual metal arc welding process.
(c) Explain the principle and working of gas-shielded arc welding process and give
two industrial applications of the process. [3+3+3+7]
4. (a) Explain why a flux is not required for resistance spot welding process.
(b) Give three possible causes of a defective resistance spot welds. Also suggest
remedial measures for the same.
(c) Explain the differences in the application and relative advantages of laser beam
welding and electron beam welding. [4+5+7]
5. (a) Explain about the selection of filler metals for welding of various types of
stainless steels.
(b) What are the problems associated with the welding of Austenetic stainless
steels? Explain them.

7. (a) How is brazing different from soldering? Compare them with regard to meth-
ods adopted and their applications.

sketches, explain their characteristics.

3. (a) What do you understand by the term polarity? Explain the advantages of
having different polarities.
(b) Explain the various measures to be taken to avoid ‘arc blow’
(c) List arc Welding equipment? Explain their use in the arc welding process.
