ozens of children raced toward the windows of Blossom Heath Inn last
Saturday morning as the roar of a St. Clair Shores Fire Department ladder
truck drew near.
Its him, a tiny voice called out, prompting the children to leave their seats at the
Womens Civic Leagues Brunch With Santa event. Its him!
Faces pressed against the glass, they watched as Santa Claus himself, escorted by
the fire department, arrived and moved, from the cab of the fire engine, draped with
adoring children down the hallway and into the ballroom of the storied inn.
Thats my favorite part of the whole thing, Womens Civic League event co-chair
Debbie Cottrell said. To see how excited the kids get. Thats priceless.
After he made his way around the room, stopping to talk to children at every table,
Santa found his spot in an easy chair and sat, listening to each childs holiday wish
list.

Planned electrical up-
grades to Blossom
Heath Park may take a
major weight off the
Aqua Freeze Festivals
fundraising efforts.
Committee chairs
Geri Hofmann and
Linda Bologna were
again before the Tax
Increment Finance
Authority asking for a
donation when board
members got to think-
ing: Electrical upgrades
planned by the commit-
tee needed for the event
could benefit the park
year-round. Thus per-
haps, the associated
costs could be borne by
the board rather than
the committee.
This is an investment
in the park, Richard
Widgren, TIFA chair-
man told the board.
This strikes me as
something that fits with
us if it benefits other
events at the park and
allows us to have some
we dont have now.
The committee is
working with Blair
Gilbert of Gilberts Pro
Hardware on $3,000 in
upgrades including in-
creasing the amperage
and adding electrical
outlets on the park pa-
vilion pillars so ice carv-
ers to have their own
outlet during the carv-
ing competition activity.
The additional outlets
also allow the pavilion
to be lit year-round with
the installation of LED
lights.
Other upgrades in-
clude adding outlets
and lighting from
Jefferson to the rear of
the park to supply elec-
tricity to the planned
warming tents, food
preparation stations,
entertainment stage
and bar area.
The whole back of
the park is pure black,
Hofmann said, adding
lighting is also neces-
sary to illuminate the
sledding hill, turkey
bowling, ice golf and
other activities planned
near the beach area.

The St. Clair Shores
Aqua Freeze Festival is
falling into place.
The most recent piece
of this frigid puzzle to
join the roster is the
Polar Plunge a sub-
zero dip into the waters
of Lake St. Clair.
Were happy to have
it be a part of the festi-
val, committee mem-
ber Geri Hofmann said.
Its a very popular
thing and we think its
perfect for the Aqua
Freeze.
Hofmann said she is
hoping 100 participants
take the plunge and
believes the popularity
of these types of events
will help that goal be
reached.
There are people that
go all over and do
these, she said. Weve
already got three signed
up and we really havent
done much advertising
it at all. It was just add-
ed officially to the festi-
val.
Joining the group ex-
pecting to wade into the
water at noon, Sunday
Feb. 23, at Blossom
Heath Park isnt too
complicated, Hofmann
said.
We have a waiver
drawn up that needs to
be signed and theres a
$25 fee and that gets
you a T-shirt. Thats all
there is to it, Hofmann
said. The waiver is
comparable to the waiv-
ers for other polar
plunges all over. You do
those two things and
youre ready to take the
plunge.

special an opportunity producing White Christmas is for the community.
Its an American tradition, Bischoff said of the 1954 film. It was a great movie
and a better musical. Its fantastic to work on such a classic.

Brunch With Santa not
only helps raise money for
scholarships the Womens
Civic League hands out
each year, it also helps
kick off the holiday sea-
son.
I think this is so pre-
cious, said Camille
OHara, who came with
her grandchildren. Its
heart warming. I still love
it.
Event co-chair, Erin
Stahl, said the event is a
tradition among many lo-
cal families.
We see some of the
same faces each year, she
said. And that does make
it a tradition with some
families. People in the
community sort of expect
this and look forward to it.
But, we also have a lot of
new faces and were very
thankful for that and we
want them to have a great
time and start that tradi-
tion.
Nearly 200 people at-
tended this years Brunch
With Santa, up slightly
from last year, Stahl said.
We want the event to
grow, Cottrell said. But
we also like it to be a small-
er-scale event, something
thats local and something
that the community can
enjoy.
With the addition of new
Womens Civic League
events such as the Guns-n-
Hoses softball game pit-
ting the police against the
fire department and the
Womens Expo, the
brunch is now part of the
lineup instead of being the
feature event for the orga-
nization.
Were very happy with
how well theyve been re-
ceived, Stahl said. But,
we still have a special
place in our hearts for this
brunch.
Councilwoman Candice
Rusie created a craft table
for children attending the
brunch.
These kind of events
are very important and
they really turn this city in-
to a community, Rusie
said of the brunch. It gets
people together. It allows
people to meet other peo-
ple and get involved.
Theyre very important.

Bischoff said the Grosse
Pointe Theatre produc-
tions have been a family
affair for many people.
Along with the actors,
behind-the-scene prepara-
tions have been underway
for months by more than
60 volunteers.
It brings chills to me,
said Marcia Scavarda, ex-
ecutive director of Grosse

watched a recent rehears-
al. Its so exciting to see
the work theyve done.
This will be a wonderful
event for the community.

Hofmann said addi-
tional pledges ate being
taken from participants
choosing to raise more
money.
We really always
wanted this to be a part
of it, she said. But we
had to wait until this far
into the festival to get
everything prepared
with the waiver and that.
But its ready to go now
and were very excited
about it.
Hofmann said repre-
sentatives are setting up

ing the 7 p.m., Monday,

School teacher Leslie
Bice wears many hats.
She teaches 6th grade
and helps with student
organizations, among
them is the schools
Friends of Rachel club
an organization start-
ed in the name of
Columbine High School
shooting victim, Rachel
Scott.
Its a group that is
dedicated to spreading
kindness, Bice said.
This club organizes
and runs a bunch of ac-
tivities and events that
strive to do that at
Jefferson and in the
community.
Events such as the
chain of kindness, carol-
ing for canned goods
and the groups upcom-
ing Coney night are just
a sample.
The club is in the
midst of its second year
at the school, Bice said.
We had Rachels un-
cle come and speak to
the district; it was part
of Rachels Challenge,
she said. What came
from that was teachers
and students go into a
training and we dis-
cussed the club. Then
we expanded on that.
The group started out
small, she said.
Id say we started out
with maybe 10 kids,
Bice said. And the
teachers chose these
kids. Then, from there,
it grew to whomever
wants to join can join.
Then, as the year went
along and we started to
do activities, then more
and more kids joined.
The kids that are in this
group are already the
leaders in this school
and they already know
about what kindness
does and they know the
truth about kindness
and being kind. Its
great.
Currently, the clubs
more than three dozen
members meet twice a
month.
We talk about a lot of
things when we meet,
Bice said. We talk
about everything from
bullying to how we think
the kids are receiving
the message. Its about
educating kids about be-
ing kind. Its sounds like
an easy thing, but its
not. Everybody needs
reminders to be kind.
These kids here, though,
they do a very good job
of building one another
up instead of tearing
one another down.
The results, Bice said,
are apparent.
I think there is a lot of
positive interactions
here between the kids, a
lot of positive things.
And that stems from
talking about it, bring-
ing attention to these is-
sues. If you just ignore
it, its never going to get
better.
Money raised by the
club go toward the
schools HOPE Fund
Bice said she started
about eight years ago at
the school.
Anytime we do some
sort of fundraiser, like
selling candy or any-
thing like that, the mon-
ey goes into this fund.
When people in the com-
munity need help finan-
cially we use the money
from the HOPE Fund. So
parents or guardians
needing assistance with
something, they can go
online and fill out an ap-
plication and tell us what
they need the money for.
For example, we go to
a sixth-grade camp. We
sent 11 kids to this camp
who wouldnt have been
able to go. We pay up to
half and the other half
can be paid in install-
ments, for example.
The scope of the fund
reaches further, Bice
said.
Weve helped pay for
yearbooks, or if a family
suffers a fire or some-
thing awful like that,
weve used some of that
money for donation pur-
poses, she said. Weve
bought gift cards to do-
nate, things like that are
great examples of what
the HOPE fund is all
about.
The HOPE Fund, the
FOR Club, and the
school s Posi t i ve
Behavior Systems are all
part of a broad stroke at
the school.
Its all about being
positive and being kind,
she said. The FOR Club
is just one part of this,
and its amazing how
great this kids are, and
what they have done and
continue to do to spread
this kindness with other
kids and the community.
Ive very proud of every-
one of them.
Changes at city pool
Parks and Recreation
Director Greg Essler re-
cently shared new pro-

citys pool next year.
Lap swimming is to be
offered on the weekends
and swimming classes for
6 month olds are being
added. Additional classes
will also be added as they
sell out.
Free police radios
An almost forgotten
about grant is financing
new radios for the police
department.
A Justice Assistance
Grant given to the depart-
ment last year is covering
the $17,475.07 cost of pur-
chasing six mobile and six
prep radios with accesso-
ries for the police depart-
ment.
Manufacturer Kenwood
is currently offering a buy
one, get the second for
$400 deal, Lt. Anthony
Pietrzak told the city
council. When last pur-
chased, the radios cost
$2,500 this time with
the deal the radios are
$1,400 each.
Replacing the radios
should significantly cut
the departments $16,000
budget for equipment re-
pairs, he added.
Ludos applauded
Pietrzak for finding the
grant moneys to finance
the purchase.
He meticulously
looked at these, he said.
More court costs
Recent change orders
for the court house have
eaten up the contingency
fund based on figures ob-
tained by Assistant City
Manager Mike Smith in
October.
At that time, Smith said
the fund was $93,495.
Recent change orders of
$93,654 put the contingen-
cy in the red by $129.
However, the building
fund still has $20,000 ini-
tially set aside to cover
costs had construction be-

while digging and removal

They didnt do a very
good job the last time they
did it, Rayes said of the
contractor that installed
the old parking lot.
Additional costs arose
when the city learned
Comcast would not pay to
run computer conduits to
connect the underground
system that lead back to
court house. Rayes said it
was assumed Comcast
would cover the charges
and such work was not in-
cluded in the bid.

City calendars are ex-
pected to be in the mail

Bid or no bid
City Manager Phil
Ludos cleared up concern
expressed by a resident
who submitted a higher
bid on a recently sold tax
foreclosure property on
Deizel.
The Roseville resident
said at the Nov. 4 meeting
she submitted a bid for the
house which was not con-
sidered.
Ludos explained he had
already signed the paper-
work when her bid came
in. He also reported he
contacted her in writing
and verbally explained the
situation to her.
It was done properly;
we followed all of the pro-
cedures, Ludos said.
Its a new world for us
all.
Technology has
changed the face of our
very existence, of our
everyday lives, of our
world.
In many cases, this
technology can translate
into newfound medical
treatments and diagnos-
tic tools for doctors.
In some cases it
makes our cars safer,
our personal informa-
tion more secure and
even our coffee brew
faster.
It also allows us to
connect to one another
with even more ease.
It allows us to share
experiences and occa-
sion with people across
the world and all
within 140 characters or
the click of a mouse.
I, in particular, love it.
Smart phones, iPads
and other marvels of the
modern world are now
an important part of my
life. I get e-mails on my
phone, texts on my iPad
and find time to surf the
Internet on both devices
with speed and preci-
sion.
Ive ordered every-
thing from camera gear
to pizzas from my
iPhone and iPad and Im
certain this will contin-
ue.
Ive posted photos,
chatted with friends and
Tweeted on a slew of
topics and have truly en-
joyed the conversation
in some cases with
friends and colleagues
thousands of miles
away.
Ive Skyped,
Facetimed and
Spreecasted.
Ive posted YouTube
videos and been part of
a podcast or two as well.
This jargon is the vo-
cabulary of times and
becoming familiar with
it is important.
Tweet-le De
Recently, the
Connection newspaper
delved into the Twitter
world.
Honestly, its some-
thing Im really excited
about.
Opening up this as-
pect of our publication
not only allows me, for
example, to tweet infor-
mation and content, but
I can also inject some
personality into what I
do here at the
Connection.
Its one of the brilliant
benefits of social media
it encourages conver-
sation and personality-
driven exchanges be-
tween people, albeit be-
hind a screen and key-
board.
Just last week I tweet-
ed about everything
from a Red Wings as-
sembly to homecoming
at South Lake High
School. And this is just
the beginning of what
we offer via Twitter.
Teases to upcoming
stories, tidbits on events
in real-time and even
photos along with rele-
vant retweets are all
part of the plan.
I believe, its made the
best newspaper in town,
the Connection, even
better.
Naturally then, I
strongly encourage ev-
eryone reading this col-
umn to check us out on
Twiiter and to start
following us @scscon-
nection.
For those of you famil-
iar with Twitter and the
concept and process,
youll appreciate the
tweets and dive right in
to following us.
For those of you new
to Twitter its easy to
get the hang of, and Im
betting youll soon be-
come a fan.
A newspaper
for today
The Connection, Im
proud to say, is a modern
newspaper complete
with vibrant photos, en-
gaging stories and enter-
taining features.
Our publication has
substance, a creative
flair and personality. I
know a great effort is
made each and every
week to maintain and
improve with every pho-
to and every word.
Becoming active par-
ticipants on Twitter is
just an example of the
commitment weve made
to being a modern news-
paper for a readership
worthy of nothing short
of the best publication
possible.

Know Your Skin
By Lisa A. Manz-Dulac, MD
Eczema, or atopic dermatitis, is
a common chronic condition that
afects both children and adults. It
is more common in children whose
parents also have had eczema.
As winter approaches, it brings
not only colder dry air, but also
an increase in eczema fares. It
most commonly occurs on the
face, inside the elbow, behind the
knees and on the hands and feet.
However it can occur on any body
part. Eczema usually presents as
dry, itchy patches of skin that may
be infamed and red. Scratching
the skin can also cause cracking,
blisters, and weeping, crusting or
thickened skin.
Tere are several irritants that
are known to make the symptoms
of eczema worse. Tese include
soaps, household cleansers and
fragrance detergents, and some
perfume and makeup. Wool, man-
made fbers & feathers can also be
a factor.
Developing a good skin care
routine is most important in the
treatment of eczema. Make sure to
moisturize daily with a fragrance-
free lotion or cream, avoid long,
hot showers & use a humidifer
during the winter. Because skin
afected by eczema is susceptible
to infection, a physicians care
may be appropriate. Treatments
include topical steroids and oral
antihistamines. More severe rashes
may require oral steroids, and
antibiotics if infection is present.

As we celebrate the season and anticipate 2014, we look back on
this year and its many blessings.
We are grateful for our associates and physicians for their
dedication and passion for healing the entire personbody, mind
and spirit. We are thankful for our patients. For us, our patients
are the reason we exist, and what give us the inspiration to
continue our ministry each day. Thank you for your support.
Wishing you and yours a blessed Christmas
and a happy and healthy New Year!
Thanks to all our associates and physicians who
participated in the fourth annual Christmas
store on Dec. 7, where we provided hundreds of
children with gifs, food and clothing!
