Kristin Shaw Program Proposal For H2O Lets Go, Deep!

By entering the doors to your local public library, you are also entering a STEMrich environment. Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics programs in libraries are crucial in the support of the public schools. The Maryland State Department of Education is committed to making STEM a priority for all students. STEM is reflective of the skills and knowledge needed to prepare students for post-secondary study and the increasing demands of the 21st century workforce. Graduating students will be prepared for any career, not just STEM careers, through the strong requirements placed on them through the education sector. STEM education ensures that all students, regardless of age and ability, will learn to answer complex questions, to investigate global issues, and to develop solutions to real-world problems. STEM education requires that students be engaged in environments which promote active learning, provide opportunities for engagement, inquiry, and collaboration, and emphasize realworld application. The skills and content of STEM are reinforced at the local library through programming. Engaging patrons from preschool age through adults in STEM environments is where the local library can meet this need. The library will need more STEM programs, as STEM education cannot be overemphasized. The H2O Lets Go, Deep! STEM program will provide opportunities of the exploration science through water. The seven through nine year old patrons will learn a small part of the natural world around them and how it works. Content will be explored through understanding that water is heavier than air and that water exerts more pressure per pound on an object than air does. The schoolage patrons will learn that water pressure builds as the water becomes deeper. Diving suits create pressure from within to equal the pressure on the outside. Diving equipment will be available during the program. Understanding water depths of the oceans and the pressure of those depths will allow the patrons to put skills into practice through a hands-on water experiment. The patrons will work together in pairs to test if the pressure at the bottom of a fluid-filled carton is the same as, greater than, or less than it is at the top. The water will leave the container through the holes in the side and end up in the plastic catch basin. The stream of water from the lowest hole will shoot out the longest. The stream of water from the middle hole will be shorter, and the stream from the top hole will

be shortest of the three. It can be concluded that there is greater water pressure at the bottom of the container. Potential Community Partners would be those longstanding partners who already have established relationships with the library. Some longstanding partners are PNC Bank, APGFCU, Kilby Cream, KFC/Taco Bell, and The Orioles. Potential new partners could possibly be local science and technology businesses such as W.L. Gore which specializes in products derived from fluoropolymers. W.L. Gore is a leading maker of medical devices. ATK, leading supplier of aerospace and defense products recently received a contract by the U.S. Naval Supply Systems Command for the manufacturing of a propellant that will be used on torpedo systems, which is used with combat submarines torpedoes to sink enemy ships. Verbal feedback during and following the program is an immediate form of evaluating the value and effectiveness of the program. A county wide Participant Evaluation for Childrens Classes/Events will be another form of evaluation. Participants will anonymously fill in the blanks with the following information: program title, date, library name. The following questions are included on the form: How did you learn about this program? What did you like best about this experience? What would you change? Would you recommend this program to your friends? Why? The evaluator is also asked if they would like to receive the library newsletter via email. The H2O Lets Go, Deep! STEM Program corresponds to the librarys mission statement by providing lifelong educational opportunities and resources for all. Through increasing alignment of current and new library services to community needs and adjusting resources to enhance their value, the library, just as the Maryland State Department of Education, is committed to making STEM a priority for all students. The educational STEM programming has become a necessity in the success of all public school children. Through providing STEM opportunities the library is promoting individual and community success by offering a STEM experience in a friendly, welcoming environment.

Children will have the opportunity to explore what it is like to wear diving equipment, as the equipment will be available during the program. Understanding water depths of the oceans and the pressure of those depths will allow the patrons to put skills into practice through a water experiment (you might get wet!). Were looking forward to going deep into the depths of H2O!
