1 PURPOSE
SCANMNT explains how to perform maintenance work on MIS and MAS multiplex rings. Throughout this sheet,
"Ring coupler" or "token ring coupler" are used to mean: - in an SMB: the AATRA applique (an AATRA applique is shared by two Token Rings), - in a SCH: the RCAJx board (one RCAJx board for each Token Ring) - in configurations other than SMBs or SCHs: the ACAJx board (one ACAJx board for each Token Ring) "Distribution frame" is used to mean: - in an SMB: the AATCU applique (one AATCU applique connects up to 16 SMBs on a Token Ring and an ALAN1 lead connects an AATRA to the AATCU of a ring) - in an SCH: the RAAJx applique (the RAAJx applique is opposite the RCAJx board) - in configurations other than SMBs or SCHs: the AAISM board on the backplane (the AAISM board is opposite the ACAJx board) Similarly, when a "control station" or "main control station" is mentioned, it means an SMC or SMB depending on the configuration in question.

Use also SCANMNT to carry out the tasks described in the table below. You should first refer to chapter 3 "Warning". If you want to... check out ring operation refer to... section 5.4
repair a ring : the "MIS/MAS RING DIAG" alarm section 6.1 repair a ring : the "SM - FAIL WITH DIAG" with section 6.2 "ADAPTER OS" diagnosis repair a ring : the "SM - FAIL WITH COMPLEX section 6.3 DIAG" with "PDIA=26" diagnosis repair a ring : the "SM - FAIL WITH COMPLEX section 6.4 DIAG" with "PDIA=28" diagnosis repair a ring : with AMX=x the "FAULTY UNIT" alarm section 6.5
Note :
An intermittent failure is revealed by repeated ring data display requests using the AMXIL command with the option DBG=HF to observe the CPTBEA counters (see FOP AMXIL). A ring has an intermittent fault if:
- the ring is down but becomes operational again without any repair work having been carried out on it (the CPTBEA counter is incremented), - the phenomenon occurs several times in a week, or month.
3 WARNING
CAUTION: For any work on the "distribution frames" or the cables of a ring:
- It is important to accurately identify the "distribution frame" or cable that is to be worked on. - Do not remove "distribution frames" or cables from unpopulated stations. This assembly contributes to the operation of the rings.

- Look up the precautions to be taken when replacing a board (see operator guide: C orrect i ve mai ntenance manag ement MCGOP). - Check to see whether there are any special precautions to be taken for the type of board to be replaced (see FEX SCCARTES).
- If a station reload occurs (BLO -> ES), you must reset the ring to BLOM.
Step 4 Check out operation of the ring Display ring status information after resetting the fault counters. For details, see section 5.4. End
5 DETAILED GUIDE
The detailed description concerns only the "MIS/MAS RING OS" alarm. Other cases are dealt with in section 6 "Repairing a ring". You should refer to:
- the section of the Corrective maintenance management operator guide MCGOP which deals with MIS and MAS multiplexes. - appendix A, which describes some ring maintenance-specific points, in particular how to set a ring to the BLOM state. - appendices B and C, which explain how to analyse responses to the AMXIL command with the option DBG=HF.

then... go on to section 6.1 "Repairing a ring (MIS/MAS RING DIAG alarm)" the response to the last AMXIL command will show that there is a station with its adapter in the DIAG state (STT.=DIAG). Continue with the procedure
e) If the station with the adapter in the DIAG state is an SMM, shut down the standby SMM using the SETSCH command, with SCHSTATE=BLOM (see FOP SETSCH). f) Put the ring into service using the AMXMO command, with AMX=x and STATE=ES (see FOP AMXMO01). g) For ten minutes or so, repeatedly display ring status information using the AMXIL command, with the option DBG=HF and AMX=x (see FOP AMXIL). The ETAPHY field gives the ring status: if all ring status display commands give the result ETAPHY=OPER. If the SM with the adapter in the DIAG then... state... is an SMM is not an SMM go on to section 6.2 "Repairing a ring (ADAPTER OS diagnostic report)" a) wait for the station to be taken out of service automatically. The "SM - FAIL WITH DIAG" alarm, with additional information "ADAPTER OS" appears. NOTE If the system is running in degraded mode, it may not permit the station to be taken out of service. In this case, clear the cause of the degraded operating state. b) go on to section 6.2 "Repairing a ring (ADAPTER OS diagnostic report)" if a ring status display command gives the result ETAPHY=BEAC, the fault is on the station supporting the GA and not on the station specified (for details on stations supporting GA and the ring manager, refer to the Corrective maintenance management operator guide MCGOP). a) set the station that is wrongly indicated as potentially faulty to the ES state. Use either SETSCH for an SMM (see FOP SETSCH) or ESMMO for any other type of station (see FOP ESMMO). b) set the ring to the BLOM state using the AMXMO command (see FOP AMXMO-01). c) proceed as described in section 6.1.2 "Identifying the station supporting GA". d) depending on the nature of the ring: if the fault concerns a MIS ring, go on to section 6.1.4 "Tracing a fault on the station supporting GA: MIS case", if the fault concerns a MAS ring, go on to section 6.1.5 "Tracing a fault on a station supporting GA: MAS case". h) End of step 2.
Note :
The procedure must be carried out once and then repeated 24 hours later.
To check out operation of the ring: a) Display ring status information using the AMXIL command with the option DBG=HF (see FOP AMXIL). The indication STT.=DINS indicates that the station whose address is given in the AM field is not inserted on the ring. The STT. field does not appear if the station is inserted. b) Following the status display, check that: the logical status of the ring is STT.=ES, the physical status of the ring is ETAPHY=OPER, all the stations are inserted on the ring. c) If a station is not inserted on the ring, try to insert it as follows: 1) shut down the station (see FEX SCSMNT), 2) put the station into service (see FEX SCSMNT). 3) display the ring status again using the AMXIL command with the option DBG=HF (see FOP AMXIL) to check that all the stations are inserted. d) Set all fault counters to zero using the AMXSV command (see FOP AMXSV). e) Wait six minutes.

APPENDIX A : MULTIPLEX RINGS: SPECIAL FEATURES A.1 Setting a ring to the BLOM state
Before carrying out any work on a ring, it must be set to the BLOM state using the AMXMO command (see FOP AMXMO-01). When a ring is set to the BLOM state, the stations that are in service are alerted and then use the other ring to exchange messages. However, a station that is out of service when the ring is set to the BLOM state will not be alerted. So, when this station is set to the ES state, the AMXMO command must be run again with STATE=BLOM. Similarly, the ring must be set to BLOM again after an SMM switchover.
For SMs other than those in SMB or SCH configurations, the AAISM boards for connecting the stations to the rings are positioned as shown in the backplane rear view below. Figure 2 : Rear view of an SM backplane
For SMB configurations, the "distribution frames" (AATCU appliques) can support up to 16 SMBs. All the cables for connection to the rings are labelled; the AMXIL command can also be used to identify the "distribution frame" (see FOP AMXIL). For a ring, the AMXIL command identifies: - the SMBs connected to that ring (AM=SMBn) and their states (ETAT=...), - for each of these SMBs, AMXIL identifies: the reference of the SMB supporting the AATCU that is the "distribution frame" of the stations on the ring (AMH=SMBx), the geographic address of the AATCU (AGEO=Sxx-Txx-Bxx-Axx-Rxx).

On a token ring, information flows in just one direction. The columns of the SMCOUR field (current SM) and SMPREC field (previous SM) can be used to determine the direction. It is then easy to work out the order of the stations on the ring. If the operational state of the ring is too degraded for this order to be worked out, refer to the order given by the peer ring. In the example above, the ring is made up as follows:
By convention, a section SMx-SMy indicates station SMx and all those that precede it as far as SMy. In the example:
- SMC4-SMC3 corresponds to stations SMC4 and SMC3 - SMC3-SMC4 corresponds to stations SMC3, SMC2, SMC1, SMMB, SMMA, SMC5 and SMC4

In the example above, the last failure (Beacon) seen on the ring is located on section SMC3-SMC2. The ring is currently operational (ETAPHY=OPER). The SMAMPR field identifies the station handling the active monitor function (SMC3 in the example above). This station serves a particular synchronization function on the token ring.
Note :
- for the counters that log ring-related events to provide usable information, you must:
1) reset the counters using the AMXSV command (see FOP AMXSV), 2) observe the trend of the counter readings using the AMXIL command with the option DBG=HF (see FOP AMXIL). - each time a station is inserted on or removed from a ring, LINERR, BURSTE and LOSTFR faults are caused for the stations located downline from the point of insertion. The TOKERR counter is incremented with each change of ring configuration. This is why you will observe that the fault counters for all the stations located downline from the standby SMC are incremented daily. These faults are caused by shutdowns of this SMC in routine LOCAVAR tests.

2 : loss of signal (triggers the election of a new station to support the active monitor function) -> clear break in the ring (faulty cable, etc) 3 : failure to elect a station supporting the active monitor function (frame lost) -> less clear failure attributable to the ACAJx or RCAJx board normally belonging to the station indicated by the SMPBRE field and, more rarely, to the station indicated by the SMBEAT field 4 : failure to elect a station to support the active monitor function (frame received) /SMPBRE /SMAMPR /COUNTERS /CPTBEA /CPTCLM /SMCOUR /SMPREC /MONERR /MONDUP /ADRDUP /POLLFL SM receiving the indication of a fault (Beacon). Normally, this is the SM upstream from the SM generating the fault indication. SM supporting the active monitor function. Counters recording events occurring since the last time the ring was initialised or the last backup by the AMXSV command. Number of failures (Beacon counter). Number of token requests (number of times a station supporting the active monitor function is elected). Current SM. The station indicated by this field and the station indicated by the SMPREC field delimit a section of the ring. Previous SM. Active monitor function fault detected by a standby monitor. The same ring has more than one station supporting the active monitor function. Two adapters have the same address on the same ring (fault detected during the election of a station to support the active monitor function). Loss of AMP frame sent periodically (at 7.5 s intervals) by the active monitor function to tell the other adapters (standby monitors) that it is operating (AMP = active monitor present). Transmission error revealed by the correcting codes (differential Manchester code). No transition on the line signal for longer than five half bit intervals. An "active monitor present" or "standby monitor present" frame addressed to an adapter has not been recognised or copied by that adapter. This fault is detected by the next adapter. An adapter sending a frame has not received the echo of that frame. An adapter has detected a frame addressed to it but has no more buffer space available to copy it (receive mode congestion). A frame addressed to a specified adapter has already been taken by another.
