SAFC PHARMA® PREMIERES GLOBAL SYMPOSIUM ON ADVANCES IN ORGANIC

SOLID STATE CHEMISTRY

St. Louis, MO - August 27, 2009 - SAFC® (www.safcglobal.com), a member of the Sigma-
Aldrich® Group (NASDAQ: SIAL), announced today that its SAFC Pharma® business segment
will host its first Pharmorphix® Organic Solid State Chemistry Symposium at The Trinity
Centre, Cambridge Science Park, UK, from 9:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. on September 25, 2009.

Solid-form characterization and research can play an important part in enhancing the
understanding of the physical properties of active pharmaceutical ingredients (APIs) and
enable important modifications to ensure patient benefit, optimize product development and
protect intellectual property.

The complimentary symposium will foster a collaborative forum, with discussions led by
industrial and academic global experts in this rapidly expanding field of solid state chemistry,
including H. Lundbeck A/S, Pfizer, AstraZeneca, the University of Bradford’s Institute of
Pharmaceutical Innovation and SAFC Pharma. With its objective being the exchange of ideas,
the symposium will include papers and presentations on current and recently-completed
projects.

Following the presentations, delegates will have the opportunity to attend a networking
reception and a tour of SAFC Pharma’s state-of-the-art 12,500 sq. ft. Pharmorphix solid state
research facility.
