Brochure
Description:
A two sided (duplex) folding brochure.

Program(s)/Tools: Adobe Photoshop, Adobe InDesign, Adobe Illustrator. Date: 12/8/13 Course/ Instructor:
Comm 130 Section 06/ Julie Peterson

Objectives: Set up and align a two-sided, folded document. Create an original

company logo and use it in a brochure. Incorporate quality images. (Incorporate at least four quality images (Not including the logo). One should be clipped in Photoshop and text-wrapped in InDesign so the text follows the cutout shape of the image.) Write at least 250 words of original copy with at least three paragraphs. Trim for a full bleed and print in duplex (two-sided) color.

Process: In Adobe InDesign I set up a two page project with the idea that the two
pages would be the front and back side of my brochure. I used the ruler tool to illustrate where the fold lines would be and designed each section independently. While each area was its own section the use of color and a unique image style added repetition. The paragraph styling used proximity and repetition. All of the images had their backgrounds removed in Adobe Photoshop. After they had their backgrounds removed I used LiveTrace in Adobe Illustrator. I then moved some anchor points to adjust the look of the image. I then used the symbol sprayer tool to give the paint splatter look in the background. I used the symbol stain tool to give the paint splatter a colorful and exciting look. I then loaded these images into InDesign. For the images that have a text wrap around them I used the Text wrap tool specify the text wrap should be around the alpha channel of the image and not the image frame. I then used the paragraph styling tool to give the headings and body copy a uniform and consistent look. I saved a style for the headings and paragraph and then applied it to each heading and paragraph. This allowed me to limit the chance of mistakes or inconsistencies.

Montage
Description:
one seamless image. The blending of two high resolution shots to give the appearance of

Program(s)/Tools: Adobe Photoshop. Date: 10/26/13 Course/ Instructor:

Comm 130 Section 06/ Julie Peterson

Objectives: Learn to manage Photoshop layers.

Learn to blend images together smoothly, using masks. Use filters. Apply appropriate typography. Choosing good quality images. Apply typography principles. Unifying a piece with a consistent theme.

Process:
1.I cropped the background image to 8.5x11. 2. I selected the general shape of the first face and cut it and placed it on the second face 3.I then transformed the size and shape of the first face to match that of the second. I then used Photoshops blending edit to merge the two. 4.I then placed another layer which had the second models original photo on it. 5. I used a mask on this layer and gradually blended the two layers to give a seamless look. 6. I adjusted the color values so the skin tones blended more naturally. 7. I also used the smart sharpen filter. 8. In the background I used the add noise filter. 9. I used font that complimented the theme. I did not want the font to be the focus.

Imaging
Description:
A photograph I took at a natural history museum that I then edited and formatted in Adobe Photoshop.

Program(s)/Tools: Adobe Photoshop and a Canon 5d MKI. Date: 10/19/13 Course/ Instructor:
Comm 130 Section 06/ Julie Peterson

Objectives: Learn basic photography skills.

Use a digital camera to take a quality image, then download it. Size and crop the image. Adjust image brightness, contrast, hue and saturation levels. Use a selection tool to isolate a portion of the image. Desaturate the selected portion of the image. Use a filter or colorize a portion of the image.

Process: I took this with my sisters 5D MKI. The hand is my nephew. Even though
it was in a low light museum I still got a great shot. I took the image into Photoshop and cropped it to a 6x6 square. I selected the background using the quick selection tool and faded it to a deep and rich black. I then used the quick select tool to isolate the prehistoric fish. I used a water paint filter to give it an interesting texture. I then changed the original hue to give it an interesting blue and red color. I then used the quick select tool to isolate the arm and hand of my nephew. I desaturated all the color from it. I then used an oil paint filter to make it smooth looking and give it an interesting texture.

Business Card
Description:
Business cards that were designed to match a corresponding letterhead. The design revolves around the featured logo which I created.

Program(s)/Tools: Adobe InDesign and Illustrator. Date: 11/9/13 Course/ Instructor:

Comm 130 Section 06/ Julie Peterson

Objectives: Create a new logo to fit a company or personal image.

Design consistent layouts for a business card and letterhead. Apply typography rules keeping small copy. Use the basic tools of Illustrator and InDesign.

Process: I created the Logo using the font tool and shapes tool in Adobe Illustrator.
These shapes were placed on 3 different layers within my project. Separating the different shapes and font into layers allowed me to add certain effects and make precise edits with out changing the other elements of the design. This greater flexability allowed me create a logo that is dynamic yet natural looking. I made a business card based on the theme of the letterhead it corresponds to . I used the ruler tool to outline the dementions of the business card. On one side I made the logo large and centered it on the card. I used the same blue texture from there letterhead to give the card a consistent look. On the back side I put the contact information in. The back ground was mostly white but I did add the same water mark found in the bottom right of the letterhead. This business card is designed to compliment the letterhead and not stand out too much on its own.

Objectives: Create a new logo to fit a company or personal image.

Design consistent layouts for a business card and letterhead. Apply typography rules keeping small copy. Use the basic tools of Illustrator and InDesign.

Process: After creating the logo I brought it into Adobe Indesign. In this program I
used my logo to make a letterhead look more professional. I brought in a subtle dark blue texture to place at the head of this project. This texture compliments the color scheme and gives a touch of visual interest. I then put the contact information in the top right of the page. Lastly I blew up an other copy of my logo and put it in the bottom right of the page. I turned the opacity very low on this logo so it appears as a water mark.

Program(s)/Tools: Adobe InDesign. Date: 10/5/13 Course/ Instructor:

Comm 130 Section 06/ Julie Peterson

Objectives: Apply the design principles and use appropriate typography.

Incorporate basic InDesign skills to improve basic flier layout. Create a project folder with image, logo and InDesign document to keep links intact.

Process: I Sketched out four basic layouts and decided on one. I then used the
basic principles of design to make an aesthetically pleasing flow. I focused specifically on repetition and flow. Using the tools in InDesign to create texts boxes that interacted with the geometry on the page naturally. I tried to make an information dense page that felt light to look at using white space to achieve that balance.

Logos
Description:
Three logo variations for the same company.

Program(s)/Tools: Adobe Illustrator. Date: 11/2/13 Course/ Instructor:

Use the basic tools of Illustrator.

Comm 130 Section 06/ Julie Peterson

Objectives: Create a variety of logos to fit a company or personal image. Process: Verus Value is meant to a modern technology company.
The top logo is to

remind the viewer of a cd. I used the ellipse tool to make a perfect circle. I then copied and pasted a new circle on top of the original. I used the pathfinder tools minus from front option to cut up the inner circles. Then I used the extrude and bevel effect to give the whole logo some depth. The second logo is a scale. I used the shape tool emulate the basic structure of a scale. I then used the direct selection tool to manipulate these shapes so that they looked more like the scale I was emulating. I then used the minus from front option to break up the shapes so the scale did not look so blocky. The bottom logo resembles a western sherif badge and a coin. This is to inforce the idea that the company has authority in declaring what has value. This logo used mostly the shapes the shape tool can produce. To give it an interesting look the logo was made up of several layers. A close look at the logo will reveal that the text intertwines with the star behind it.

Event Ad
Description:

Date: 10/14/13 Course/ Instructor:

Create a full-bleed design Use text boxes for layout in Word. Insert and edit images in Word.

Comm 130 Section 06/ Julie Peterson

Objectives: Find, scan and import a high-quality image.

Process: I found a high quality photograph I took of a wild Blackberry bush

and scaned it onto my my computer. I thought the natural greens and purples would compliment the yellow/gold and blue color scheme of the Boy Scouts. I then put a light green box behind the main text and lowered the opacity. This seperated the text from the busy background while still allowing the picture to feel open and natural. I then put a purple box at the bottom to tie in the colors of the Blackberry bush. All of the colors in the ad looks as if they were taken from a part of the photo. Microsoft word is a great alternative to the more traditional design programs.

Web Page
Description:
Adobe Photoshop NetBeans
A web page designed to showcase a personally created logo.

Program(s)/Tools: TextWrangler

Date: 11/23/13 Course/ Instructor:

Comm 130 Section 06/ Julie Peterson

Objectives: Size and optimize an original logo as a .png for a web page.
Write content to describe the process of creating your logo and how it appeals to a target audience. Design a web page using HTML to display the logo and content. Acquire a working knowledge of HTML and the basic structure of CSS Identify hex colors for web design. Compress multiple files in a zipped folder to attach as one file.

Process: I designed this site using a basic html editing program called netbeans.
I wrote a page using best practice HTML5 code. The HTML code give the site its basic structure like the heading, main article, and footer. I then linked an external stylesheet to the html page to give it is aesthetic look. The CSS is how I matched the colors from the logo. It is also how the website is framed and organized. I also used CSS to establish a backup protocol in case the users browser could not read the original code. This insures that no matter what the user has an intuitive and pleasing viewing experience.
