Chapter 5

5.1!
Remember: A

direct variation looks like: y=ax. An inverse variation looks like: y= a/x. For both, a can NOT equal 0. To check if an equation is inverse, check if the products of xy (for an ordered pair) are constant or close to being constant. Joint variations look like: z=axy or p=aqrs.

Practice Problems!
1.)

Is this an example of direct variation, inverse variation, or neither? a. )Xy= 7. b.) y= x+3. c.) y/4= x.

Answers!
1.)

a.)

Inverse, because it can be rewritten as y=7/x, which equals y=a/x. b.) Neither, it is adding, which does not cover either type of variation. c.) Direct, because it can be rewritten as y=4x, which equals y=ax.

Practice Problems!
a.)

The variables x and y vary inversely. Write an equation using x=8 and y=-1. Then find y when x=2. b.) The variables x and y vary inversely. Write an equation using x=1/2 and y=12. Then find y when x=2.

Answers!
a.)

Equation: -1= a/8. a= 8*-1a=-8. Plug a into the equation where x=2y= -8/2. Solvey=-4. b.) Equation: 12= a/ ( ). a= * 6a=6. Plug a into the equation where x=2y=6/2y=3.

Practice Problems!
1.)

The variable z varies jointly with x and y. Write an equation using x=-2, y=6, and z=18. Then find z when x=-2 and y=5. 2.) Write an equation: a.) y varies inversely with the square of x. b.) x varies jointly with t and r and inversely with s.

Answers!
1.)

z= axy. 18= a[(-2)(6)] 18= -12a 18/-12= a/-12 -3/2= a, z= (-3/2)xy Z= (-3/2)(-2)(5) Z= 15. 2.) a.) y varies inversely (y=a/x) with the square of x. y= a/ x^2. b.) x varies jointly with t and r and inversely with s. x= atr/ s.

5.2!

Remember: Rational functions look like: f(x)=p(x)/ q(x) where p(x) and q(x) are polynomials and q(x) does not equal 0. An inverse variation is a rational function. The graph of the parent function (f(x)=1/x) is a hyperbola, consisting of two symmetrical parts called branches. Domain and range are all nonzero real numbers. The domain is always not equal to the vertical asymptote; the range is always not equal to the horizontal asymptote. To graph a translation (y=a/x-h + k): 1. Draw the asymptotes. X= x-h=0. y= k. 2. Makes a table and plot the points. 3. Draw the 2 branches so they pass through the points and approach the asymptotes.

5.2!
Remember:

To

solve an equation, such as y= 3x-5/ x+2, to make graphing easier: 1. Combine: 3(x+2) -6-5/ x+2. 2. Simplify: 3(x+2) -11/ x+2. 3. Split it up: 3(x+2)/x+2 11/x+2. 4. Simplify: -11/x+2 +3.
