REGISTRATION FORM Can MSMEs be India's sustainable growth engine? Introduction

International experience with micro, small and medium enterprises (MSMEs) suggests that the sector can be an important driver of social inclusion, employment, investment, exports, poverty reduction and economic growth. Such enterprises are especially crucial in developing countries such as India where growth of large scale enterprises might be constrained by technology, finance, skills, external competition and domestic institutions & policy. As we seek a more inclusive and sustainable growth and to capitalize from the country's "demographic dividend", we will require a more labor-intensive economic growth model. A strengthened and more resilient MSME sector would aid in economic recovery and add greater stability to the system. Second, inclusive growth is being accorded very high priority and is being assiduously pursued by the policy makers through financial inclusion, financial literacy and consumer protection initiatives. MSMEs are not only envisaged to be major beneficiaries of these efforts but are also expected to facilitate financial inclusion from the demand side. Third, the deterioration in trade balance of the country requires urgent focus on exports. MSMEs have a critical role to play in enhancing our export competitiveness given their very significant share in exports. Finally, co-production arrangements between large scale manufacturing and MSMEs through forward and backward linkages could be instrumental in spurring the expansion of large enterprises. However, the vast potential of MSMEs is often not realized because of problems commonly related to skills training size, isolation, market opportunities, standards/ quality, supply chains, logistics and technology innovation. In order to enable MSMEs tide over the problems, it is imperative to understand and assess the real needs of the MSMEs and accordingly offer them a conducive environment and devise approaches that ensure their sustainable growth, which, in the present context, calls for an approach with knowledge playing a predominant role. This Conference will deliberate on these and other challenges 7 National Conference (3-4 January 2014)
