Unison Scripture
PSALM 146:5-10 (NIV)
Blessed are those whose help is the God of Jacob, whose hope is in the Lord their God. 6He is the Maker of heaven and earth, the sea, and everything in themhe remains faithful forever. 7 He upholds the cause of the oppressed and gives food to the hungry. The Lord sets prisoners free, 8the Lord gives sight to the blind, the Lord lifts up those who are bowed down, the Lord loves the righteous.
9

The Lord watches over the foreigner and sustains the fatherless and the widow, but he frustrates the ways of the wicked. 10The Lord reigns forever, your God, O Zion, for all generations. Praise the Lord.

HYMN OF PRAISE/UNISON SCRIPTURE

Litany in Remembrance of Madiba

Nelson Rolihlahla Mandela
July 18, 1918 - December 5, 2013

MINISTER: We give thanks for the life and legacy of Gods mighty warrior and peacemaker, Nelson R. Mandela. We join the world in committing him to the One who gives all life and to dedicate ourselves to living out, and passing on, the rich legacy he has left for us. PEOPLE: Almighty and gracious God, we thank and praise You, that You formed, nurtured and molded your servant, Nelson Madiba Mandela to lead a world toward light when darkness surrounded, and to lead a world toward reconciliation when conflict reigned.

MINISTER: Apartheid was the enemy and injustice was Madibas foe. Those of us watching from afar, who read of his plight and stood in solidarity, boycotted goods or dared to post Free South Africa signs on our church lawns, were guided by his witness and moved by his seemingly unbreakable spirit. With reverence on our lips, we prayed for and called out the nameNelson Mandela.

Litany in Remembrance of Madiba

PEOPLE: When the world witnessed his release from prison, we declared Free Nelson Mandela and the world celebrated with our South African brothers and sisters. We knew only You, O God, could do this. Only You could give us hope when there was only despair. And for this we thank and praise You.

MINISTER: We thank You for the wisdom of Madiba, who showed us what it means to truly believe in the possibility and the power of the human spirit. Twenty-seven years in prison did not dampen resolve or steer him off course. Madiba was steadfast and determined, a living testament to the communal spirit of Ubuntu, I am, because we are.
LITANY A IN WORD REMEMBRANCE FROM THE PASTOR OF MADIBA

PEOPLE:

From prisoner to President, he led the country to affirm the hope and human dignity of a nation; and to provide for his people, those with the least in the midst of plenty.

MINISTER: In our ongoing quest for true freedom, the words of Nelson Mandela will always guide our steps: Freedom is indivisible; the chains on any one of my people were the chains on all of them, the chains of all of my people were the chains on me . . . we have merely achieved the freedom to be free, the right not to be oppressed. PEOPLE: We have not taken the final step of our journey . . . for to be free is not merely to cast off ones chains, but to live in a way that respects and enhances the freedom of others.

MINISTER: We thank the Creator of all things for Nelson Mandelas living testimony of hope, grace and dignity to all humanity. He was the spirit of Ubuntu. PEOPLE: Micah 6:8: And what does the Lord require of you? To act justly and to love mercy and to walk humbly with your God. May we now commit ourselves to embodying Nelson Mandelas vision of non-racialism, forgiveness, community, humility, and building a new world morality. May almighty God watch over us. May the light of our new ancestor, Nelson Madiba Mandela, continue to shine on us. May his vision continue to inspire us. And, may the blessings of God continue to be with us, now and forever. Yes, the struggle continues. Amandla! Amen.

ALL:

Adapted by The Samuel DeWitt Proctor Conference, in solidarity and unity with Kairos Southern Africa, and in appreciation to Dr. Allan Boesak. (Slightly abridged)

Raise The Roof

Every time we think of you, we thank God for you. Day and night youre in our prayers as we call to mind your work of faith, your labor of love, and your patience of hope in following our Master, Jesus Christ, before God our Father. It is clear to us, friends, that God not only loves you very much but also has put his hand on you for something special. When the Message we preached came to you, it wasnt just words. Something happened in you. The Holy Spirit put steel in your convictions. 1 Thessalonians 1:2-5 The Message

Congratulations Church! As of December 12th, we have received total pledges of $3,061,175 from only 741 members/ families. We serve an AWESOME God! Provision is being made right before our eyes for the critical repairs needed for our church home! This is a wonderful milestone, and over 60% of our goal. We also have a total of 2,114 members who have Opted-In to receive Raise the Roof Campaign updates and information. To put this in perspective, if the remaining members that have optedin, but have yet to complete their pledge, were to pledge $300 a year (or $25 a month) we would have an additional $2,059,000, which will exceed our goal of $5 million! Thats how close we are! If you havent opted-in yet, please stop by the Raise the Roof table in the Narthex to do so. And, if you have opted-in, but have not completed your pledge, today would be a great time to get that taken care of. Finally, if you have made your pledge, December is a great month to complete you 2013 Raise the Roof gift. You can also contribute to our Raise the Roof campaign by offering your time and talents. During the course of the campaign there will be many opportunities to serve in various aspects of the campaign. Please sign up to volunteer at the Raise the Roof tables throughout the church. Stay Informed. Visit the Raise the Roof web site: www.raisetheroofcampaign.org.

Advent Meditation
ENRICHING LIFE PUTTING FIRST THINGS FIRST
Shepherds on a Bethlehem hillside heard an angel proclaim, I bring you good tidings of great joy. Wanting to experience that joy, they hurried to a humble manger and then returned glorifying and praising God. What kind of trip could we take today to make Gods promise real to us? The shepherds had their lives enriched. Can we find a similar enrichment? Jesus spoke to this question in his Sermon on the Mount. He acknowledged that life has many routine things to do, providing the basic necessities of life, but then adds, Seek first the kingdom of God and his righteousness, and all these things shall be added unto you. (Matthew 6:33). How do we do this? One way is to be careful about our priorities. As the shepherds went to Bethlehem, they surely kept their sheep secure, but somehow they found a way to make the good news real and personal. What comes first in our lives? What do we want to come as a result of our hard work? If our highest goal is a happy home, is this possible, when we let our work demand all of our time and energy? We need to work, but human beings are not merely beasts of burden, driven by others. Even if our careers demand most of our time, we can make our working hours times of productive human relationships. The free time we have left, we can make quality time at home and with those we love. Another first is the whole area of who we are as persons. This is seen in the priorities we have mentioned, but it also comes in who we are within. Do we really love God, our neighbor and ourselves? Do we recognize and stimulate our own inner worth? We know that who we are speaks more loudly than what we say, yet often we fail to take care of and nurture our inner selves. In the midst of Advent, we are called to take time to review our priorities. What is more important? What really comes first? Our Christmas will be merrier and our new year happier, if we give thought to this beforehand.

RAISING LEADERS and DEVELOPING DISCIPLES

January Matthew 16:24 (NLT) Then Jesus said to his disciples, If any of you wants to be my follower, you must turn from your selfish ways, take up your cross, and follow me." February Luke 4:18-19 (NIV) The Spirit of the Lord is on me, because he has anointed me to proclaim good news to the poor. He has sent me to proclaim freedom for the prisoners and recovery of sight for the blind, to set the oppressed free, to proclaim the year of the Lords favor. March Luke 10:19 (NIV) I have given you authority to trample on snakes and scorpions and to overcome all the power of the enemy; nothing will harm you. April Romans 10:1-2 (NLT) Dear brothers and sisters, the longing of my heart and my prayer to God is for the people of Israel to be saved. I know what enthusiasm they have for God, but it is misdirected zeal. May 1 Corinthians 13:8 (NIV) Love never fails. But where there are prophecies, they will cease; where there are tongues, they will be stilled; where there is knowledge, it will pass away. June Romans 5:8 (NIV) But God demonstrates his own love for us in this: While we were still sinners, Christ died for us. July Philippians 4:13 (NLT) For I can do everything through Christ, who gives me strength. August Jeremiah 1-7 (NLT) The Lord replied, Dont say, Im too young, for you must go wherever I send you and say whatever I tell you." September Isaiah 1:3 (NLT) Even an ox knows its owner, and a donkey recognizes its masters carebut Israel doesnt know its master. My people dont recognize my care for them. October Isaiah 40:29 (KJV) He giveth power to the faint; and to them that have no might he increaseth strength. November John 17:21 (KJV) That they all may be one; as thou, Father, art in me, and I in thee, that they also may be one in us: that the world may believe that thou hast sent me. December Matthew 1:23 (KJV) Behold, a virgin shall be with child, and shall bring forth a son, and they shall call his name Emmanuel, which being interpreted is, God with us.
