2. 10 reasons to use open source in business
It is often said that open source software wins because it is cheaper.
However, the bigger factor in the success of open source software in industry has been performance.
Collaborative development projects have opened the door to much wider input than is the case in a
closed development environment with subsequent improvements in price and performance. Open
source reduces R&D costs, increases productivity, improves efficiency, facilitates interoperability
and encourages innovation.
Free Open Source Software News 3
Here's our top ten reasons to consider using open source and Linux in your business.
1. Initial outlay
2. Support
3. Quality
4. TCO
5. Security
6. No more upgrades
7. End single vendor dependence
8. Interoperability and open standards
9. Access to technology at the source
10. Freedom

3. Howto Deploy SIP Witch On Ubuntu
GNU SIP Witch is intended to make it both possible and easy for
individuals, private organizations, and even national governments to
create and deploy network scalable secure VoIP calling networks using
the public Internet and free software. GNU SIP Witch is a standard's
compliant peer to peer SIP call server that can be used to deploy ZRTP
enabled secure VoIP clients such as the Twinkle Softphone and SIP
Communicator, as well as support conventional SIP softphones. This
article explains how to quickly initially setup and deploy GNU SIP
Witch using Ubuntu GNU/Linux.

4. Linux In the Movies Thumbs Up!
Well, not the movies exactly, but on YouTube. YouTube videos are tiny and blurry, and sometimes
so herkyjerky they cause motion sickness. But where else can you
find thousands of Linux videos on every subject imaginable? Here
is a collection of short videos starring Linux: from IBM, Novell,
and random creative people doing random creative acts like taking
Tux skydiving, running 165 Linux applications at once, and making movies with Blender. Enjoy!
Imagine a place where everything is possible

9. 16 Years of Debian
It was about 16 years ago that Ian Murdock came upon the idea to design a new Linux distro. He
named it Debian after Debra and Ian.
Only Murdock himself knows about the moment of conception and
naming of the distro, but its birth is recorded in a mailing to the
comp.os.linux.development newsgroup on August 16, 1993, almost
exactly 16 years ago:
"This is a release that I have put together basically from scratch; in
other words, I didn't simply make some changes to SLS and call it a
new release."
The SLS he's referring to is Softlanding Linux System, a distro put together by Peter McDonald in
1992 that was the first to go beyond just the Linux kernel and some basic utilities. SLS introduced
the graphical X Window System, but it was buggy and led to some frustration in the Linux
community. Among those frustrated was Ian Murdock.
Debian is one of the oldest Linux distros, although Slackware predates it by just a bit. Just a month
before Murdock announced Debian, Patrick Volkerding released Slackware 1.00. Unlike Debian's
total rewrite, Slackware was a modified version of SLS.

10. The new Nokia N900 with Linux Inside
Nokia N900 runs on the new Maemo 5 Linux open source software. The N900 lets users open
multiple application windows and run simultaneously while taking advantage of its cellular features.
The N900 offers a highres WVGA touch screen, QWERTY keyboard and a Mozilla powered
browser.
With Linux software, Mozillabased browser technology and now also with cellular connectivity,
the Nokia N900 delivers a powerful mobile experience," says Anssi Vanjoki, Executive Vice
President, Markets, Nokia. "The Nokia N900 shows where we are going with Maemo and we'll
continue to work with the community to push the software forward. What we have with Maemo is
something that is fusing the power of the computer, the internet and the mobile phone, and it is
great to see that it is evolving in exciting ways."
The Nokia N900 will be available in select markets from October 2009 with an estimated retail
price of EUR 500 excluding sales taxes and subsidies. The Nokia N900 will be displayed at Nokia
World, Stuttgart, on September 2. More information on Maemo is available at
