2012 - 2013 Annual Report

Board Greetings
This past year was another very successful one for Mother Seton Academy because of the support of generous donors like you. Building upon that sound foundation, Sister Peggy Juskelis, SSND completed her first year as President and her annual message notes the many positive accomplishments during an exciting period for her and the school. As the Mother Seton Academy begins our twentieth year, we look forward to continuing our partnership with you for success in the years ahead. The Board of Directors of the school has committed members who also generously donate their time and resources. Committees work on strategic planning, finance, recruitment, fund raising and education. During the past year, the Board added four new members: Father David McGuigan, SM, Michael Brown, Louis Heidrick, and Barbara Morris. In addition, the Board acknowledged the many years of service from Dr. Jonathan Dubin, Mary Ellen Kaplan, Brother Frank ODonnell, SM and Suzanne Price who completed their terms of service. This upcoming year, the Board is very focused on supporting our school community which begins in earnest its selfstudy in preparation for AIMS (Association of Independent Maryland & DC Schools) accreditation. We ask your prayerful support so that we can build on the success of our past and continue to shape the futures of the young men and women entrusted to our care. Whenever I visit Mother Seton Academy, I am very impressed by the way the students greet visitors and go about their studies. Their confidence and courtesy are quite evident. I am proud to be part of this school community that works so effectively to fulfill its mission of challenging its students to realize their God given talents. May God bless you for the support you have given to Mother Seton Academy. Know that your partnership with us makes a real difference in the lives of our students, our families and the broader community. Sincerely,

Patrick Mutch Board Chair

Presidents Message
Last spring a generous donor made it possible for the Mother Seton Academy students to attend a performance of Hello, Dolly! at Fords Theatre. While I was enjoying the musical, I heard Dolly Levi quote her late husband, Ephraim: Money is like manure. Its not worth a thing unless its spread about, encouraging young things to grow. That line has remained in my head until now. As you read this annual report, you will see that Mother Seton Academy has been blessed by many generous friends who understand the meaning of Ephraims words. I want to thank all the donors who generously share of their blessings so that we can provide a transformative educational experience to the children entrusted to our care. As we celebrate our twentieth year of service, I want to thank all whose generous gifts have brought us to this significant moment in our history. I mention three people who have been with Mother Seton Academy since its beginning. At graduation, we honored Sister Marianne Roderick, SSND who has
Sr. Peggy and students outside the State House after testifying in favor of textbook funds for non-public schools.

served on our staff from the beginning, Sister Mary Ann Hartnett , SSND who was on the planning committee and remained involved with Mother Seton Academy, and Brother Frank ODonnell, SM who has provided valued leadership on our Boards. We are grateful for their generous service and wish them blessings in their new endeavors. We have also expanded our partnerships with Loyola University and Notre Dame of Maryland University as we expand our services to our students and provide professional growth opportunities to our dedicated staff. In this report you will read also about our partnership with NFTE and the enrichment this experience provides. We are grateful for partnership opportunities like these and with Fords Theatre that allow us to direct resources to developing our students into future leaders. During the past twenty years, Mother Seton Academy has been blessed in many ways with people who understand our mission. May God continue to bless us all as we look forward to our next twenty. Sincerely,

Sister Peggy Juskelis, SSND President

NFTE at Mother Seton Academy

The collaboration between NFTE, the Network for Teaching Entrepreneurship, and Mother Seton Academy began during the 2008-2009 school year. Through a pilot program led by Sr. Joan Warner, DC, an eighth grade teacher, a base for growth and future collaboration was established. The mission of NFTE is to inspire young people to pursue educational opportunities, start their own businesses, and succeed in life. While each school year includes many successes for students and staff associated with the NFTE program at MSA, the program during the 2012-2013 school year could be considered a banner year! One of our seventh graders, Shayne Williamson, received a first place win at the Middle School Semi-Finals of the NFTE Business Plan Competition. Shayne went on to compete in the NFTE Baltimore Regional City Wide Business Plan Competition where he was awarded a prize for 3rd place. All of us at Mother Seton Academy are very proud of Shayne and his accomplishments. Staffer Mike Horton, who coordinates Mother Seton Academys NFTE program, couldnt be more pleased as well. It is so rewarding to me to see a young man like Shayne do so well in the NFTE program. He worked hard and is very determined to succeed. Shayne knows what he wants in life and understands that it takes a lot of work and dedication to achieve ones goals. Shaynes business project involved the creation and sale of tiedyed athletic socks. When asked what he has learned by participating in the NFTE program at MSA, he stressed the importance of being professional, prioritizing ones goals, and saving for the future. Congratulations to Shayne! In 2012-2013, MSA Principal Laura Peterson Minakowski, was named NFTE Principal of the Year! Congratulations, Mrs. Minakowski on receiving this award for your outstanding achievements! Each year NFTE staff selects one principal from participating schools to receive this award. Criteria for selection include engagement, responsiveness, and overall quality of program.

Students Sample University Classes

After a week of comprehensive final exams, sixth and seventh grade students completed the school year with a Mini-University experience at Mother Seton Academy. Teachers designed their dream class, a class that both reflected the expertise of the teacher and extended topics taught during the school year. Students registered for Mini-U electives and spent the last week of school becoming experts in two subject areas. Small class sizes, a hallmark of Mother Seton Academy, were maintained; as a change of pace, classes were taught in a co-ed environment and mixed students from grades six and seven, a change to the traditionally single-sex/ singlegrade classes at the school. Several future scientists registered for Under the Sea Dissection. In this class, Sr. Marianne Roderick, SSND introduced students to numerous marine animals ranging from clams to sea cucumbers and students were able to dissect them. Tyriqe Thomas, who hopes to be a veterinarian, said learning about different species and practicing dissection will help him when he studies biology in college. Genesis Cisneros, an aspiring surgeon, agreed that the class would help her with her future career. Her favorite organism to dissect was the starfish. She said, I like to dissect. Dissecting a creature is almost like operating on a person. Ms. Musonda and Ms. Nakano co-taught a class entitled Journey to Japan, Land of the Rising Sun. In the class, students explored the language, food, art and music of Japan. Student India Smith enjoyed listening to Japanese music and making origami. Bresche Jones expressed delight about learning to write her name in Japanese. We used calligraphy pens and wrote the characters in columns instead of vertically; it looked very artistic!

Student Nelson Gomez, who was first introduced to mythology by reading The Lightning Thief in sixth grade, eagerly registered for the mythology class taught by Ms. Benzing. In the class, he deepened his knowledge of mythology, including learning about the muses and their histories. He said, The class motivated me to want to learn more. In Mr. Hortons class about the stock market, students learned a basic understanding of the stock market and competed in teams to see which teams selection of stocks would earn the most money. David Yates said the class helped him learn much more about the stock market. Additionally, David valued interacting with people I didnt know and doing math. Students and teachers alike found the week to be invaluable. Student Jesus Ramirez appreciated learning about new topics in a relaxed environment. Ellisa

Whitaker appreciated learning about topics that arent always taught in middle school. Ms. Nakano noted the teachers seemed especially passionate about their subject matter during Mini-U and she found the enthusiasm seemed contagious. She witnessed students talking in their free time about what they had learned in their Mini-University electives. She said, It was a great week; teachers and students were excited about learning. Student Shayne Williamson echoed that sentiment when he said, It was an amazing way to end the school year!
