MAYNOR MOVING: Former Winston-Salem head football coach Connell Maynor was named the new head football coach at Hampton Tuesday.

FINAL FOOTBALL STATS, ATTENDANCE AND HOMECOMING NUMBERS MATTER

BCSP Notes
HAMPTON, Va. Novelle Dickenson, Director of Athletics at Hampton University, announced Tuesday via the school's website that Winston-Salem State head coach Connell Maynor has been named the next head coach of the Pirates. Maynor, who just completed his fourth season turning the Rams of WSSU into a Central Interccollegiate Athletic Association (CIAA) and NCAA Div. II power, now makes the jump to the Mid Eastern Athletic Confernence and the Football Championship Subdivision where the Pirates reside. Maynor was also reportedly in the running for the head coach job at North Carolina Central. He is replacing longtime Hampton coach Donovan Rose who spent the last seven years as the Pirates' head coach. "I am very excited for the opportunity that Dr. Harvey, Mr. Dickenson , Dr. Smith and Hampton University has given to me, " said Maynor. In his four seasons at Winston-Salem State, Maynor led the Rams to a 45-6 overall record and a 29-2 mark in the CIAA. He led the Rams to three straight CIAA championships; three straight appearances in the NCAA Div. II playoffs; two Super Region One titles; an NCAA Semifinal appearance in 2011; and an NCAA Div. II National Championship appearance and runner-up title last season. "I am very excited about having a veteran winner at the helm of the Pirate football program," said Dickenson. "I believe that Coach Maynor is very well poised and has the acumen to take the program in the right direction. Given his past success, we have great expectations for the future of Pirate football." The Rams also captured the 2011 and 2012 HBCU National Football Championships. Maynor was also named CIAA Coach of the Year in 2011 and 2012, Boxtorow HBCU Coach of the Year, Pigskin Club of Washington, D.C. CIAA Coach of the Year, Black College Sports Page BAAD Team Coach of the Year, and Don Hansen Football Gazette Super Region One Coach of the Year. He was also named the 2011 Sheridan Broadcasting National HBCU Coach of the Year. "I am very excited to get on campus and meet the players, athletic staff and all of those who are associated with the program. I am also excited about getting out there on the recruiting trail so we can get Hampton back to its winning ways," stated Manyor. "I know that Hampton is not only known for having great athletic programs but also outstanding academics and that is something that I want to help that I ensure continues," said Maynor. Maynor is no stranger to improving programs; the year prior to his arrival, WSSU went 1-10 only to go 8-2 in his first season at the helm. His teams have seen just four losses in the past three years, with trips to the NCAA Div. II playoffs each year. Maynor brings more than two decades of football experience both as a coach and as a player, in the intercollegiate and professional ranks, and is the proud owner of 13 championships: six as a player and seven as a coach. Prior to his time at WSSU, Maynor spent 10 seasons at Fayetteville State University as a member of the Broncos' award-winning football staff, most recently serving as both the quarterbacks coach and offensive coordinator. He helped lead Fayetteville State to four CIAA title game appearances and three CIAA championships (2002, 2003, and 2009). In addition to his collegiate coaching responsibilities, Maynor served as the offensive coordinator for the Arena Football League's Philadelphia Soul from 20062008, where he helped lead the Soul to the Arena Bowl XXII World Championship in 2008. Under his leadership, the Soul ranked first in the AFL in scoring offense (62 ppg), touchdowns (132), touchdown passes (102), and red zone efficiency (85 percent) in 2008. Maynor played at WSSU and North Carolina A&T; he led the Aggies to the 1991 MEAC title and was named the MEAC Offensive Player of the Year. A veteran of both the CIAA and the MEAC, Maynor has extensive experience at both the Division I and Division II levels, and he has demonstrated an extensive recruiting acumen, which will immediately help him as he prepares to get the Pirates back to their winning ways. Virginia Union University President Dr. Claude G. Perkins named former Panthers' head coach Joe Taylor as the ninth Director of Athletics in a press conference held on Wednesday, December 11, in the L. Douglas Wilder Library on the VUU campus in Richmond, Va. Taylor is considered a legend in college football. He has won four national championships, 14 conference championships, seven bowl games in a career that spans 30 years. His career win-loss record is 233-96-4 during stints as the head man at Florida A&M, Hampton and Virginia Union. As a head football coach he has impacted the lives of thousands of young men over his forty years of coaching. He was the head football coach at Florida A&M from 2008-2012, and prior to FAMU, he was the head football coach at Hampton from 1992 to 2007. He was appointed interim athletics director Taylor at Hampton in 2005. He was also the head coach at Virginia Union from 1984 to 1991 where he won one conference title on his way to an overall record of 60-19-3 (.750). Taylor has been elected to three Halls of Fame: Western Illinois University, Virginia Union University, and The Central Intercollegiate Athletic Association. He has served on numerous committees for the American Football Coaches Association (AFCA), served on the Board of Trustees, and became their president in 2001.

Attendance Matters

The downward trend in black college football attendance continued in 2013 based on numbers compiled by the BLACK COLLEGE SPORTs PAGE. The number of games with attendance topping 20,000 was down from 22 to 15 this season. The average attendance at those games was slightly up from 29,514 to 31,174. The Magic City Classic (63,113), Bayou Classic (47,385) and Southern Heritage Classic (42,400) retained the top three positions on the list. The top 20 homecoming games were about the same averaging just over 16,000 fans per contest. Tuskegee (27,549) and Southern (27,102) topped the HC list.
