Thermochemistry Lab Write Up Intro

This lab has four parts, 1. Determine the heat capacity of a calorimeter. Well need this value to complete the subsequent parts. 2. Determine the heat fusion of ice, the energy it takes to melt one mole of ice at 0 C. 3. Determine the heat of neutralization of an exothermic acid-base reaction. 4. Determine the heat of solution for a solid dissolving in water.

Materials
Lab # 1 Calorimeter 300. g Hot Water 300. g Cold Water scale Beaker Lab # 2 Calorimeter Scale Beaker 3 Ice cubes 300. g Warm water Lab # 3 150ml NaOH Calorimeter HCl 150ml Beaker scale Lab # 4 75 ml of water Styrofoam cup Calorimeter CaCl2 NH2NO3

Variables Different temperatures in hot & cold water (Trail #1)

Procedure
See Thermochemistry Lab packet for procedures 2-3 See procedures for labs 3-4 down below Procedure Lab # 3 1. (c.) We obtained approximately 175 ml of 0.5 M HCI (this notation indicated a concentration of 0.5 moles of HCI per liter of this solution) and about 175 ml of 0.5 M NaOH. 2. (e.) Measured 50. ml of 0.5 M HCI in our calorimeter. Measured the initial temperature of HCI. 3. (a.) Measured 50.ml of 0.5 M NaOH into a beaker and measured the initial temperature of the NaOH.

4. (b.) Added the 50 ml of NaOH to the calorimeter and stirred with the temperature probe. 5. (f.) Repeated the experiment twice more with 50.Ml amounts of both acid and base. 6. (d.) Disposed of our mixed acid/ base in the bucket provided. Procedure Lab # 4 1. Add 25ml of water to a Styrofoam cup 2. Use the calorimeter to record the temperature of the water 3. dissolve Cacl2 in with the water 4. Use the calorimeter to record the temperature of Water and CaCl2 5. Repeat procedure with NH2NO3 6. Repeat this procedure two more times

Safety
All experiments were done with safety glasses on for our safety. Also when necessary non-latex gloves were worn.

Conclusion
During this lab every step was important. This was important because if something happened and our data got off then so would all of the data to come because all the equations were connected in one way. One thing I learned during this lab is that when you don't have all the high tech equipment you might need, there is always a way to find a solution. For example for our calorimeter we just used 2 Styrofoam cups with a hole stabbed in the top cup. The part that I didnt enjoy was the equations. They were the hardest part of this lab and I really didnt like them. In the end we determined the heat capacity of a calorimeter, determine

the heat fusion of ice, determine the heat of neutralization of an exothermic acidbase reaction and lastly determine the heat of solution
