Awards Evening Christ's Celebrates Success by Megan McHugh

On November 27th Christ's annual awards evening took place at St Mary Magdalenes Parish Church in the centre of Richmond. This has always been a big event for the school, bringing together parents, pupils and ex-students alike. Each year there is also a guest to give congratulations to the achieving pupils and this year the place was filled by Sir John Rowling head of Pixl group. His speech on hoping for the future inspired many a person in the audience. Throughout the night, years 8 to 11 received awards for progress and achievement in each of the school subjects and all of them received a lovely book relating to the subject. Not only academic success was highlighted, but the Bronze Duke of Edinburgh's Award certificates were given to the lucky 40-or-so year 11s who completed the award in the last academic year. Almost all of last years year 11 came to the evening to receive GCSE certificates and to celebrate moving on to the next stage in life. 2013 has been a fantastic year for Christs and the local community, celebrating the education of young people for 300 years and theyve not disappointed with their celebrations, which have brought the entire student and staff body together. Let us hope the 350th anniversary can be just as amazing as this one has been.

Christ's Commence Construction

Christs School welcomed the bulldozers onto site this week as they heralded the start of the building programme for the new sixth form centre. With a 42 week construction programme ahead the centre should be ready in time to welcome its first students in September 2014. Helen Dixon, Headteacher, photographed with staff and students from years 10 and 11 who will be amongst the first to benefit from 11-18 education at the school, is thrilled that the work had begun, commenting Staff have been working hard to prepare to introduce the post -16 programme for several months already. We will continue this drive throughout this year to ensure we deliver the same excellent standards at A-level as we do at GCSE. Matt Morris, Head of Sixth form, is also delighted to see the building programme starting to take shape, saying Parents, students and the wider community can now see tangible evidence that the vision we have been promising is going to become a reality this is a really exciting time for the school The Sixth form will house 180 students when fully enrolled in 2015 and with over 100 students already having applied for places to join year 12 when it opens next year, the school is looking forward to adding a new chapter to its history as it celebrates its 300th year as a Richmond School.

Students and staff pose for a photo for the local press with Headteacher, Helen Dixon at the controls!

Duke of Edinburgh
Forty five year 10 students have started their bronze Duke of Edinburgh award. Students have started this by undertaking a physical, skill and volunteering activity which they must keep up for 3-6 months. Students also need to complete these three sections before they will go on their assessed expedition in the summer. It is also great to see that fifteen year 11 students have started their silver Duke of Edinburgh Award. Miss Randall

Sarah Kieran appointed Deputy Headteacher

It is with great pleasure that the Governors of Christs school are happy to report that Sarah Kieran has been appointed Deputy Headteacher (having been in the role as Acting Deputy,) following a rigorous interview process with external applicants.

PTA Fireworks
Despite worrying that the fireworks would be a complete wash out, we had yet another fantastic event. The torrential rain did not manage to dampen the spirits of all who turned up, and with the help of music from the Christs band, the serving of delicious food and drink, finished off with an amazing (and dry) fireworks display, it was the usual fun, enjoyable evening, and was a huge success with an attendance of approximately 1,500 people and a profit in excess of 3,000. An event of this nature requires a huge amount of parent help. Thank you so much to all our parent volunteers, with a special thank you to Ian West who has overseen the organisation of the fireworks for the last three years. The PTA is aiming to increase fundraising in 2014 and work towards paying for more items that will directly benefit our children, over and above what the school is committed to. All parents, teachers, staff and children have recently been asked to complete a survey to give us suggestions of items and projects that we may currently fund, or raise money for in the future. This will be our main topic of discussion at the next PTA Meeting which is on Monday 13th January 2014 at 7pm in the music room. If you would still like to give your suggestions, please email janeefitch1@gmail.com and if possible, please attend the meeting. Please also get in contact if you have experience of fundraising, corporate sponsorship and/or applying for grants.

A Christmas Carol Production

A Christmas Carol was performed on Thursday 5th and Friday 6th December. The students worked incredibly hard over the last 8 weeks on their performance. They had to learn lines and choreography that was extremely challenging and they did a fantastic job on both nights. I am so proud of all of their hard work and commitment to the play. It was absolutely lovely to see all of the years interacting with each other. Well done everyone! With thanks Miss Randall and Mrs Brown

Kew Bookshop Book Fair December 3rd

We were delighted that the Kew Bookshop were able to bring such a massive display of tempting book titles to coincide with the year 8 parents evening. There was a reasonably brisk trade and of course those purchasing were able to benefit from expert advice from the Kew Bookshop staff. We will be considering similar events in the future so look out for news.

PSHEE/Careers Day November 26th

This was a massive feat of organisation from a couple of staff but resulted in an extremely rewarding day for all the pupils involved. The Year 7s were divided into teams to Design a Sports Glove. There was the chance to do an actual design as well as test out some of the science behind any design such as working out where blisters occur, which materials last longer and which extra features might be useful to an athlete. On hand to give expert advice was Daisy Radford from BAE Systems who has a technological background in material science, and she also judged the final presentations. She commended everyone on their work and the imaginative and thoughtful designs. Year 8s all visited a local place of work to find out more about the variety of employment within a single organisation. We are very grateful to The Museum of Richmond, Kew Gardens, The Orange Tree Theatre, Twickenham Police Station, Holly Lodge, Roehampton University and a number of staff at the Town Hall for throwing open their doors to us and arranging for the Year 8s to meet different staff and tour the venues. The posters produced back at school were magnificent and it was evident that a considerable amount of learning had gone on. Year 9, 10 and 11 had a variety of targeted activities. Year 9 played the Enterprise board game or a computer based Real game which focuses on career paths. For year 10, there were numerous visitors from IBM to help give top tips on writing a C.V. and how to present yourself at interviews as well as a chance to write a CV on the programme in Resource Companion which will be useful for their work experience. The ECITB Roadshow, performed to all year 10 and selected year 11 was all about careers in Engineering, and we were also delighted that Karim Al- Abbas from Enlighten Education, who came to have further sessions with our year 11 focusing on study skills and success at GCSEs.

Orange Tree Twelfth Night

The Orange Tree Theatre in Education group did two performances of Shakespeares Twelfth Night for all the year 7s. It was a really good show, done in the round with very imaginative use of props, some slick changes of character and a chance for audience participation. After the show the students had a chance to discuss aspects of the play such as what they felt about Malvolio and how he could be portrayed more sympathetically. We are very lucky to have such a professional company on our doorstep. Sarah Brown

Hampton Court
Year 8 pupils enjoyed at day out at Hampton Court Palace in November. They spent time looking around Henry's apartments and the kitchens before burning off some energy in the maze. Students also took part in one of the palace's educational sessions. Students used historical sources as clues to work out which character from Henry's court was being described. The weather stayed fine and everyone had a great time. Rachel Hoyle

Spanish Exchange to Madrid 2013

We have had the pleasure of taking 16 students to Madrid for the yearly Spanish Exchange. The skies have been blue and the Christmas spirit has been plentiful. All the children went off with their families for the weekend and visited art museums, old Roman towns & Spanish markets. They have got used to eating lunch at 3.30pm and dinner at 9.30pm with bed time being slightly later than usual! During the week we visited the Parque Retiro, The Bernabu football stadium, ate lots of churros con chocolate, visited an old town called Toldeo with gorgeous architecture and lovely winding streets. On Wednesday we did our own secret santa whilst tucking into fabulous Spanish tapas! The Christmas markets and decorations were in every street and were rather spectacular! Overallfantastic kids & a beautiful city = a very successful exchange! The adoptive parents were all sad to see our kids leave and have already requested they return next year. Have a wonderful Christmas from Miss Taber & Mrs Parmiter

Living languages at Christs school

Year 7 had a taste of how the Spanish people welcome the New Year at midnight on the 31st of December. Spaniards take twelve grapes, one grape for each of the midnight bells. Each grape represents good luck for each month of the year so they must all be eaten before the bells end. It was not an easy task to complete! But it was a lot of fun! And a Happy New Year!! Christs Students Enter the Ventura Competition

A group of year 9 and 10 students entered the Ventura completion, run by the Design Museum, this year. They took their initial ideas to the museum for a brain storming session with industry specialists. They were also encouraged to investigate the products in the shop and consider their target market. The ideas formed a base for further development and then they had to present their final ideas to a design panel of local designers and artists. A group of year 10 students were selected to represent Christs with an original design idea based on a handy man whose limbs contained screw drivers and other useful tools to use around the home. Well done to all students involved and a special mention to those who were selected by the panel of judges, Luca Barton, Ella Griffith, Ben King and Sophie Fenton. Although we didn't get selected for the final this year the students work showed great creativity and the process will stand them well in future creative and presentation projects. Mrs Busby and Mr Bird.

Introduction of Peer Mediators

We are proud to announce Christs School now has 26 Peer Mediators in Y9 who have been trained in facilitating Restorative Justice Approaches to younger year groups. Their role is to mediate friendship issues in Y7 other minor problems Y7s have and be a young person and role model to talk to when a teacher is not around or they'd prefer not to talk to an adult.

Ofsted Visit
You are all probably aware that we recently had an Ofsted Inspection on Thursday and Friday (12th and 13th December 2013.) We hope to give a report to parents/carers in mid-January 2014.

Year 10 GCSE Textiles Join in the Christmas Celebrations.

The year 10 textiles students displayed their winter products as part of the Christmas jumper celebrations on Wednesday, 18th December. The students have been making products based on themes of winter. The products range from seasonal cushions to Christmas stockings and show a range of techniques they have learnt since September. Thursday 28th November saw the students in KS3 take part in Winter House Sports day. Students represented their houses in football, rugby, netball and cross country. There was a close battle between the houses throughout the day with every point contributing towards the house total. Meanwhile during lunchtimes that week the KS4 students competed in house basketball competitions. The effort and house spirit between the pupils is to be commended, well done to all the pupils who represented their house. Christ's Rowing
Sixteen students have successfully completed their first experience of rowing on the Thames. For the past 6 weeks the students have been improving their technique in quad sculling boats as well as sharing the joys of learning a new sport. Many of the students have shown great interest in continuing and are joining Team Keane rowing club to continue training at the weekend. 16 new students will join the afterschool club on Friday 10th January.

GB Rowing Talent Identifying

GB START programme were in school on Tuesday 17th December testing any potential Olympic rower from the student body at Christ's. It was pleasing to see the students put themselves forward, and they were tested on their leg and arm power output as well as their cardiovascular endurance. Some students showed great potential to be a future Olympic rower, watch this space......

Year 7 RUGBY
The year 7 rugby team have continued their winning ways over the last couple of weeks. At the Cranford college tournament, they dominated in all performances, only suffering a narrow defeat against a year 8 side. The boys also put on a strong display at the Staines tournament, coming in as runners up on the day. Their most recent fixture, against Greycourt School, proved to be their toughest challenge yet. Playing on a full size pitch for the first time and in horrendous conditions, the boys were under pressure from the kick off. However, a strong scrum and some fantastic individual breaks put Christs into the opposition 22, allowing the ball to release the ball out wide, eventually earning them a try in the corner. Christs were able to apply the same pressure just before half time, giving the backs the opportunity to execute a carbon copy move, putting Cameron Frasier away for his second try. Christs came away with a 10-0 victory. Special mentions should go to The Captain Louis Trott, who controlled the game throughout, as well as the Christs forward pack, who fought relentlessly to gain an attacking advantage. Squad v Greycourt Flynn B-R Rory Halsall Harry Pears Paul Green Oscar J-L Owen Perkins Fahez Siddiqi Iskedi Haxhiu James Villet Louis Trott Kevin Habimana Cameron Fraser Year 7 BASKETBALL The year 7 basketball team tipped off their season with a dominant performance against St Richard Reynolds Catholic School. After taking the first quarter to find their feet, Christs took control and pulled away to finish with a comfortable score of 34-12. Their second match was against the Hampton Boys School. There were a few nerves as the boys were fully aware of Hamptons sporting reputation. However, the nerves really set in when Christ's School realised they would be facing a year 8 team, with each opposition player a good 2 inches taller than themselves. Keeping everything crossed, I was hoping that the boys would not take too much of a beating, but to their credit, Christs started the game with a fighting spirit, earning them a 6 point lead in the first quarter. As the match went on, both Christs and Hampton attacked the basket with intent, with Hampton converting more of their shots on target. In the last quarter the boys were down by 8, but this did not sway them (as I was concerned it might) and they brought it back to a 2 point game. Unfortunately, the clock ran down to zero as the boys were in attacking position. Both the Hampton coach and I were extremely impressed with how well the Christs team handled themselves against such a physically dominant opposition. Christs school will be playing Hampton boys year 7 team in the New Year. KS2 Festival
We welcomed primary schools from our cluster to the Year 4 Benchball Festival in November. The focus of the festival is for everybody to have fun and enjoy taking part in sport. All students from the schools who took part, entered in to the spirit of the competition with such enthusiasm and effort. A big thank you to our Year 9 young leaders who helped the afternoon to run so smoothly: Lily Shields-Polyzoides India Lawrence Lauren Sorrell Morgan Smith Melanie Klapakis Harriet Warne

We look forward to our Year 1 & 2 Festivals which will take place in the Spring Term. Sarah Bromly

U16 Boys Football

The boys unfortunately lost in round 5 of the national cup back in late November, it was a good run and we narrowly lost 3-2 after travelling two and half hours to the North of Essex to a very strong side. It still was a fantastic effort getting into the last 64 of the national cup and the boys should be proud of their efforts. Last week we were lucky enough to be invited to the FA 150 year celebration. It marks the time of when the FA rules were written and the first game played with these rules in Barnes back in 1863. The boys were lucky enough to meet Gary Lineker and were treated to cameras and news coverage from Sky Sports, the FA, BBC and CNN. More importantly we beat Richmond Park Academy 3-2 in their final game of the season!

A Message form our Chaplain Ruth Scott

Dear Parents and Carers, Christmas is almost upon us and at home, as yet, Ive done nothing about it. Thankfully, the same isnt true at school! The Advent wreath adorns reception, along with our Christmas tree. Yesterday we had our Christmas Jumper charity day and Christmas lunch. Our almost life-size nativity figures of Mary, Joseph and the donkey have travelled around the Departments and arrive at the Sports Hall today in time for our school Carol Service tomorrow. Different activities have happened around them wherever theyve been. In Music, for example, the students had great fun singing carols, as you can see below.

Our Year 7s and 8s continued with their challenges through the term. Due to Ofsted and illness we have postponed the Challenge shows until next term. Those Year 8s who made heart -shaped cakes or crafts did bring in their work to be photographed by a Children in Need fundraiser working on a book illustrating a different heart-shape for each day of the year, accompanying the quotes of well-known people about what touches their hearts.

Our Mufti Day earlier this month, organised through the House system raised well over a thousand pounds for charity. Its also lovely to see individual students run their own fund -raising events for charity without any prompting from staff. Sami Al-Safadi in Year 9 deserves a special mention for raising just under 70 for an orphanage we support in South America, by making and selling cakes. His effort means that the children in the orphanage will all get a Christmas lunch and some presents.

Page 14

The Christs Chronicles

Earlier this week we had our candlelit Christmas Carol Service for parents and carers in Holy Trinity Church. It was a lovely occasion. The choir, seen practising below, the orchestra and our actors and readers were brilliant. Thanks to the PTA for the very welcome mulled wine and mince pies served at the end.

Behind the choir on the left you can just see a few decorated stars. Through Advent each tutor group was asked to talk about who or what had been the guiding lights/inspiration in their lives so far, and to decorate a star representing their thoughts. You wont be surprised to hear Nelson Mandela featured on a number of stars, among numerous sports people, family, friends, Jesus, Gandhi and Christs School teachers no bribes had to be paid for the latter! It would have been lovely to see more inspirational women represented. Hopefully our girls will go on to take that role in future years. Its strange to think this is the last Christ Chronicles letter I shall write. The students and staff at Christs have taught me so much during my time here. I shall miss them all very much. With Mrs Dixon at the helm and a fantastic staff body I have no doubt Christs will go from strength to strength. Thank you, too, for your kindnesses to me. I wish you all a blessed Christmas and joyful New Year. Every blessing, Ruth
