5. Principles and applications of Fluorescent, Scanning and Transmission Electron


Microscopy.

6. Principles and applications of preparative and Analytical ultracentrifugation.

7. Principles and applications of Ion Exchange, GLC, Gel filtration, affinity and High
pressure liquid chromatography.

8. Principles and applications of High voltage, Gel and immunoelectrophoresis, Isoelectric


focusing – 2D-Electrophoresis & PFGE, Blotting techniques.

9. Principles of experimental design, collection assembly, analysis and interpretation of

3. Isolation and preservation of Microorganisms. Isolation procedures, pure culturing and


preservation, Maintenance and Identification procedure (Phenotypic and Phylogenetic)

4. Production of Microbial enzymes, extraction, purification and activity estimation.

5. Inoculum development, culture media, cultural condition optimization, strain improvement


via mutant selection, recombination and recombinant DNA Techniques.

6. Screening of microorganisms for new products and identification of products and


metabolites.

7. Biochemical activities of Microorganisms – extracellular enzymes, antimicrobial and


antioxidizing agents.

8. Fermentation techniques – batch fermentation, continuous fermentation, bioreactor design,


parts and their function, fermentation process and product recovery (down stream
processing).

PAPER III PLANT BIOCHEMISTRY

1. Plant Metabolism: Mechanism of CO2 fixation in C3 and C4 plants. N2 fixation by


symbiotic and asymbiotic method. Role of plant hormones in growth and
development of plants.

2. Plant secondary metabolites – Types, Nature, Distribution and functions.

3. Screening and isolation techniques of plant products exhibiting antioxidant and anti
microbial properties.

4. Methods for assaying antioxidant potential of enzymatic and non-enzymatic plant


products – Free radical scavenging activity, lipid peroxidase assay, DNA damage test.

5. Plant tissue culture – Propagation and production of pathogen and disease free plants.
In vitro conservation of plant genetic resources.

6. In vitro production secondary metabolites – cell cultures, Organ cultures, methods for
enhancement of secondary metabolites.

7. DNA Markers –RFLP, AFLP, RAPD, Minisatellites and Microsatellites.

PAPER III IMMUNOLOGY

3. Antigen-Antibody interactions: techniques based on interactions between soluble


antigen and antibody - Immunodiffusion, Radial Immunodiffusion, double
immunodiffusion, Immunoelectrophoresis, Rocket Immunoelectrophoresis

4. Techniques based on interactions between particulate antigen and antibody -


Hemagglutination and Complement fixation. Other techniques - Immunoflourescence,
