Hard News and Soft News

News stories actually divided into two: hard news and soft news. Hard news usually refers to important news and events about social, politic, or disaster, while soft news is refers to human-interest stories, and domestic stories about celebrity, art, and lifestyle. A Hard news usually appears in the first page of newspaper on the top of newscast, the stories deal with the politic, social and international news of war or disaster. The significant treatment for hard news is a more factual stories because hard news answering 5W1H (What, Who, Where, When, Why and How). Examples of Hard News:

However, soft news contains more images rather than hard news. It is also intended to entertain, inform, or instruct readers on things they will enjoy, as followed:1) Entertainment ,2)Human interest ,3)Movie,4)Celebrity

interview,5)Social Column ,6)Style of Dress or Shoes,etc. Soft news is actually not too simple, strict, or tight, especially in the matter of time.

A soft news story tries to entertain or advise the reader. It may give advice to how to be a good girlfriend, or what is a consideration to buy a bag or shoe. Soft news also expands very much since the woman can be a reporter and journalist in the news agency. As we can see, woman become the target of soft news .It is also stated by Burton in his book that It is said that such news is gendered in production because its stories about celebrities, motherhood, caring- are assigned to female journalist Then also informations of news more or less get additional information from the journalist or reporter. The shifting of news itself which is become as not valid as before is due to the influence of market interest, because public usually like the bad news not the good one. Moreover, the bad news will get more viewers/audiences/readers rather than the good ones.

There is a shift in the news reporting ,the shift is about the reporter emphasizing his/her experience of an event and location ,perhaps on emotional level to make the piece feel more immediate for

audience(Burton ,2005: 279) Even there are some differences of hard news and soft news, there are also similarities between them, and for example they have same ideological work. In addition, they also become a kind of political function (Burton, 2005: 278) Knowing the difference between hard and soft news has an aim to develop a sense of how news is covered, and what is the aim of that kind of news. This can be important to give a greater understanding about news.
