Everything smells of Christmas, but before you know it,

the decorations will be down as we start another year.
On Christmas Eve afternoon Ballan CFA travel around the
streets with the siren sounding as Santa waves to all the
kids and their families.
They did a practice run to the Ballan playgroup last week
and were spotted by The Moorabool News.
As the festive season starts it is time to be careful on the
roads and around water including farm dams.

But as CEO Helen Powers
explains, The Laurels are
gearing up for their return
to peak service provision
and will be at full strength
in 2014.
“We have secured a 2014
Vocation Education and
Training funding contract
through the Victorian
Training Guarantee pro-
gram, through the Depart-
ment of Education and Ear-
ly Childhood Development.
“This will mean that we’re
able to offer subsidised gov-
ernment training for eligi-
ble people.
“We are grateful for the
Registered Training Or-
ganisations and University
of Ballarat for delivering
training at our venue for
ristry, which were not able
to be provided at The Lau-
rels last year, will again be
on offer.
“We are now able to offer
the community a service
which is really great.
“We’re already seeing a
good response now that we
are able to offer subsidised
training to eligible people,
we are sure that as soon as
the community becomes
aware that people will be
eligible for funding through
us again, we can expect the
influx.
“We are looking forward
to a positive year in 2014
where we will continue to
meet the needs of the com-
munity and provide quality
training and education.”

Police are seeking public assistance following
criminal damage to a vehicle in Bacchus Marsh
last Monday.
The alleged incident occurred around 4pm while
the victim was seated in her green Ford utility
outside Bacchus Marsh Caravan Park in Main
Street.

Jackson said investigators have been told two men
and a woman approached the vehicle and used
a golf club and crowbar to cause damage to the
vehicle.
“The victim has then fled and the offenders
pursued her in a green Holden Commodore sedan
west along Main Street to the Western Highway
where they have again used a golf club and
crowbar to cause damage to her car.
“The woman then fled again, travelling east along
Main Street where the offenders again pursued
her, driving erratically before losing control and
colliding into a reflective road post opposite the
Caravan Park.”
Police are urging anyone who may have witnessed
the incident or has information to contact Bacchus
Marsh Police on 5366 4500.

Emergency Management Plan
at a Special Meeting on De-
cember 18 and the State Gov-

message within five minutes of
the vote.
Chief Executive Rob Croxford
said the State Government
would be responsible for land
ownership and ongoing main-
tenance of the $1.5 million fire
station.
“This building is like a nuclear
bunker,” he said.
“It is designed to be a place of
last resort and can hold up to
a few hundred people for a few
hours as any bushfire passes.
“We had to have a special
meeting now to approve this
because the paperwork was not
ready last week and we couldn’t
wait until the next meeting in

They won a restaurant!

A BACCHUS Marsh family
have beaten 1000s of other
Victorian hopefuls- win-
ning themselves a Mel-
bourne restaurant, in a ra-
dio competition.
Kylie and Scott Benson,
along with their five chil-
dren, collected their prize-
the Salsa’s Fresh Mex Grill
located on Bridge Road
Richmond - after they won
the Mix 101.1 Salsas New
Life Starter competition.
But winning the restau-
rant didn’t just happen
overnight.
Ms Benson said her hus-
band entered on their be-
half and managed to get
through several rounds
of short listing based on a
combination of sheer luck
and a positive attitude.
“It couldn’t have come at
a better time- Scott, who is
an aircraft engineer, was
told he was going to lose his
job in December,” Ms Ben-
son said.
“We do truly understand
how lucky we are- a lot of
people couldn’t afford to
go out and buy their own
restaurant- and Scott has
always wanted to run his
own business.
“It started off with having
to write down in 50 words

Eventually the numbers
were whittled down to 164

After that it was a whirl-
wind of competitions- in-
cluding a whole day of
activities at the Phoenix
Centre, where people were
eliminated and others re-
mained based on how well

they worked as a team.
Ms Benson already runs
her own wedding hire busi-
ness, so is already business
savvy. She also grew up in
Moorabool, attending Bac-
chus Marsh Grammar and
met Mr Benson at Crown
Casino’s “Jackpot Bar” 15
years ago-and still counts
this as her biggest win in
life, although winning the
restaurant was “a massive
win”.
The couple, who live in
Darley and plan to com-
mute to their new place of
work, have five kids ranging
from ages five -13.
“As restaurant owners we
will be able to spend more
time with our children- it
will also help us secure
their future,” she said.
“It truly is a life changing
moment- I mean, when
do they ever give away a
restaurant?
“We are very honest peo-
ple- we don’t know much
about running a franchise
but we are going to put
in 100 per cent into the
restaurant.”
The family will officially
take over the restaurant in
February, after Mr and Ms
Benson undergo four weeks
of training.

MOORABOOL COUNCIL
HAS REJECTED a planning
application for weddings,
parties and anything over-
night at an historic Long
Forest venue.

Baker House after neigh-
bours argued the woodland

trap and rowdy events were
threatening endangered

tions and a 60-signature
petition opposed to further

told council she had grave
concerns for anyone unable
to get out of the property’s
long driveway in a bushfire.
“I’ve lived through Black

Black Saturday. I’ve been
through many bushfires
and I would always help my
neighbours,” she said.
“But these owners live
50km away and I am
wondering if this neigh-
bour would help me in a
bushfire.”
Other locals said the prop-
erty was in a high risk fire
area, mobile phone cover-
age was poor, the septic
tanks on site were inad-
equate and the sound of
parties sometimes echoed
across Long Forest until 3
or 4am.
