Scenario KAS Company The case study on this paper derived from industry sources. KAS is located in Vietnam manufacturing various computer components and have nationwide distribution in Vietnam. However the situation is real with the survival and expansion of a company in the market. KAS is a family run private limited company specialised in electronic projects development systems. The business started as a small enterprise and gradually grew. Currently (20 years later) it has 200 employees mostly highly qualified with at least one-third graduates mostly design and project engineers and the rest of the staff with at least a diploma. Its core product areas includes bedside panels, safe systems and housekeeping for hotels, nurse call systems for hospitals and smart card assess systems for integrated purposes. Its market covers local and geographical area as far as Fiji. In 2004, after poor results, and high staff turnover, it has invited Khoa, the youngest son (38 Years old) to take over as boss of the company. Khoa is a graduate from a Renounce University from US. He has worked globally and has vast experiences from a spectrum of businesses from multinational to small subsidiary of large trans-national organisations. Khoa has agreed to continue the familys business, also bringing with him a team of his think-tank and his first task is to set out to improve its performance by giving KAS a better image. He decided to change the business culture at KAS. Business culture means the values and beliefs shared across the organisation. In part this means what the staffs thinks of KAS, and how well they work for it. The new culture he and his team have come up with is one that values: Good customer service Close teamwork Managers being given more responsibility All staff showing respect for each other All staff wanting to better compete and to improve the business. Khoa and his think-tank team spoke to the staff and intend to build good teams, who were keen to improve. To help with this, Khoa suggest that the management would look into the following matters to be included in improving the organisational performance: A. Budgets and Forecast

KAS current main costs are: the components used to integrate the system for the clients, batch production costs for staff and equipment, marketing and advertising, transport, storage and distribution, selling costs such as the costs of the sales team. Currently, KAS does not try to budget for the whole business all at once. It has a budget for each team as cost centre. KAS uses cost centres linked to where goods,

system design, assembly and where installations are done. Once a figure has been set, the supervisors of the respective cost centre will check to see if it is on target. The costs and income may be up or down on the forecast. The supervisors control the spending by responding to the variances. This is often because a supervisor tries to hit their own targets without regard for the targets of the business as a whole. A more cohesive budget system may be required. B Training & Development

With better training and development, it also made more ways to be promoted and used performance targets. These are targets to reach and that lead to rewards. Development helps staff to meet their own needs, such as further education. Training helps staff to meet KAS needs, such as learning more skills. KAS makes sure that it always has the best staff by providing good development and training. This is good for KAS because it gives: KAS highly skilled staff that support and promote the KAS Products Customers the benefit of knowing that they are being dealt with by expert staff Employees the benefit of helping them to be better at their job. C Operations

Clients need to know that the system they buy and installed are working well and can be relied on. They want quality products. Quality, in business terms, is the extent to which clients wants and needs are met by the system. To make sure of this, the systems have to meet certain standards. Standards are to be set to looks at quality systems how KAS make sure that system installed are always quality ones. The main task as far as quality is concern for KAS is to: Set standards and encourage their use, Test systems and issue certificates, Assess the quality management systems. D Marketing communication

KAS does not sell direct to people. It sells to other businesses (B2B). It offers a wide range of electronic hospitality systems services. There is a high level of competition in KAS market. Most system suppliers range from large to very small. New technology means that it is now much easier to set up as system providers. KAS competes on quality and by giving specialist services. KAS has a long term plan in place by which it hopes to reach its goals is to make sure that most of its work comes from those markets where it can earn higher returns. One instance is through direct mail. This has had huge growth in recent years. It also plans to have the best team of staff, the best machines and the best customer service. KAS customers need to understand spending their money wisely to get great results. They rely and trust KAS to provide new, continuous and/or better services. Notes When answering the tasks below you should consider: (www.kas.com.vn) both Internal (within the organisation) and external customers; support and justify planning proposals for your area of speciality with charts, CPA, PERT and other simulated tables when necessary.
