Objectives At the end of the lesson, the pupils will be able to: a. Identify cause and Effect b. Appreciate the importance of clean water Subject Matter Topic: Identifying Cause and Effect Reference: Across Borders through Reading 6 pp. 122-125 Materials: flashcards, copies of the story Sarimanok, picture of Water pollution in the Philippines, pictures for evaluation, strips of cartolina with sentences Procedure A. Motivation Teacher: I have here a picture. What do you see in the picture? (The teacher will show the class a picture of the effects of Water Pollution in the Philippines.) Follow-up Questions: What do you think happened in the picture? Have you seen something like this before? B. Enriching Background Knowledge Teacher: Class, what are the bodies of water near our community? Are they clean? If not, what pollute them? I have here an article entitled Water Pollution. It is an article that talks about the reasons for Water pollution and also the effects it has on our community. C. Raising of Motive Question What do you want to know about the article? Motive Question: What are the reasons for Water pollution and its effects on our community? D. Unlocking of Difficulties Teacher: Class, before we read the article let us first learn some new words. (The teacher will then present the words to the class one by one) 1. Landfill: They dump all the garbage in the nearest landfill. 2. Toxic: Keep the bottle of Zonrox out of the reach of children, it is toxic and is very harmful. 3. Brackish: The river was a bit brackish, it tasted salty for fresh river water. E. Setting up standards for Reading Teacher: What will you do when you are reading a story or an article? 1. Sit properly.

Answering of motive question Teacher: Now that you have read the article we can answer our question before, What are the reasons for Water pollution and its effects on our community? H. Follow-up Questions Why do you think should we take care of our water? As a grade six pupil, what can you do to help decrease water pollution? What do you think will happen if we dont have clean water to drink left? IV. Enrichment Teacher: Now, we are going to read a short story entitled Sarimanok (Teacher will pass out the story and the pupils will read it.) Teacher: In the story you read, you will note that there were several why-questions asked by the characters. Something happened in the museum so the people are looking for a cause. What happened is the effect and why it happened gives the cause. Did you like the story? Why didnt Bobby join the spectators at the scene? What was the crime all about? Why was the victim stabbed? Can you give other examples where there is a cause and effect in the story? Evaluation Teacher: I have here pictures, I will show them one by one and I want you to tell the causes of the situations in the picture. (The teacher will show 3 pictures of effects and the students will guess what the causes are.)
